The funniest part about this scene is, this is the first time in the show where Barry is visibly shot. Everyone that tried to shoot him, could never touch him. It’s very ironic that someone untrained with firearms, was the one to give Barry his first and final blow. Which kinda makes Barry’s final words “oh wow” even more compelling. Gonna miss this show.

That's the kind of brutal irony the real world is made of. Honestly bill hader and Alec berg have an intimate understanding of death and killers, the life that follows with being one, the cruel irony of it all, and you telling yourself "wow" when the one you didn't expect bites back and gets you. It's honestly hilarious that those were his last words because I'm sure those are the last thoughts and words of many killers who eventually die by the gun

Barry has survived so much and gotten out of so many tight spots by refusing to accept his situation. He's had the devil's luck throughout so many moments in the show. The MOMENT he finally comes to term with this, he gets shot and killed almost instantly. Like the consequences were waiting until that moment to finally catch up to him. But in a bizarre way, he actually truly got the life he wanted for his family, instead of the superficial one they lived before. At least that's how I interpreted it, but this show is so grey in it's morality that I may feel different after watching it again. This show really was something else.

In a way, Barry got what he wanted. He ran away with the love of his life, had a child, and in the end, after his death, he was seen as the hero he wanted his son to believe he was.
Barry is pretty much the only person who won in the end. Gene is in prison, No Ho Hank is dead, Sally will never be the same person she was, and Fuches served his time in prison, but in the end he redeemed himself to Barry and was out of his life. You might be thinking, "Well Barry is dead, that's not a win," but if he would have continued to live out the life he had planned for him and his family after the events with No Ho Hank, he wouldn't be seen as the "hero" of this journey. We as the audience would've hated him more because of this, but in this scene we get a small glimpse that Barry was finally going to do the right thing by turning himself in, and his reward was getting shot by Gene. Had Gene not shot Barry and actually cleared his name, Gene would be seen as the hero, not Barry. I'm still sad that Barry is dead, but honestly this was a satisfying ending, and I am really eager to see what Bill Hader has in store for us next.

That "oh wow" was the funniest thing in this entire season.
Edit: I never thought I rooted for the protagonist of the story getting killed than Barry Berkman. Even if characters that deserve to die like Walter White, Tony Soprano, Jax Teller, or even Nucky Thompson, I never wanted them to die. But, Barry is such a damn different story in the first place. I legimately wanted to be killed at the end of season 2 when he killed almost everybody in the monastery, without even blinking. The moment when Gene shot him, I was just lmao. This show is one of the best of all time, I'm glad this show new when to stop, you cant say that about every show.

This scene is so sad to me. Barry was finally ready to do the right thing, accept responsibility, and help people. A nobody like Tom was able to save the day and talk down a mass murderer into turning himself in. Gene could've been cleared for all the things he'd been framed for and he'd be recognized as the victim of Barry that he truly was. Then he murdered Barry. I suppose he deserved it, but it is too bad that he had to go right before he was able to get the best remaining outcome for both of them.

I noticed that even the colors in the room where Barry dies are symbolic. Throughout the series, the imagery of dark doorways signifies his dark side. But here, there are white walls and a bright window symbolizing truth, purity, and cleanliness, because in this room, Barry, for the first time, confesses his wrongdoings and wants to take responsibility for them. But it's too late.
Therefore, the red curtains foreshadow blood dripping down from Barry's head to the white armchair.
Additionally, there are dolls on the shelves that are lifeless, just like a corpse.

No but this is the show. Barry was going to turn himself in but gene killed him, effectively killing whatever chance he had to redemption in the eyes of the law and the public. The moment he perpetuated the cycle of revenge and violence he lost. It’s the show over and over and over again.

Even more than that, him saying he'll turn himself in just before getting shot acts as this "ultimate cleanse" and lets Barry be completely Redeemed within the universe.
They literally did the Osama bin laden joke from family guy of him accepting Jesus just before getting shot and then going to heaven lmao

It's when Tom tells him it's to save Gene is what makes him change. He denies it when Sally suggested it but when given the opportunity to be Gene's savior he asks to turn himself in. His redemption was the morally correct choice but still an extension of his ego

I think, for me, I consider Barry redeemed. It doesn't matter we didn't see him arrested (again) it was that he truly made the right call. In the entire show he never even CONSIDERED turning himself in, he would kill anyone to prevent it, the same way he went to kill Jim as soon as Gene said Jim knew Barry killed Janice. The fact he committed to it here tells me it was real. But to allow him to do it would rob Gene of a sensible ending to his arc. He constantly chose fame via parading around Janice's corpse (metaphorically, to quote a friend of mine), and picked that over every relationship including that of his with his son. He killed Barry knowing the consequences but no longer being able to care once Leo wrote him off entirely. Barry couldn't live and it be a satisfying ending for Gene.

when i saw the scene at 3:45 i instantly thought of “the death of marat” painting by jacques-louis david. this scene still almost looks like if the painting were expanded for us to see his killer. also very similar is the way in which barry and marat were viewed both in life and death. such an interesting and beautiful ending.
