How To Build Chili Tolerance in Thailand (Secrets of Eating Thai-Level Spice From... Finland??)

  • One of the most common questions I see in comments is, “How do I build chili tolerance before I travel to Thailand?”
    Well, there are a few answers, and in this video you'll get a big answer all the way from Finland! So awesome to make this video with Joonapekka, and I hope you love hanging out with us (I also hope you benefit from our (tasty) answers, and from a little healthy competition).
    First of all -
    My friend J H has some new videos on his CZcams channel! Show him some love, his channel link is right here... / @abiteofsomtam
    Next -
    I am happy you’re joining us all today, and if you are interested to learn more about Thai language, Thai travel tips, Thai food, or Thai local life, these are all things I have entire playlists for already. I have lived in Thailand now for going on 12 years, and I am still not bored in the slightest - I love this country, it is my home, and I hope to share my endless passion for learning and experiencing all that Thailand has to offer!
    Finally -
    Its only a few more weeks until I start a big adventure in Southern Thailand, visiting many places that I've never been before - stay tuned, send me some cool comments and motivating words, and I promise to share a ton of videos and livestreams all along the way.
    Much love today everyone, blessings from us, hope you are having a great one today!
    -Joel

And that was a blast honestly man, it was so cool to hang out, and we SHALL surely make (at least) one more video of Thai, AND you gotta take me for some kinda European food adventure (again, fingers crossed for Finnish food! but we can find something reasonable someday soon I hope)... about the editing though, I am struggling to call myself a professional at anything at all, but ok, for your own future, notice how the lighting is here at TamKraToei (you are in DANGER of not being able to see the high chili content :) :) ). haha. but seriously, lighting is not very good for filming here, and that really is the only thing... when you are on the lookout, look for a place with good lighting OR just know that you might have to go for "dinner" somewhere at 330pm, and your video future will be off and running :).

    It’s the Joonaprkka and Jo’el show!!
    Good thing the other table was right there to hold the rest of the food. The shrimp could almost be ceviched if it was sitting in lime juice/vinegar, and chillies of course. I learned about wing beans from you and Mark and tried them for the first time not long ago ... loved them!🤤 Not exactly what I’d call a ringing endorsement of the candy from Li 🤣🤣 and still not clear how the flavour stack up ... Joonaprkka will have to send a bag of them to all the BruCru now! 🥰🥰🥰

      Honestly the best part of all though is just to be able to go here together, I had thought from several months back, for all of our kinda core members of the livestream team, I had always thought that he would be the first person I would actually meet in real life. SO awesome :)

    Sitting here in NY watching this video over breakfast, and salivating at all those dishes you all ordered. Yuuum! As for the licorice candy that your friend brought, it’s ‘salted licorice’ that’s why it has that savory, sort of pungent taste. When I was a kid growing up in Montreal, I had a friend whose parents were Dutch.. and she got me to try it and I liked it. Most people I know who’ve tried it either really like it, or hate it. Lol. Some specialty candy stores will stock it or some European grocery stores. They come in varying degrees of ‘salt’.. mild, double salt, etc.

    • @missbiggs9437
      @missbiggs9437 Před 3 lety +1

      Hey NYC, thanks for this explanation ... it makes a little more sense to me now. I've had Dutch salted licorice loads of times and live it ... I'm not a big candy eater but licorice is one of the few I love and salted licorice is right up there. It's easy to come by in Toronto where I am and you're correct, you can get it from just about any European delicatessen. I wasn't sure whether the candy Joonapekka shared and the Dutch salted licorice were the same but it sounds like they are. Thanks!!

    Soooo funny the look on Joels face and then he says it is interesting flavor. haha and Joonapekka giggles. Then even funnier when she tries it and says smells like burnt plastic or burnt rubber. That was soo funny. I remember getting black licorice candy as a child and thinking eww "why?" I will buy black licorice candy if the ingredients shows "licorice root" in the ingredients just for the medicinal purposes but it is not a favorite. I would love the sweet peanut sauce probably as well, as I love the Thai Peanut Butter salad dressing. Great video! Joel and Li, Your Vlogs have got very interesting. I liked the 3,000 hole ‘Rock Reef Park’ episode. We have visited Thailand in the 90’s, now I want to visit again. Looked like you and Joonapekka enjoy each other’s company. ‘Tam Kra-Toei ‘ is a cool very unique Restaurant. I am surprised how you, Li, JP and Mark keep a trim figure. I would gain 300 lb if I ate all that food. I liked the salted baked Tilapia, it looked so delicious 😋. “So good that you forget your Husband”!, will not stand up in a court of law 😜. The Koreans too eat a combination of dishes mostly BBQ wrapped in lettuce leaves. If JP extends an invitation, you should try the Cuisine in Finland. You and Li have mastered the art of Vloging, you don’t have to fly under Marks wings anymore. More Power to you brother. The Germans love Liquorish candy too. It’s taken to settle the stomach after a big meal. There is a liquor made out of it called ‘Jagermeifter / Underberg’. Blessings. Mano. 🙏🌹 (Baltimore MD)

    I have a hard time getting restaurants to make it Pet Pet. I think they are afraid you will not eat it if it is too hot! But, I grew up eating Hatch green chillies grilled and made into a salsa. I love it when I can feel my face turn a lovely shade of red in my cheeks. Thanks for teaching us Thai while you eat. That REALLY makes me happy.

    Is your friend from Holland? If so he is very adventurous. My wife is Dutch and I lived there for 4 years while in school and though the Dutch like a little bit of heat, because of the Indonesian influence, they aren’t typically too fond of spicy food. In our household I always had to make two versions of Indonesian food. One authentic and some times spicy and a second one much less spicy and adding spice later. Problem with that is it just isn’t the same as cooking with chili’s. Another great video Joel! Keep them coming. I haven’t missed one yet! Thank you. God bless and stay safe.

    Hi Joel, yes I did watch all the video. It looks like a great place to eat. I must admit I have only seen the green papaya salad in Bali, it is called rujak and it is a much less elaborate preparation than what I see you have in Thailand. I really love how they give you a plate full of fresh greens and herbs. That is not the case in Bali. They have a very limited diet there consisting of many white rice and meat. Not much in the way of veggies. Not to say they don’t eat veggies but it is not much. Unfortunately I see a lot of obese, arthritic, and diabetic, plus high blood pressure, people due to this diet. They consume a lot of instant noodles, and junk food laced with msg and lots of chemicals and preservatives. It seems strange for a place as lovely as Bali to have gotten so far removed from a more natural way of life. It is just a part of their evolution to go through the tourism which led to greed and selfishness, wanting more and more, and sharing less. It is a shame that money has become such a strong focus. I understand it is a tool to buy everything we need, but it seems to make people lose their humanity and compassion. Thanks for responding,. Peace, Dennis

      Ah Dennis!!! I am glad to see your comment and man, I always appreciate how you so obviously have a heart for the education of healthy lifestyle/healthy eating practice. Man, really I am very happy you wrote back (and wrote back a lot!!)
      This has been a lifelong goal for me to learn HOW to speak (and that process is never done!!), how to advise, how to understand, and then how to HELP on a person to person basis... and never let it be the feeling of fighting a losing battle. I have found it not worth my time our time to spend too long thinking about the bigger picture in this, because its both TOO big, and its just not right to do that (we have to trust God in the end, so why not along the way?). So, I do indeed appreciate having people like you here, and I always appreciate your questions and comments... even when I don't know exactly how to answer.
      I would absolutely LOVE to visit Indonesia next year, and Bali seems like a very special place. I would love for you to take me to coffee somewhere (somewhere near there!), man thanks again for writing me so many times over this past year.
      Ok! The livestream on Sunday will go ahead as usual, haha, hope to see you there as usual as well! Cheers man, Happy Friday!!!

      Reading this a 2nd time, Im reminded of Phuket. I had the chance to learn HOW amazing Phuket's own food culture is, but it seems like there are 8 million stalls serving the most expensive and terrible examples of "Thai Food" possible. It just doesnt make much sense! Unless you think about money. If you think only about money then... yes, it does make sense :-/

    • @dennisolive4741
      @dennisolive4741 Před 3 lety

      Hi Joel, thank you for sending such a heartfelt response. I never made it to Phuket, but a long time ago I went to Krabi, then on to Ao Phra Nang. It was a lovely place, very peaceful and easy going. There was a place to rent a room that was an apartment like complex that went straight up a mango tree. It was hilarious, if anyone walked or made love the whole place rocked. They had a trail under the cliffs that went to the sunset beach where you could see Ko Phi Phi. There were cliffs with bamboo ladders that went up 50 meters where the Thai would take the swallow nest to sell. It was a magic time. I heard later hotels were built and who knows what. Sort of like Koh Phangan was before. At least this virus situation has been a sad time for some and a good teacher for others if they are ready. Let’s hope when things open again, it will be with a higher consciousness and more love for the Mother Earth and each other. Peace, Dennis

    A building caught my attention in your intro... the one that looksclike a Thai pan flute....The food like the Tams and Yams look super!!! When im in Thailand i make sure to try a different Som Tam everyday....im not a fan though of Tilapia.... much prefer pla- chon and pla let.... Cringing and yearning as you started dipping your rice on the somtam dressing!!!! Btw... ever featured Yam Pen Pen... used to eat it in Pratunam but got scared about 6years ago....

I don’t actually know this one, and Yam Pen Pen, I have never heard of that :-) I only lived in Bangkok for one year but, I am surprised there are so many foods I’ve never heard of it :-) maybe I should not be surprised, Thailand must have 1000 different dishes, maybe more

      @@JoelsTastyRide yam pen pen is live small jumping shrimp....it is very hot and its fun to see the shrimp jump on your plate.... unfortunately i had the runs once in Bangkok and once in Manila ( there is a Philippine version...)and i was warned that pollution or waters are getting contaminated.... then about Pla Let which if iam right is gourami which has sweeter flesh and does not taste muddy... pla chon is a mudfish but the meat is pristine... i dont know why Tilapia unless its reared in salt water ( it adapts) has that muddy, algae like flavor.... but those Salads are wonderful... ask the older set about Yam Pen Pen ... it might still be safer to eat far off from the city....
