I'm SO excited to watch this classic movie for the first time and I hope you all enjoy watching along with me!
As with all of my movie commentaries, I unfortunately have to cut large portions of the movie from the video in order for me to actually get these videos up with no issues, so my sincerest apologies if I cut your favorite part or scene.

Shouldn't you be watching the princess diaries ?
I'd like you to do a reaction of "Prizzi's honor" (1985)
The cat was a stray that lived on the set. On the day of shooting this scene, the cat climbed into Brando's lap and got comfortable. So they shot the movie with the cat.
Oh my godddd that’s awesome I love that!
🤠 My favorite actor of all time, Brando, had that effect on animals and people! 😂👍
Actually Frances put it on his lap just to get him comfortable & the rest is history. What's fascinating by this time is Brando refused to memorize the script & only worked off cue cards.
@@rxtsec1 the point of the cue cards... which is oft brought up in many contexts of criticism... is that his method acting works best when an actor is not trying to speak from memory which cues certain expressions of the face. Instead by writing the words on the cards and having to look for them it gives the acting craft of literally having to search for the words which creates the realistic sense that most people do when they are not reading from memory by finding words to express in normal conversation. This was part of the method acting that made him unique in his delivery but was constantly brought up as if he was a diva. Though, he was a diva in many regards the cue cards were part of a refined craft.
That's effing awesome I was able to watch this young but never remembered it till outta high school damn it's old but a classic. I rewatch em at least twice a year
About how they got the horse head into his bed without waking him: That's the unspoken threat. Our guys are good enough to get into your bedroom with a hundred pounds of dead horse bits, stash it in your bed & get away without anyone being the wiser. If we have to come back, there ain't no one who can stop us.
He found out from the newspaper the way we’d find out from a tweet today. They couldn’t call him if he wasn’t home. Newspapers printed news as it happened if it was big enough. Michael was out all day with Kay when it happened and while the papers printed the story. His family couldn’t get in touch with him because he was out and about.
True ~ when the Loma Prieta earthquake struck in 1989, we were cut off from my sister for three days, and that freeway that pancaked was the one she took home from work every day. Instantaneous communication during tragedies wasn't a thing.
@@lilychris811 Oh that’s terrifying. Yes, m old enough to remember that if you were out shopping and there was an emergency in the family, you didn’t find out until you got home.
What! No cell phone??!!
many newspapers used to run afternoon editions, with late news or ball scores. more often than not though, re-postings from the morning edition.
Hard to believe it's been 50 year's since this movie came out, happy anniversary
Luca Brazi (the scary man talking to himself) is played by real life mobster Lenny Montana, a member of the Colombo crime family. Johnny Fontana is based on Frank Sinatra., and the movie was From Hear to Eternity. Nice reaction, now for pt 2.
Luca in the novel, took a baby that he sired from a jewish woman, and threw it into the furnace, before killing the mother, because he was disgusted that he sired a half-jewish son, and thought it would look bad if it got out he was sleeping with a jewish woman.
Fun fact: all the Brando's speech on the first scene were improvised. They were just rehearsing, but it was so good that the director turned on the cameras.
- “IM THE HEAD OF THE COMMISSION. IM THE BOSS OF BOSSES” - GIANNI RUSSO 🤣🤣🤣
Rip to a great actor Marlon Brando we still miss you, Godfather
It’s not just about the cat but the way the cat is treated here - how Brando is totally comfortable with the animal - able to speak freely the script and play with the cat at the same time. The cat makes it super-authentic because you know it doesn’t follow any script and yet you see it perfectly implemented in the movie.
Its 1945, you cant just send a text.
The beginning, with the undertaker asking for the favor. He was very scared. He had a stereotypical idea of a mafia boss and feared that he would be in his debt and be forced to be involved in serious crimes and murder... But the Don's favors are never to ask anyone to do something that they wouldn't do themselves (as you see spoiler, he only asks him to perform his regular job to the best of his ability) the don didn't subjugate innocent people, when he did favors,it was like planting seeds and someday if he needs something, he can call on them.. But he would never make that poor funeral director commit murder or anything crazy.
You miss the important scene in the movie.. "Leave the gun, Take the canolli"
When she said "I like animals" I was like "then ur not gonna like what's coming"
There was a time when men were expected to act like Vito Corleone. To act like men do today was seen as unacceptable.
Your comment about Fontane needing a pill shaver for his linen jacket made me chuckle - that's raw silk; it's supposed to have those little bumps and "imperfections".
Oh..... Oops. 😅 lol
"Mob don't work for free!!!" YOUR BEST LINE!!! lol!!!
This is hands down one of the best movies ever made. Even though it’s over 50 years old it still holds up great.
Actually the mob had a very strict set of rules. I guess sometimes those rules were broken, but one of the rules was that wife, kids etc were totally off limits
Family actually isn't fair game, mafia don't hurt family members.
In Italy it's different.
@ShinRaPresident you’re saying exactly what the op said, in Italy mafia families (blood/married relations) ARE fair game.
the scene were Brando cried after Pacino said he was with him now....was not scripted. that was really Brando crying.
This movie is absolute gold, I'm real glad you enjoyed this great movie. This movie basically set the standard for modern day mob movies yet they still don't compare with it.
They had a evening post back in the day, they would publish twice a day.
I remember twice-a-day mail delivery, too.
You cut the bit where Sonny speaks out of turn at the meeting with Sallozzo (the drug guy). That was rather important because it's the reason Sallozzo thinks if he kills the the Don, Sonny will take over and eventually accept the deal he wanted.
4:08 I love the cat! I especially love how he has the cat's head in his hand like a little fur ball.❤
I highly recommend listening to the Danish symphony orchestra's godfather orchestral suite. Its just beautiful
Print newspapers (used to) have two editions (morning & evening). Pre-TV, the evening edition is how you'd get that day's news most quickly. It is not particularly surprising Michael learned of the shooting that way. A possible alternative would be hearing it on the radio (assuming he was near one by chance). A telegram would be another common option, but, like a phone call, he'd have to wait until he got home to receive it.
The cat just wandered onto the set, and Brando thought the scene would be better if he was holding the cat.
The Don is gentle with kitty cats!
Fun Fact: The actor of Luca Brasi was an actual enforcer for the Colombos
You edited out an important part of the scene where Solozzo comes to Don Corleone to ask for money. In the middle of the meeting, Sonny broke in and tried to convince Vito (the Don) it was a good deal. This made it look to Solozzo that Sonny would be open to a deal if Vito were out of the way. That's why they shot Vito on the street.
Why did he find out via a newspaper? This was before cell phones, or even answering machines. If he was away from home, there was no way to get a message to him. Also, in those days there were two types of papers: morning papers (which had analysis of the previous day's news) and evening papers (which carried breaking news). Kay spotted the headline in an evening paper.
Vito is a composite of many mobsters, but Johnny is Sinatra all the way, and the movie was From Here to Eternity though that was in the 50s
This is one of my favorite movies, and the novel is one of my favorite novels. I was in high school in the late 80s when I read the novel and then saw the movies (I & II) within a week. I actually liked part III overall, but there were problems with it. Thanks for doing this one!!!
The scene with Michael and Sollozzo is the seminal scene of the movie. It is the loss of Michael's innocence. Moreover, it establishes both the cunning and intellect of Michael. The scene begins in the car with Sollozzo apologizing for events only to be declaring himself to be the hunted victim a while later. Michael listens to him and CHALLENGES him because he was listening to Tom Hagen about what might have to happen if his dad dies. He only goes and gets the gun when he realizes there is no possibility whatsoever of Sollozzo backing off.
Yes Sollozzo wouldn't have backed off. The Mafia is built on nothing but greed.
They want to met Michael because they think he is safe as an "ambassador", a "civilian", the last person who would try any rough stuff at the meeting (or so they think).
When Tom and Sonny were young, Tom was on the streets because his drunk abusive father and had a bad eye infection. Sonny was running a small gang of kids. There was a man who was a serial child rapist/murderer, he had been raping and killing boys, he targeted Sonny, Tom killed the man with a nail board.
Sonny had vito adopt him (not formally as vito wanted Tom to keep his own name and parents, even though they were monsters, out of respect to family) and raised him, sent him to law school
The Don told Tom that a lawyer with a briefcase and pen could steal more than twenty men with guns.
did Vito love Tom as his own son? always wondered that.
"The hell is this??"
"it's a message, it means Luca sleeps with the fishes."
*cemented.*
While you kept talking and talking and talking, Pacino explained why they had to kill Sollozzo, because they will make another attempt at Vito and they need to stop him to protect their father
Bit of Hollywood theater: The "Hollywood" sign was originally put up as a temporary advertisement for a housing development called, of course, "Hollywoodland." When the development was sold out, folks did not want the sign taken down. They took off the "Land" part eventually. Of course. It seems totally appropriate that Hollywood would have a a sign that is outsized to the point of extreme exhibitionism and bad taste.
when he says im with you now to the don he beomes the new don
a bit of background on drugs and the legal problems they incur. The opium wars generated a very specific kind of fighting. The drug problem for the West probably started in Shanghaiin the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Shanghai Municipal Police consisted of British, American, and Asian officers but its methods used were what we would refer to today as "dirty fighting": Garrote, use of knives, covert style warfare, etc. This kind of fighting would later go on to formulate the basis of commando training in the UK and the US during ww2 and later. So, the apprehension of Vito at getting involved in the Drug trade was understandable but ultimately flawed given that the U.S. government would later come after the Mob regardless of its involvement in drugs.
thank you so much for this. never knew this. Edward, thank you for your service to our nation .
To be honest.. the horse had it coming.
Marine Corps greens on Michael Corleone
I love that at 7:57, as in Boeing 757, we see an early aviation icon. The Lockheed Constellation. ✈️🤓
Hold everything....
You have GOT to tell me where you got that WB wine glass. I need one!
I actually got it in the WB studio tour in LA 😅
I imagine they would sell them on their website
No horses were harmed during the making of this movie....except the one who lost it's head. 🤣
How would they be able to contact Mike about his father? he has no phone. they don't know where he's at .or where he's hanging out. New York is a big city city. Yeah you're wrong
The sign said hollywoodland until 1949 when they repaired the sign and shortened it to hollywood
How do they find all these adults who've never seen 'The Godfather'? Were these people under a rock all this time?
Not just The Godfather, most if not all famous movies... What are the odds...
26:16 no deal! 😂
Michael was out of town when he found out his dad was shot.
In the days before cell phones it's entirely plausible that the newspapers could find out about an assassination attempt before the family
still happens the media knows stg happened before families
I’m new here but I loved your reaction to my favorite movie. I really hope you do Part II!
Thank you so much! Part II is in the works.... ! ^.^
You’re correct. The film is really about Michael’s slow decent into darkness
Well actually Mike was in the Marines so he probably have seen more deaths, more shit then The Italian mob and this is where he becomes the threat after he becomes the Godfather he doesn't Play by the book the other Families follow he's a Ex- Military he goes straight for the throat of his enemies.
I know he was in the marines. But my pint is still valid
I just finished watching the godfather, love seeing your reactions sweetheart
I have all 3 of the Godfather movie's on DVD
The tune playing during the establishing shots for when Tom arrives in Hollywood is Manhattan Serenade. Classic ol' timey song sung by many singers but the one most familiar to me and thus my favorite was Dinah Shore's.
the cat was not in the script, it was just walking around the set and in typical Brando fashion he used anything he found interesting, like Eva Marie Saint's glove in On The Waterfront
that was a real horse too
Yep. I bet they wanted to get that done quick before the fake blood and horse flesh started to stink.
Mike was trying to get some alone time with Kay, so they went to a hotel for the weekend.
Watch for oranges. They're a symbol of doom in these movies.
i didn't know that 😩😢
now here is a true story about hollywood: Mayer (of MGM fame. which stands for Metro Goldwyn Mayer) would sign up and coming talent. Actresses and Actors. Now, if you signed a contract with Mayer and broke that contract....hed have you killed. Thats a true story.
Louis B Mayer? Sheesh! Who did he have killed?
wow. never knew that at all.
It's an iconic cat.
The mob never had a hard rule against drugs. It was more like be discrete and don't get caught.
In your opinion Would you agree vito corleone is influenced by carlo Gambino? Or vito genovese?. Compared to frank Costello?.
I would definitely say he is more similar to Carlo Gambino and Frank Costello than Vito Genovese. Genovese was pretty famous for being very vicious, violent and had a bad temper whereas Costello and Gambino were known for being calm and being more strategic than ruthless.
The character of Johnny was based on Frank Sinatra
I love Michael balances out the kindness of Don Corleone in taking in Tom Hagen (who isn't even Italian, let alone Sicilian) next to his ruthlessness in forcing the record producer to let Johnny Fontane out his contract. You get the full picture early on in the film.
the pics during the piano playing are real pics the barbershop was the murder of Albert Anastasia
Great performances by everyone in this movie
Regarding Michael finding out via newspaper: back then there would be a late edition. A "Late City Final" edition. So if you notice, they're coming out of a movie. The GOdfather is shot right before the sun goes down, so Michael comes out of the movie, and sees the "Final Edition". (that was as close as you could get to a 24-hour news cycle, other than radio) LOVING this reaction, watching it right now, will save up all my other comments for the end! Definitely subscribing!
In the book, it's clear that Michael lied to the family about where he was, so as to go out with Kaye. So no one tried to contact him in NYC.
Johnny fontaine is Frank Sinatra. Read the book and then watch the biography of Sinatra. It's a direct match.. Sinatra was close with charles luciano, family from same village in Sicily.
"😎"... Ms. Nave, the reason you should vote The Godfather Part 1 as the greatest movie in the whole wide world, is because. I'm going to make you an offer you can't refuse. 😱
this film, is my favorite movie ever. period. the perfect film. one of the few things my dad and I shared....because this was his favorite film.
I love the first two Godfather movies. Second is my favorite but I can’t say the same thing about the third one it kinda stinks IMO 😅😅😅. Make sure you react to “Analyze This” and “Analyze That”. Two hilarious mob comedies starring Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal - you’re gonna love them 😂
2 is my favorite movie of all time & 1 is my 3rd favorite of all time
"Mafia" with Lloyd Bridges was a pretty funny too. Liked the scene where the mob casino was loading all their one dollar bills into dump trucks labeled "Democratic National Committee" because they were making so much money it was too much trouble to count & deposit the ones.
The Hollywood sign originally said Hollywood land.
Michael was at the movies when it happened. Remember, no cell phones then.
The horse head came from a dog food factory.
Johnny Fontana is based on Frank Sinatra
U got to watch Gotti the 1996 version not the new one that one sucks. The 1996 is an awesome movie.
Armand deserved the Emmy and Golden Globe he received.
How about your reaction on "Prizzi's honor"?
Michael was so good at hiding his power level behind a mask of the buttoned down Ivy League "college boy". When he proposed the restaurant double assassination Sonny and Clemenza openly ridiculed him (notice Tom Hagen, canny individual he was refrained from this). Consider- as a decorated, wounded in action marine corp vet of the South Pacific Michael would already have an enemy kill count higher than any hit man in the organization. Think Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, Bataan. He was certainly no stranger to taking human lives in conditions of close range mortal combat, hardly "a mile away" as Sonny insitsts. Yet despite the gross insult to his outstanding wartime record Michael never drops the mask and has both his enemies and family/confederates (future subordinates) continually underestimating him to his great advantage.
They sent mike BECAUSE he wasn't in it, he was supposed to be an innocent mouth piece
The general rule in the mob is family members not involved are not to be touched. Mainly woman & children however rules are meant to be broken
I think Sollozzo picked Michael for that meeting precisely because Michael is a nobody. Sollozzo isn't going to sit at a table with a Corleone gangster who might try to kill him. It's just that everyone completely underestimated Michael. Also, I think he found out about his dad being shot that way because he stays away from the family. No cellphones back then, so even if they have a phone number for him what are the chances he's there when they call? He and Kay seemed to be spending a lot of time out and about.
THE GODFATHER PART II PLEASE!!!
It's coming next!
Coppola used a real horse's head for the horse's head scene without telling the actor, so that his shocked reaction would be as realistic as possible.
My theory is Woltz was drugged by his staff who were paid by the Don
your reaction was sarcastic and comedic.
How would they contact him
17:14 Never figured Luca for a ichthyophile...
Ok, just finished part 1, you have done an OUTSTANDING edit on this movie. And what a great spot to end on! As I said, I just subscribed, looking forward to checking out more of your videos, and even more excited to see what stuff you're going to be reacting to in the future! Good to meet ya, Shelby!!!! Ok ,see you on Part 2 (of part 1)! (PS: LOVING that you know historical context!) The whole Johnny Fontaine thing is loosely based on Frank Sinatra getting the part in "From Here To Eternity" as well as his early involvement with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, although the specifics are apocryphal and no horse heads are alleged!
You are so very kind! Thank you so much!!
smacked him in the face and said act like a man...this I do agree with..BE A MAN...if you a male..BE A DAMN MAN at all times.
It is a cute cat though.
respect needs to be earned 😉
nothing in this world is for free
you guys in the comments want to watch the film the right way watch the 2 hour 50 min version not this version come on. people acting like they watched the whole film
The cats are fair game too
The Press Camera that was distroyed at the Wedding cost about 30 to 70 dollars in the early 1950s. About 700 dollars in today's money. People may have made less back then but they paid less. Today we make more and pay more. Inflation for Convience Me Thinks
They never go after the kids
how, there are no cells phones or tv
Women and children and family members who are not involved in the business are off limits in the mob. Also you watched Luca die, why were you shocked when they found out?
Please react to the movie Heat with Pacino and De Niro.
I don’t know why and I don’t like how people (even the same characters) pronounce CORLEONE two different ways interchangeably.
oh my gosh yeah there were several instances while i was watching and editing that i got confused on how the name was supposed to be pronounced
IN the novel, one of the HUGE reasons why the war started, was because Tom, who is not 100% Sicilian, was a made man in the Family and was chief consul. it was an afront to the other families.
the top dogs in the drug trade seldom gets caught
Sorry but all the splicing chased me away. The five seconds you saved in length by cutting every other sentence of the opening monologue is a waste of editing time and make it nearly unwatchable.
It has to be that way in order to prevent being copyright claimed. I can’t play the movie in its entirety.
I understand. I'm not trying to be a dick. But you might consider not chopping such a powerful scene. You can pause elsewhere.Just saying. But it's your channel. Do as you wish.
