    Kudos to Giro organisers with these 2 stages designed to provide excitement on the first weekend. Much better than TTs or flat stages to get the Giro rolling and attract viewers, especially new fans to the sport.

      I enjoy any exciting racing, but ...
      I prefer Grand Tours that start with an ITT prologue, then have a sprint stage or two or three, then a stage with a not severe climb at the end (like stage 2 in the 2021 TdF, up the Mur de Bretagne, when MVDP won), then some climbs. I like Grand Tours when the leaders jersey has a chance to change hands a number of times in the first week.

    Totally agree on the road tubeless issue. I love sitting on the side of the road putting a tube in my tubeless tire with sealant all over my hands and bike!😂

    Felix, Mikkel, Domen and Rafal pull super hard for 5km and rest of the 5km Tadej goes all by himself! And when he attacked, barely anyone could stay on his wheel for long except for Ben(which was a bad idea)! Top GC guys formed a group and worked together and still lost 30 seconds to him! Need I say more?
    G Thomas rode with maturity towards the end though unlike Ben. Even with a super strong team like Ineos, G could barely make a dent when Tadej exploded! He did say it’s “gonna get real now” on Strava!

    I agree with you on tubless. Souch a mess when fixing a flat. Thats why im sticking with TPU. And its much easier to remove and mount a clincher tire to the wheels.

    Great ride from UAE and Pog. Pog’s flat is a reminder of the Giro’s fragility, anything can happen at any time. It’s clear that Pog is the strongest rider and that nobody can match his acceleration on the climbs. Pog should conserve until the next steep climb and ride conservatively.

    Chris did you catch at about 4hrs 7mins into the race as the are approaching Inter-Giro bonuses (I believe), Sean Kelly says he “doesn’t think the riders will be racing for the next time bonifications". I was so surprised that I did a doubletake and rewind'd to confirm. ROFL 🤣🤣🤣

      I love Chris, but his views on this are archaic, and his assessment is inaccurate. Tadej's tire was completely flat, he said it himself in the interview, he was riding on the rims. Rims, whether they are carbon or aluminum have no traction on the road, wet or dry, it's like riding on ice. Sealant can be an inconvenience sometimes when your tire goes completely flat but it saves you from tons of small punctures, and the entire peloton is riding on tubeless systems with sealant now, because it works.

      Tubeless tech is for wide volume tires with thick casings to be run at low psi. Mountain biking or gravel. Tubeless is a game changer for trail, but silly on road tires.

    Absolutely spot on on Tubolito tubes and Schwalbe tires. I also use Schwalbe Aerothon inner tubes, too. BTW, Tubolito patch kits (with Camplast cement) WILL PATCH Tubelito’s & Aerothon tubes!

      Tpu is the way to go. For all the stated reasons and space they save. Carrying two spares in less space then one regular tube is great.

    Been riding tubeless and hookless Giant SLR1 wheels with Schwalbe Pro One TLEs for the last 4yrs and they are awesome. No problems what so ever.

    Fantastic call Chris, you explained what would happen on the Butterfly Effect after stage one if Ineos rides on the front today. Well, well, a lot of Knuckle Headism! You should manage a team or the major networks are making a big mistake not to employ you .     I watch the whole race at Max and even watch that last segment twice for it was really action packed. It became even better after watching this episode for Mr Horner did a magnificent job analyzing the events that I was not able to get from Max commentators. Thank you also for your insight on tubeless tire on road bikes for I feel left behind and thought I am making a mistake not switching to it. Again, many thanks !

    I've been riding Tubalito TPUs for 4-5 years. They've been great, but i switched to Ridenow, which are the same thing only 1/4 of the price. They've been great, and so far, so good. Side note- i ran tubeless about 5 years ago- what a hassle. I wanted something that felt like a tubular, and it was close, but a huge mess. TPU tubes are really the way to go.

      I experimented for a year with tubeless on my CX bike, mainly riding on-road, and did not find it worth the bother. They are better suited to low-pressure tyres on mountain bikes. I have yet to try TPUs.

    Always the best race recap. The only thing that would make it better is if you can get video.
    Your depth of experience and with the enthusiam you deliver it with makes racing more exciting.
    This country should be showing the classics and monuments on regular tv with you in the "booth" and some other person who isn't a stiff. I bet people would tune in if they gave it a chance.

      NBC always kept the racing so simple. The winner was the best and he did nothing wrong ever. I always preferred how TNT basketball broke down the game and explained what the players did right and wrong. When I raced there was never a perfect race, even the ones I won were not perfect. 👊🦋

    Narvaez can't climb like Pogacar that's why I knew today's stage he would drop it was too much for him even after Pogacar fell I can't wait for the bigger stages later in the Giro it's gonna be good and hopefully Pogacar doesn't have the problem he did today👊🦋🦋

    Sounds like those folks in marketing at the tubeless bike tire companies forgot to sign you. I love it! If I were Tadej, I would be looking to loan the jersey out for a week or so. However, I have never seen a rider have so much more horsepower than the other pros. He might be thinking something different.

    tubeless is fine if done right for the right use case, I've been doing it for about 5 years now, I have had punctures seal up on long rides miles from anywhere, I have a seat bag full of stuff to fix a flat but so far have never had to use it. Coming from my bmx bike that loses a tube from time to time and not having to stop riding completely or have to pull a wheel (especially a back wheel and having to remount and redo the chain tension and center the wheel etc.) to get back up and running is life changing.

    Wow, everyone in the comments today is debating tubeless or tubular, emotive subject clearly. Great ride from UAE and TP, they should be able to have a relavitely easy day today if the choose. Get their team leader to 3km to go with the other GC riders then sit up. If Poggi takes anywind what so ever today it will be for advertising and sponsorship reasons.     I’ve been on tubeless tires for 5 years and had 3 sidewall flats that were thankfully on the flats at about 22 mph. What you saw happen to Tadej is the dangerous aspect of tubeless. You have between 5 and 10 seconds to completely stop. If you’re going as fast as the pro peloton rides, you’re cutting it very close. Downhill at 50 mph, forget it. There are two solutions: 1) higher pressures (all my flats have been at around 72 psi) and 2) inserts. However, tubeless tires do have the potential for catastrophic crashes.

      I think this was more about hook vs hookless rims. I'm pretty sure they run inserts for the spring classics but for the Giro, they probably would not want the inserts with the added weight.

    As always, great recap. And looks like Pogačar rode the final climb by feel, without a computer. Considering later he said he wasn't familiar with this climb, that was impressive. BTW, not 100% in agreement with you about tubeless tires... IMO what's questionable here is about running the Enve 'hookless' rims and not running tubeless tires. Had he been on a set of 'hooked' rims with tubless tires, pretty sure he would not have had the blowout after the corner and taken the small fall. Hearing Enve is not doing so well right now, maybe UAE will get a new rim sponsor next season and run some 'hooked' rims.

    I just tried tubeless after being skeptical about them for years... Snakebite puncture, sealant spraying everywhere. Totally impossible to repair out on the roadside. The sealant did nothing except make a mess. It's a case of mass hypnosis or something that got everyone to buy into it.

    Hey - mad respect for your tactical insights... you should be a Director Sportif with your own team! I also think tubeless tires are not just a horrible pain in the ass but are dangerous, and the new hookless rims are even moreso. Imagine if a tire goes flat like that when you're bombing a decent at 80 K/hr - you wouldn't have a chance...
    I also think that tire diameters have shrunk in an effort to make them more airtight for tubeless compatibility, which makes it hard for all but the biggest gorillas to get the damned bead over the rim when they're new - regardless of whether you're going to put slime or a tube in it.

      Tire diameters haven’t shrunk, the rims are different dimensions because of the hookless design. You can take the same tire and try to install it on a clincher rim, and it will probably install easier. However, you can also try to install that same tire with another, different brand clincher rim, and it may be more or less difficult than the first. There is a technique that expert mechanics use to install tires on any rim, but it requires a lot of practice.

I do wonder on deep section wheels why some marginally intelligent engineer hasn't thought to build a V-section center channel into the the area inside the rim where the spoke nipples anchor where you could still tape off the nipples and yet have enough room to work the bead way closer in towards the hub on the opposite side, to make getting the tires bead over the rim manageable. Definitely going to be paying much closer attention to this construction detail when buying my next pair of hoops!

      @@craighamley3669 I’m not an engineer, but I believe there’s a safety reason why hookless rims can’t have a deeper cavity in the spoke bed. Don’t quote me though, my recollection is a little fuzzy, but I do seem to remember that that area is shallow by design.

    I tell you, Max sucks I didn't even get to watch the last hour. I paused the race because I had to go do something, came back, and was going to finish watching the race and couldn't finish it. And then they don't have any replays of the race like on Flo or Peacock. Then you can't watch the DOWN hill race at all. I hope this changes. Peacock needs to get all the big races.

      I signed up for Max specifically to watch the Giro in the USA, but I did it directly with Cinemax/HBO rather than going through Amazon, because the service never worked properly when I had it as part of a Comcast Xfinity package. Now I just have Comcast as my ISP (because I have no other options where I live) and it works great. I can watch it live or watch the replay. I do have the ad-free version and I don't know if that affects it, but it sounds like you're not getting the service you should be.

      That’s what happens to me when I watch Peacock. They take forever to upload the replay of the race. If you get to far behind you are screwed. I miss the old GCN website with just cycling videos all over to pick from and most importantly why do I have to minutes shifting through other sports before I find my cycling races. 🤔😬🦋🚲

    It was funny to listen to the commentary about how ineos had to lead because they had the leader's jersey (although later they talked about how it could only be a psychological advantage and was probably a tactical mistake) . All I could think of Chris calling them knuckleheads. Both Ineos and the analysis.

    Tadej Pogačar is not just running tubeless, but also hookless. The tire came off because there's no hook that would help hold even a flat tire in place. I've been running tubeless with hooked rims on 30c tires with no problems and lots of punctures that would have been flats with tubes are automatically fixed. Tubeless on narrower tires isn't going to work right at higher pressures

    It seemed like Tadej was looking over his shoulder a lot more than usual on the final climb. It looked a lot different than in his attacks at Cataluyna where he was just riding his own race. Do you think he was holding back?

      He looked tired to me. Its just that even if he's at 95 or 90% hes still better than this field. But yea he looked gassed. Its not hard to imagine why after all the effort he had to put in yesterday after his team dropped the ball.

      @@NeilHMohamed He looked normal. After he fell and had a bike change he had no head unit on the bike for the final climb, so he rode on feel. He established a 30 sec lead and maintained it also by looking back. He said it himself in the post race interview that the last 2km were basically just managing the lead and pace.

    Thanks for another very intelligent and interesting report Chris! I have tubes in my 38mm tyres, and have been thinking of replacing tubes with sealant. Tadej and Chris makes me less confident in that swap. I mostly go on bad and ok asphalt, but also some forestroad (dirt/gravel) . Should I keep my tubes? I guess that choosing tubes or tubeless is linked to tyredimension. Where is the limit? maybe tubes from 38mm and thinner, and tubeless from 39mm to thicker?

      I tried tubeless for the first time this season on my road bike. They were fine until I hit a pothole at moderate speed (30 mph) on a steep downhill on a rough country road. The tire bottomed out (90 psi pressure 25 mm tire) and I got two small holes (like spoke diameter). The sealant didn't do anything but spray all over the place. I stopped right away, thankfully. My wife had to come pick me up because I couldn't repair a stupid flat or get the tire to inflate. They sell repair kits like you'd use on a car tire or tractor tire but I didn't have those at the time. I found it to be a major hassle with minimal upside. those wheels are now just sitting in my basement--btw, they leak air then the tire pops off the bead after some period of time!

      With 38mm touring tires, the tubeless system should work better than for narrower road racing tires. The minimum tire width for hookless tubeless rim systems is generally agreed to be around 30mm. However, while people are focusing a lot on tire widths, the systems also depend on how you use your bike. How often do you bike? Do you bike every day? How many hours do you bike at a time, and how far do you travel? Do you pack your bike for airplane trips? And so forth… Tubeless systems aren’t magic. They are more technical and require more maintenance. If you don’t ride your bike at least once a week, the liquid sealant pools and solidifies. You cannot let the tires go flat in storage, or else the tires may separate from the rims, and you have to clean out the old sealant from the rim and tires, and do everything over again. The only time they are less maintenance is if it keeps you from having to stop and fix a flat while riding. They can explode during an airplane flight and spray sealant all over your gear. Yes, they can reduce the number of times you have to fix a flat while riding. But there are many ways they require more maintenance when you are not riding. I spend more money on the sealant every year than on tubes. Tubes can be patched and reused. You have to carry a tube anyway, as a backup. It’s just the way tubeless systems work.

Listentening to your input I guess I will stick with tubes for some more weeks and decide later, I downgraded from 45 to 38mm this year and have not tested on forest roads (dirt/gravel) yet, only asphalt. The idea with tubeless is both save a bit of weight and allow slightly softer inflating (I do have some damping on my bike, 3 cm lefty damper and kingpin ). I am 108 kg heavy and runs 46 psi pressure now. I ride my bike roughly 4-5 times a week maybe 100 km in total, maybe 200. I like my tubesetup on the asphalt now, so maybe it is the best?

      @@erlendsteren9466 It looks like your tire width would be okay with hookless tubeless tires. I couldn’t find the exact specifications on your rim and tire combination, so I suggest you look that up to be sure, but I’m guessing it would work without too many caveats. I think tubeless will offer the characteristics you’re looking for. The question is what are the tradeoffs involved, and are the advantages worth the extra effort. The sealant isn’t cheap, and it can get very messy. You ride frequently enough that you’re always checking your tires. Hookless tubeless does make more sense for a gravel bike than a road bike. If you ride in on roads that commonly cause flats, it is probably worthwhile. Otherwise, I’ve put many miles on clincher and tubeless wheels while gravel riding, and I would say unless I’m racing the downtime difference hasn’t been a night and day difference. However, this definitely depends on the road conditions and riding environments. If I’m riding in the desert with lots of prickly plants, I think the advantages of tubeless increase. However, you still have to carry tubes as an emergency backup.

    Correction to your video: a friend of mine did a careful analysis. Pogacar used hookless rims - Enve SES 4.5. I think we should blame these not the tubeless system!

      The first week in the TdF if it has a normal flat week of racing, I think is the most dangerous of all the GT because every rider is sooo fit there. After the first few mountain stages it gets more normal racing with a bit less crashes. 👊🦋
