    It was with the anti-Klan campaign that the radio series changed Superman's hallmark from fighting for "truth and justice" to "truth, justice, and the American way", as the campaign emphasized in the programs that hate-filled Klan rhetoric was "un-American". The new phrase was carried over when Robert Maxwell adapted Superman to television in the early 50s, but ironically it grew to be perceived in a radically different light and interpretation as the Red Scare exploded in prominence around that time. It ultimately came to be embraced as a nationalist, anti-communist slogan, far removed from its roots as a message of universal brotherhood.

      To be fair, no one considered communism or its' tactics to be anything BUT un-American at the time, so it still fit. State-run media, a one-party system, no freedom of religion, no freedom of speech, anyone could be arrested at any time for trumped up charges without a warrant.

That and communists didn’t attack the U.S., but fascists and racists like Confederates (which later inspired the KKK) did attack the US unwarranted in violent ways from the attack on Fort Sumter to the attack on Pearl Harbor, those forms of right wing ideology are un-American.

Then rebirth writers give an amazing story with CLIFFHANGERS when the issues came. In a sense the start of the New 52 Superman was almost symbolically the DEATH Of Superman. I'd never heard of the kkk before seeing that as a child in grade 2 or 3. It left the immediate and lasting impression on me of them being counterparts in some way to Nazis.

You seem to always take editing serious, but it seems to just be getting better and better. This could stand on its own just as pure audio, thanks to your presentation style. NerdSync forgot to bring it up, so I will: "Superman Smashes the Klan" was a three-part, bi-monthly limited series put out by DC Comics from October 2019 to February 2020 which brings the classic radio serial's story up to date for a modern audience. IMHO a very interesting aspect of the reboot is the addition of an out-of-the-closet element to the story: Superman is deeply afraid of his own burgeoning power, to the extent that he keeps holding it back, until a near-disaster makes him realize that without accepting himself for who and what he is, he can't serve the people of Earth the way he ought to. So he does. And now you know why the Golden Age Superman couldn't fly, but the Silver Age Superman can.

    @benjaminkellog7311 Před 7 lety +4

    Wow, that's a powerful story, and I'll have to give the full version a listen soon! Not to undersell the important roles federal prosecutors and all those other wonderful people you mentioned at the end played in bringing down bigotry, but they probably wouldn't have been nearly as effective at such a big job if the people hadn't supported them, and they likely wouldn't have felt compelled to do so if the Superman show hadn't so passionately illustrated the very problems groups like the KKK generated. Heck, if anything, this story proves what the show was trying to say all along: we could all do better together than if we let hate drift us apart.
    I love your long-form content; I've seen and heard most of it before, but you provide so much great context and your style makes them exciting again! Say, the 100th anniversary of the longest-running syndicated cartoon, "Ripley's Believe it or Not!" is coming up next year. Wow! Been reading comics since 1968 and I never heard any of this. So thanks for this episode, very informative. Just a couple of points. While readers knew Superman was from another planet, Clark Kent himself never knew this until his 10th anniversary story in 1948 because in his original origin, his rocketship burned up just moments after a passing motorist [not the Kents] pulled him from the burning machine. Said unnamed motorist then dropped the baby off at the local county or state orphanage where later, the Kents, adopted him. Another interesting point was that President Woodrow Wilson was a massive hater of blacks and helped by using his power and prestige to aid the KKK in its rise in the teens and twenties. Keep up the good work.

    It's because of writing and research like that I enjoy watching this channel. It's one of the main reasons I decided to actually sub instead of just lurk the channel.
    Your ending/outro...
    It's funny, because as a kid, I was never taught that comics were some sort of inferior art form. Just different.
    Sure I was encouraged to read "books with out pictures" like any other kid, but it was felt that reading was reading and pictures or no, comics still counted. My favorite uncle had a huge collection of all Kinds of comics laying around. So I got exposed to everything from silly stuff like Disney all the way over to stuff like Tales from the Crypt. And hosts of things in between.
    And between him and my grandmother, I have a love of reading and learning that even as I get older, never dims. To this day, I remain just as thirsty for new and edifying information as I ever had all through life. And I hope that never changes.
    That's also my wish to all other people as well... Stay hungry for new knowledge. Watch channels like this one and keep growing.
