Hi Bella!!! I’m suuuuuuper grateful for this video of yours!!! I’ve just finished my one week experiment of decreasing salt and I feel + look so much better!!! I’ve always been a gal who like heavy flavored food so I naturally salt my meat a lot, plus I work out every day so I figured I can always just sweat the salt out of my body. But cutting the salt back makes my face a whole size smaller and I feel much more energetic now my workout- a huge thank you genius Bella!!!

That's so weird. When I went carnivore, I didn't salt much and I always felt lethargic, especially at the gym. Also I had this insatiable thirst as well and the more I drank the more dehydrated I became. I started adding salt to my water and all those problems went away

    • @SaucyJack88
      @SaucyJack88 Před 3 lety +67

@Dave Nustain lots of misinformation in this thread. Salt is vital for survival. Salt contains sodium, and sodium is essential for blood regulation, the maintenance of cell membranes, as well as the regulation of your body's pH levels. If you eat a lot of tomatoes, cheese, or processed meats that has sodium-nitrate added to it, you might not need to add any salt to your diet. But if you don't, you're gonna need that salt, at least 0,5 grams per day, but preferably more. Kidneys don't remove salt, they simply split the sodium-chloride into sodium and chloride and add it to the bloodstream to create new blood cells, while at the same time filtering old blood out and turning it into urine. Not enough salt is actually way more damaging to your kidneys than too much salt, but sufficed to say, both situations are bad. Just listen to your body. If you crave salt, it probably means your kidneys aren't getting enough salt.

I live in a desert and salt is literally life out here. It’s so easy to be dehydrated here because people don’t always realize just how much they are sweating when it dries really quickly. Personally I do better with copious amounts of high quality salt like pink salt or sea salt and use no salt and salt on basically everything including in my water. But some people don’t like salt and don’t do well with salt. Glad you figured out what your body needs.

@@SteakandButterGal I have been carnivore for 4y and keto for another 4y before that. I experimented a lot with salt as well. I lift weights regularly and I like long hikes. my conclusion is that salt supplementation is necessary otherwise, I get painful cramps or even spasms that may last for a minute or so! however, there's a sweet spot and no need to take teaspoons of salt! I found that just salting my steaks does the trick. if you overdo it, you might get diarrhea ad feel thirsty all the time and wake up in the middle of the night to pee. I believe people can get away without salt if they're not very active, but if you're active, find a sweet spot where you don't get cramps/spasms and do not feel thirsty and do not have to get up to pee at night.

This was super valuable for me. I did a TON of research before starting carnivore (it’s almost all anecdotal, but it gave me some general ideas of what to experiment with) and the advice was often to salt more, more more more salt. So I’ve been pushing myself to salt beyond my normal taste.
I’m not having any acute problems 2 weeks in that may point to salt, just really bad restless legs at night, which (I think?) suggested magnesium deficiency. But “more salt” felt off for me. Going to cut it back and see what happens. Thank you for all the effort you put into making this a quality, information-dense video. ❤

I'm on a low salt diet due to an old sports injury.
I also live in the deep south, and I don't use air conditioning to keep acclimated to the weather = lots of sweating.
I need to add magnesium and sodium to my diet. I use salt substitute for my potassium.
When I was unemployed I found it was cheaper to buy magnesium pills than to buy magnesium-rich food.
I drink milk to get calcium, but I keep calcium pills on hand for heartburn - slowly drinking a glass of water with a calcium pill dissolved in it is very effective.

I literally just finished telling someone how important salt is for retaining electrolytes when you go carnivore, opened CZcams, and saw your video in my subscription box (not exaggerating the time frame, that was exactly the sequence of events). LOL. Oops. I've heard conflicting info about how necessary it is to consume salt, though it appeared to me that people who say no salt are in the extreme minority, so I didn't consider that idea all that much. However, your video has caused me to think I should give it a try, because I always find it hard to wake up in the morning, but I never assumed it was related to salt. So who knows? I like to experiment on myself as well, so I'm gonna start waning off of salt starting from today. Only thing is that I do work out five days a week, so not sure how well no salt would work, but that's what experimenting is for. However, my food is salty enough that I find myself sometimes quaffing nearly a gallon of water afterward in probably under an hour, so I could definitely stand to cut back on it.
One question: Over the course of how much time did you wane off of the salt after you experimented with consuming it?

Heavily. It didn't sound like me at all. WHen I cut salt out, the snoring stopped. I think the reason salt made my sleep so poor was that the bloating caused a narrower airway to breathe through resulting in difficulty breathing especially at night and in certain sleeping positions. Salt is a vital mineral though... animals in nature seek salt rocks and lick them (not sure if you were aware of that, I'm a hunter myself). We sometimes put salt rocks out in the wild and watch animals come to lick the salt.
However, too much of a good thing can become a bad thing. But that doesn't mean you should completely avoid it.

No, no,no. Salt is not a vital mineral, sodium is. Herbivores lick salt sometimes, carnivores such as humans, lions, tigers, omnivores, DO NOT. They get their sodium from meat, potassium is more important than sodium. Salting food is a stupid manmade habit , as awful as eating sugar. IF you eat meat you are getting all the sodium you need, 300mg a day.

It has been difficult to get my electrolytes figured out since I live in SW Florida where it's hot and humid much of the year and I mostly work outside where I sweat a lot and I work out at the gym a few times a week but it sounds like there are signs to watch for to see if we're getting too much. I was getting real bad cramps on carnivore so, I started adding in carbs to gain a little fat to help store some electrolytes, as well as to help get enough calories for a very physically demanding construction job as well as trying to bulk up some in the gym. I was very lean and probably wasn't storing any electrolytes at all but I maybe I was getting too much sodium since I was waking up twice a night to pee. It has been very frustrating.... I have a brother who works construction and he sweats all day long. He was having all kinds of health problems and was seeing various doctors. One day, a nurse told him, "You're a salt-dumper." He never realized that he was excreting more sodium and electrolytes than a lot of people would doing the same job so, he started eating salt out of his hand and started feeling better. Hopefully, I'll get this all figured out. Part of my problem might be drinking too much coffee. So many factors to consider...

It seems that foods have the optimal ratio and many people would see less issues by cutting out salt. Most probably drink too much water as well, further messing up electrolyte balance. I like sticking to a 1:1 sodium to potassium ratio, I think at least if doing strict keto it's a good way to go. You tend not to need as much salt with enough carbs/sugar though but I still generally stick to that, at least going by totals by the end of the day or even a week, might have days where it's closer to 2:1 or 1:2 just so it's balanced enough in the long run. Sodium causing high blood pressure is mostly a myth, it shouldn't if you have enough potassium along with it, so as long as you do and stick to high enough quality salt for most people it shouldn't be an issue to have a few grams a day or even pushing 5-6 grams. I've always had great blood pressure regardless so I'm lucky. I hear recommendations as high as 8 though, can't remember from who.

But cause there's hardly any books and everyone keeps going on about how you need it and they feel good I become fearfull of long term affect and continue eating salt and waking up late and peeing alot with puffy face. 🙁

For "Are you eating past satiety on Carnivore? Have an insatiable hunger?" question, I also notice that if I eat leaner meats, I get hungry much faster.

If you are watching this video and you are thinking about cutting back on salt... Keep an eye on your heart rate. If goes up it might be related to dehydration due to not retaining enough water. I'm a lot more sensitive to dehydration when I eat low carb. It can only be remedied by adding lots of salt and water

I had this issue, and drinking salt water is not a good fix. It actually dehydrates you even more. It feels okay for a while but once you urinate it out it’s back to the same thing. It just blows you up and it will eventually release. Your body needs carboHYDRATES to stay hydrated. Not necessarily grains because those are dry and actually pull more water from the body. But things like natural fruit. They have H3O2 which is more hydrating than water. Plain water dehydrates the body, the more you drink the more thirsty you feel because it’s just flushing away your nutrients. Fruits with its natural juices hydrate you along with water soluble vitamins. Salt is a rock and is not the same thing as Sodium, research this. Salt is sodium chloride. Just because it contains sodium doesn’t mean we should be eating it. We would never think of consuming sodium hydroxide. Only cause salt SEEMS safe and is highly ADDICTIVE is why people keep using it. It is a natural dehydrator. That is why it’s used to preserve food, to remove as much water content. It’s very DRYING.

Salt is a very important nutrient for us. 'The Salt Fix' is a great book to learn about the benefits of salt, while Dr. Fung has made a very good video on the benefits of salt. I use only high quality red-Himalayan salt.

Ooo ditch the Himalayan salt and go Celtic salt or regular sea salt man! Your salt has trace minerals of mercury lead uranium etc dangerous stuff even in trace amounts

I've been so curious about this lately... Whether or not to mess with my electrolytes and whether I've been maybe throwing myself off by doing so. I so get cramps and that kind of thing.. headaches etc sometimes... But I've been suspicious of my electrolyte use. Not the least of which because it doesnt seem to help! So I have been eating some of the egg shells to balance my electrolytes with calcium and bind some loose stool. Definitely only a little as an experiment, and it has shifted my poops pretty immediately. I'm thinking I'll try not salting and see what happens. I am someone who can sweat a lot at times, but honestly, I'm wondering if the amount of sweat in high intensity activities might lessen with less salt.
In the end, it all comes back to... Is this something we would have been doing ancestrally? Does this make sense? Or am I being overly "problem solving" human and getting in the way of nature. Learning every day what it means to "listen to my gut". It's just on point! What a journey!
Sidebar, I really respect how you followed your intuitive cravings or lack thereof with salt in the beginning...
Loving your content so much! I'm so grateful at this time as I'm beginning my carnivore journey and working on healing autoimmune and inflammatory conditions... And be vital! We weren't designed wrong. I believe that. 👏🙏

Great insights! I’ve found myself gravitating away from salt too, but I’m always second guessing myself because of how enthusiastic the carnivore/keto community is about electrolytes. I think a good point to mention would have been that you love chugging down that sweet sweet mineral water... There’s a rad little kick of electrolytes for ya! (Soz if ya did mention it and I missed it!)

I think this whole salt and electrolyte craze is rooted from the keto community- For carnivores, it may be VERY different when it comes to whether or not electrolyte supplements and salting is THAT important!
The mineral water is a good point- I didn't even think of it! I do have phases where I love it and long periods where I do not drink it at all🤔

@Steak and Butter Gal True, we just don't have enough data yet to know!
Oh nice, that's cool it's a cyclical thing. I cannot get enough ice cold San Pellegrino, it's the only thing I ever actually "crave" as a Carnivore. We just invested in a water cooler, with jugs of spring water delivered every week... Partly to try and cut down my addiction 😂
