Those oranges in the display has been bought. If they had not been bought, they would not have been given for free to some starving people. Because giving away free food is the opposite of what they're trying to do: to earn money.
It has never been easier to produce food. The productivity is higher than it has ever been before. Probably 100 times higher than it was a couple of centuries ago. So producing food is not an issue. The problem is that we do it to make money. We don't do it just to eat the food. During the first 99% of mankind's history, food was produced to be eaten, not to be sold. So when food was there, people were not starving. People were starving only when not enough food could be produced. Today, when food is there, when you are surrounded by food, you can still be starving if you don't have enough money to buy it.
And food is always there. Always. A natural disaster destroyed all crops where I live? Who cares? In the shops around me, I can find tomatoes from Spain, avocados from Peru, pineapples from Kenya, fish from Norway, beef from the Netherlands, etc. I don't care if the crops around me has been destroyed. I won't even notice it.
Enough food is produced for everybody. And we could easily produce much more, and would, if we could sell it. But if we produced food in order to eat it, rather than sell it, then everybody could eat well enough as long as we can produce what is needed. And of course, with the efficiency of today's methods, we could produce what is needed.
Thinking that we should not waste food because of starving people only reinforces the problem. If you want to solve a problem, then find its cause. Its real cause, not an imagined caused that was valid centuries ago but is not anymore.
