That’s great advice. I have found that to be true too. I’had one guy bring me a small hub and pulley to weld and it took me more time to get my welder out than it did to weld it. When I was done he ask me how much and I just told him to come back the next time something breaks and he’s been back 4 times with something different each time and never questions the price when I tell him.

I just welded a broken ladder rack support for a local roofer. Small 2 1/2” stuff. Thin wall as hell and rusted from the inside. Used 3/32 6011 at 54A. Not fun at all but the family whose roof is being repaired tomorrow will be happy. That’s the pay off. Down the line somewhere that weld joint matters beyond pay and beyond aesthetics of the trade. BTW, I did the weld on a pawn shop inverter that cost me $80 about ten years ago. That’s a win!

Hold firm on your price point based on your experience, and skill. Leave your clients satisfied, and go beyond the call of duty. Word travels fast in this industry, especially, when you get connected and build a network within the community. Various fb groups, forums, etc. Showcase your work.
Don't get in a bidding war to win jobs. You'll lose.
Skilled welders ain't cheap. Cheap welders are not skilled. People get what they pay for honestly, they are paying you for your experience, not your time.
If a customer tries to nickel, and dime you for a project, or a job. It's in your best interest to walk away. Do some research on what welders are charging based on their experience, and particular projects you are interested in doing for work in your demographic. That's your best bet.

Another method of repair would be to weld that up slick it off and split another piece of tubing with that ID, then either 45 each end in the same or opposite directions, clamp the repair tube on and weld all that up over the repair. When welding on tubing of that size and where it is I found that a perpendicular weld will almost always crack beside the weld and then fail. In aircraft fuselage repair, it is a big no no to weld perpendicular to the tube. It is always cut on an angle and then welded, rosette welds work wonders too in that application.

Old Pipeliner up here in Muskoka, Ont. Canada and I gotta say I enjoy the way you role young fellow good job as usual Austin. I worked around welding on big inch jobs from British Columbia across this great land to Cape Breton on the east coast and had the luck to work with a lot of the best, be they welders, operators, teamsters, labour's, heck I'll even throw in a few engineers, safety hands, environment consultants, surveyors, field office support, Inspectors, land agents etc.
The game changed a lot from when I was a bronc to what we have today and I guess mostly for the better. I know we put a safer better engineered product to bed now than in the past I think mainly due to safety, welding, Inspection, coating, environment policy and procedures. I know todays Coating systems add many years of life to the pipeline but it takes everyone out there to do there part, when I first started back in 1969 all or most of the big nuts where U Alls as us canadian boys called you americans. That changed in the early 1970 tees, I will never forget some of those characters that I had the privilege or misfortune to work with or around in my life on the line most of them long gone now.
Anyway I get kinda long winded now and again so I'll end with this - Hang on to some of those dollars! Life is full of peaks and valleys and the years have a way of flying by! I though I'd be young forever and there would always be work and the kids would understand why I missed so much, full of good intentions that has lead me hopefully not to the gates of Hell but to being suddenly old and out of work , broke and seemingly unwanted, I and the wife where poor money managers and we are reaping the benefits now.
Anyway I bought a little lincoln mig welder about2012 and it sat in my little wood shop for about a year never plugged in, one day one of the finest welders (Murray Earl) a friend I met on the work stopped by to shoot the breeze and asked how I was enjoying the lincoln to which I had to respond that I had not fired it up as I was alittle scared of the damn thing, well he laughed and said he'd never thought of me a chicken sh-t and to fill my boots and he left. I cleaned up a couple of pieces of 3/16 mild steel and hitter, well i welded and ground my way right into new world, I liked It! about a year ago I switched form Flux core to shielding gas and it helped me big time! So I now make and sell the odd piece of Garden, Cottage/Boathouse art to help supplement my measly Canadian government pension, it helps alittle still in the hole and its getting deeper but gives me hope or at the least keeps a Guy from goin crazy, I weld big birds, whales, fish, flowers, Ducks and snails with native rock, oh sold a couple of i don't know what to call them but I incase glass wine bottles in steel and hang them in a 36" ring and raise them up so the morning sun can whisper through the glass, some think I am odd some call me an artist, thank God didn't make us all the same is all I know!
    Mike (starving artist)
Ps. real reason iI started this conversation was to suggest that you might have dropped a little air out of trailer tires and backed it in shop to use your Mig. Just a thought.

A corner gusset would help to change the lines of stress . In leu of that just weld a couple of vertical beads starting about 2 inches above and ending 2 inches below your horizontal welds . It has worked for me welding bolts to plate

Hey Austin, do you charge by the job as a whole or by the hour? I often get someone asking for a total bid before I start the job and to be honest it's kind of hard to know how much to charge before I dig into it. I just hate to sell myself short. Any advice would be much appreciated!

truck n tools +hourly rate so for example i charge 50$ for my truck and shit , not including materials like steel i gotta buy or shit like that then 20$ an hour for that type of work hes doing. if they cant/dont wanna pay it, it aint worth it. them customers that try and nickle and dime you are the worst kinda people to deal with cause theyll want more shit for free or they bitch and moan about the price. they can go fuck dirt if they dont like what i charge. most of the time it works out great cause the customers know you aint foolin around & take your work seriously.

🤔 why not take the gate off the trailer and perform the repairs in the shop?
On pipe breaks like those. I would cut the broken ends off, insert cold roll round stock. Then weld both cut ends to that.

Austin, I think your on the fence about rather u should have joined the 798 . Rather u are working or not u still have to pay the union dues right? I know things are slow right now on the pipeline in certain areas but your brother quitting the 798 might follow you around if u know what I mean . They have clicks in the union circle too.

You should be on the lookout for the double die on those 1969 dimes, they may not be silver but worth more with the small defects, especially if it has a "S" mint mark, your talking some serious bills right there
