    I started on the iron 883 as well, and although I consider it a smaller, lighter, bike now (compared to my ‘21 FXLRS) as a beginner, it was a handful for sure! It’s actually the lightest bike I’ve ever ridden lol. Excluding the dirt bike I had when I was 14.

    I have those same mirrors on my Tiger. :) They are great up until about 80 mph where they just fold back. I had a Honda Rebel 500 and I agree those bikes are great beginner bikes.

    I have Shinko 705 tires on my KLR650. Great on road and good off. About a 75/25 tire.

    I say this with the utmost respect... But suggesting, in the USA, any bike that cannot handle the freeway, is a very dumb suggestion for anyone.
    The freeways in the USA are so essential and so important that telling anyone to get a bike without the ability to run the freeway safely is a bad choice. It takes a huge amount of skill beyond a beginner's level to understand how to handle a bike safely on the road that cannot exceed the freeway speed limit. It's important for any rider in the USA to learn the freeway and quickly because of how essential the freeway is. So any beginner bike in the USA NEEDS to be a suggestion that can handle the freeway. Iron 883 may be heavy, but at least it can run the freeway and is a forgiving bike for a new rider.
    If the rider essentially will never touch the freeway then sure, a small bike is a fine suggestion.
    I used to agree with the idea that you have to have a small light little bike to learn on... but after the years I've spent riding, I've realized that this attitude is very oriented coming from cars, not from a riding perspective. Since I've ridden essentially purely motorcycles, my perspective on A LOT of things has changed towards bikes, including Beginner bike suggestions.
    Now should someone get a 2018 Fat Boy 114 as their first bike? or a GSXR 1000RR? no way, and especially no way. But... a 300/350/250/KLR650 or something thats running out of steam at 65... not a good idea to put in the hands of a new rider who will have to take a freeway here and there, it will put them in very bad situations that they dont have the skillset to avoid or escape just yet.

      I didn’t ride on the interstate/freeway on my 883 until my Route 66 adventure and that’s because I was forced to because there was no other route to take. That’s a full 18 months after I learned to ride.
      A beginner bike does not need to be freeway capable unless that’s what a beginner rider needs to do. Very few do, though.
      With all that said, the 300L is 100% capable of handling freeway speeds.
      The 300L can travel 75 mph. I’m on the freeway regularly. Sure, I’m not traveling on the interstate or freeway for longer than 15-20 minutes, but neither are most beginning riders. It’s not wise to tell someone they need to ride a larger displacement bike because they may need to ride on the freeway here and there.

      @@GreatEgret I'd have to disagree on the very few. Perhaps regional difference but I had to take my bike out on the freeway within a few days of owning it. They're effectively essential here to get through anywhere. SEATAC PDX area basically a non freeway capable bike is putting a rider in dangerous situations they dont have the skillset to get out of. You really cant avoid the freeways here. There's even a few passes here where if you dont take the freeway you end up going 400miles around to avoid it, and that road is still driven normally at 65+.
      Down in dupont there's a section of road that the only way through it is the freeway. There is no road around it because on oneside is a gated community that has blocked off the road completely with a locked gate, and a military base is on the other side. So you have to go through that i5 section. And it SUCKS. I've tried to figure out how to go around it several times, and it takes 120+ miles to do so. Which is unreasonable.
      Essentially around here in this huge metro area there are people who have to take the freeway or go dozens to hundreds of miles around.

      @FranBunnyFFXII This is a video on how the 300L is a great beginner bike. You are commenting that the 300L is not a great beginner bike because it’s not capable of freeway travel. The 300L is capable of freeway travel. I know that it is because I ride it nearly every day on the freeway. Don’t know what else to say beyond that 🤷🏽‍♂️

      Have you ridden these bikes? If not, then it’s just Google Fu to suggest that any of them are bad beginner bikes.
