  • An introductory video covering the MFJ-993 Intellituner. This small automatic tuner covers 1.8MHz to 30MHz at up to 300 watts. Capable of tuning up to a 32:1 mismatch at full power, or up to 64:1 at 150 watts. The tuner has two switchable antenna jacks, and a 4:1 current BALUN.

    Three antenna tuners to transmit (Rig,MFJ,Heathkit) must drive you crazy!

    Where is the MFJ in your chain? You use 2 tuners?

    thanks for this video. i know its been a long time ago, but i have a question.. i haave a similar unit, and recently got an rf amp, so this tuner cannot handle the power output... the question is can i have two tuners, this one and a HFT-1500 connected together plus that amp into a MFJ 1700C Switch? and how could i do this with the ICOM 7300

    I find I need to power on the 993 after I power on the 7300 or the tuner doesn't work. Is there some setting I have missed? Thanks for the video.

    I have a MFJ-993 too. After you tune up with low power, if you talk with SSB with 100 watts, do you find the frequency display on the 993 go erratic and also change the SWR while your speaking. With CW it works fine. SSB drives the tuner crazy. Do you have the same results?

    • @falsedragon33
      @falsedragon33 Před 5 lety

      That should be as expected if I am thinking right. Well, depending on the input. The tuner is looking for a carrier, so it can reference the signal, and apply different LC combinations. The reflections aren't necessarily linear, and the amplitude isn't constant. Although I have never tried, I would assume that AM would tune just fine, as it has the center carrier.

    Hi good afternoon, I have the same tuner but I does not tune with the preamp on and if I tune a frequency with the att on, when I transmit with the pream the tuner think that iam tuning again,what can I do?

    Hello, Nice Video. Can you tell me the Pinouts for the tuner to the ICOM cable?

  • @AdamosDad

    I realize this was 3 years ago, but this tuner is at a nice price right now. Do you know if it will tune without input from a radio (sensing RF), I have a Xiegu G90(20w) and an old Ameritron als 500m and am trying to get things running, even to the point of using a foot switch to key the old amp. kd9oam.

    how or can this tuner be used as an swr meter without tuning the antenna. basically what im asking is can it be used as a true swr meter alone?

  • @n1kkri
    @n1kkri Před 3 lety

    The manual sounds like you can set a swr target of 1.0. I can only find how to set it for 1.5 or 2.0. Do you know how to set it for 1.0?

    Can the MFJ turner ground be connected to the Icom 7300 ground?
    I mean to put a direct cable from the transmitter to the coupler?

    ok so i guess after i hooked up that wire that came unsoleried from my molex connector i got my tuner to work go ahold of someone in san jose and im in the central valley so that seems to work ok for me for just a wire antenna.

    Has anyone noticed any difference (993B) not 993, how well it will match at 150w vs. 300w. I am finding I at least on 80m with balance line going to the center of about 125 feet on each side, I have not seen any improvements.

    How does one disable the internal tuner to use the external one ??

    • @BootstrapWorkbench
      @BootstrapWorkbench  Před 7 lety +5

      Emil, any tuner that uses the tuner interface connection on the back of the IC-7300 will disable the internal tuner. The radio detects that an outboard tuner is connected and disables the internal tuner.

    Hi I noticed the problem you had a 7.210MHz. I have the same problem but no other means to sort it like you did. I am running a GWHIP 421 Triband resonant end fed antenna which is resonant on 40, 20 and 10M. So any idea why the tuner fails on 40M?

    • @BootstrapWorkbench

      Sometime you get a voltage or current peak that the tuner cannot handle. How are you terminating your endfed?

    Thanks for the video. When I press the Tune button on the tuner, it beeps at me and displays the message "Huh? Increase Power". If I press the Tune button a second time, it tunes properly. Auto button is out on the tuner, power output of the radio iss 100w SSB. Any idea what's causing the initial error message? Also, it I press the Tune button on the radio, it uses the internal tuner and not the MFJ tuner.

      Do you have the interface cable between the IC-7300 and MFJ-993 or are you using it in RF sensing mode?

    • @gordonclaridge1626
      @gordonclaridge1626 Před 7 lety

      I'm using the Icom interface cable.

    • @BootstrapWorkbench
      @BootstrapWorkbench  Před 7 lety

      To me, it sounds like there might be two issues. One is that there may be an issue with the RF sensing circuit in your MFJ-993. The other is that there may be an issue with your interface cable. With a functional cable, the internal tuner should bypass. Have you performed a full reset on your 993?

    • @gordonclaridge1626
      @gordonclaridge1626 Před 7 lety

    Hi there do you know with an IC 7000 and a TS 480 if you need an interpase box or just a lead from radio to tuner....Fred in Uk g4vvq

    • @BootstrapWorkbench
      @BootstrapWorkbench  Před 6 lety

      Your Icom can connect to the 993 with the MFJ-5124I cable, which is the same cable that I use, and the Kenwood may be able to use the MFJ-5124K cable. I don't have a modern Kenwood, so I can't speak to that. You might contact MFJ and ask... I have found their support to be very helpful. You may also be able to use the tuner in semi-automatic mode, but I recommend the cabled fully automatic mode.

      The 480 would just need the cable mentioned in the other comment and moving the jumper on the inside to the "K" position.
