  • Generative artificial intelligence is all over the online shopping space - but has that actually made the experience better? The Verge reporter Mia Sato did a try-on and review of clothes by the AI fashion brand Finesse. And afterwards, she tested AI-powered e-commerce tools that generate images and product descriptions.

      Be honest, do you even care if clothes were made using child labor? If not, then I guess using AI that steals from real artists is the least of your concerns!

      I could not care less if it's AI or human designed. I do care if the clothes I buy are destroying the environment, shipped from across the world, and are made in sweatshops in SEA... Cool video though, Mia!

    The line "companies in all different industries are jumping to find a use for AI" in the intro perfectly summarizes the problem with the current AI hype. AI tools are not created with a specific purpose in mind. They are created because we can, because it's the hot new tech that has investors frotting at the mouth. Nobody seems to be asking what the benefit is, why we should be doing any of this. These companies are just charging ahead blindfolded hoping that they'll run into a pile of gold rather than a spike pit.

      Why should I let an AI predict my size if measurement tables already exist? Why should an AI come up with a more detailed description when the seller has physical access to their merch to base their description on? Why deal with the perils of AI shortcomings when vastly more accurate options already exist?

    That Ebay feature is truly insane. Did no one think, like, at all? Generating a text like that is helpful to exactly no one. That's too long without actually saying anything. If I was scrolling through items a description like that would not be read.

    • @TheOfficialOriginalChad
      @TheOfficialOriginalChad Před 2 měsíci

      eBay has never treated the description like something the buyer needs to read. On Mobile they don’t even show the description on the item page, only a button to open an overlay with the description.
      And when was the last time you trusted the description on a non-eBay product? Have you ever read “#1 product” on the box and thought “oh wow, #1, I can’t miss this opportunity”?
      I think AI taking over these kinds of things is a good thing. It exposes it for what it really is: just fluff.

      @@TheOfficialOriginalChadBut a good description I do trust. Something that just tells me what the item is. In the case of an item of clothing things like brand, store, size and fit are good. Something about the quality of the item.
      AI should only be involved in formatting that info and fix grammatical errors. That's what second hand selling sites need. More words helps exactly no one. And I am genuinely amazed that Ebay doesn't understand that.

    Initially appalled by the garments that got shipped. You would definitely not wear them out as is BUT! I thought, they could serve as a prototype or mockup base that can be modified and tweaked to you size or design. If you were taught how to sew in school or would like to learn more, the process of "correcting" these can serve as a practice of sorts. Much like modifying take out food to suit your taste, or editing text produced by AI to suit your exposition style.

Some of these AI tools really do make a mockery of what it means to be human!

    The irony of this video is that while the clothing manufacturer screwed up the clothing, The Verge screwed up the audio in this video.
    Right click on this video and select "Stats for Nerds". From there you will see that CZcams measures the audio in this video as 9.8 dB too quiet. If you're not familiar with this number, 5 dB too quiet is noticeable and 10 dB too quiet is unacceptable. That number is supposed to be at or very near 0.0 dB.
    Hey The Verge, whoever is in charge of exporting your videos for CZcams needs to Google "how to make sure audio is loud enough for youtube" because they clearly don't understand what they're doing. This video is way to quiet. This might be an acceptable mistake for a channel with 3.4k subscribers, but it's wholly unacceptable for a channel with 3.4M subscribers. Y'all really need to fix this problem.
