This is how I convince a chicken/turkey to sit on eggs that is not hers and in a strange location.

- I get asked almost every day how I get a turkey to sit on chicken or duck eggs and this is how it works, the big first step is to be sure the bird is broody. Most birds will happily take any egg if there broody, might take a few hours of complaining before they settle down though, especially if you moved them to a new place.

She's a beautiful turkey, and I love her coloring.
She is retired now and looking beter than ever.
She liked her new digs.....straw floor, private space. A good Mom is a good Mom....she is a champ.
She seemed happy with it...lol
She's a good mama💖
She has been for a very long time.

She is a good old girl, a few more like her and you will be set, well done.
Most turkeys are like this, but not all...lol
lifeinthailand can you do a chicken update
lifeinthailand I have watched my father put duck eggs under hens, when ducklings go in water the hen goes nuts trying to call them back !
lol they way she looked at the camera when you said she was a big bird
lol
What a good momma. I love all the peeping and noises she makes. The ducks where having a great time in the water. They are so crazy. What kind of eggs did you give the turkey?
I gave her chicken eggs this time.
mocka girls
lifeinthailand any particular breed of chicken?
How did you pack those eggs together for her?
My chickens are a Rhode island red mix.
What a Beautiful momma! Take good care of her ❤️👍
She is a keeper for sure.
You have an exceptionally fine hen turkey there and it is a credit to your care for her that she trusts you and has become such a good broody and mother. Just a suggestion though, if you put her on eggs at night the process would be even easier, she would go straight on the eggs rather than spend time checking out the area. This time period can be crucial if you have to move a bird with eggs or if you ever have to transfer eggs that are already partially developed to another bird. All the very best from Normandie, Sue
That is what I said in the video, I did it at the very worst time, it should be done at night.
I should have listened to the end but I stopped when you said 'that's it'. It was my job when I was a child to feed our turkeys at night to get them back into the orchard so they would roost in the apple trees and be safe, we had 300 or so, so it was a pretty impressive sight to see them all foraging together! Your video was very nostalgic for me, I hope some day to have enough room to get a couple of turkeys! All the very best from France, Sue
That would be something to see for sure, turkeys are very cool birds.
Thanks for all the Natural Turkey raising videos....these have been extremely helpful to me. I like your approach to keeping these birds. You clearly know what you are doing and love your birds too. Thanks!
Thank you
I think I can make out what she was saying. Oh no. Not again. You think I don't know they're chicken eggs. I do all the work. Oh but they are so cute cute cute. Last time though.
:D
mr10man69,....you're making me laugh,...hmm...besides the heart you probably took the scarecrow's brain as well! ;)
She loves it, I once had her hatch out 3 lots of babies one after the other, she did well with them all.
mocka
Hahahahahaha
Excellent Video 👍 I Love ❤️ to raise Chickens and Pegeons.. even Turkeys if I had. She is very obedient.
You made a very good point, Paul. It is very important to know your birds or other animals you have, since you then know what they are capable of or not. And that's a huge benefit over a factory-like farm where animals are just numbers.
They have to know you as well, if they don't trust you they will not let you handle them and sure not going to be happy about being moved.
Kkkkkkkkkkkkkk kkkkkkkkkkkkkk
Never seen that before! A broody chicken will peck the hell out of your hand if you pick her up, so maybe the key is use a turkey. An incubator might be the best idea with all those eggs you're producing.
I have the incubator full of eggs now, they're just starting to hatch, I use both methods.
All birds are individuals and their behaviour when broody is based on their experience. A broody hen will peck you if one, she does not trust you and/or two, if she has experienced an attack on her eggs from a predator. She will also not trust you if you have previously stopped her from sitting and have taken eggs away from her before. This turkey sits because she trusts the keeper and she will make a much better mother than an incubator and a heap lamp ever can. All the very best, Pavlovafowl aka Sue
My free range birds will peck the heck out of your hands if you reach into their nest...that's a fact!
JungleJoelVideos , clearly the guy knows what he's doing because it's working so to try and tell him that he should use an incubator or a different kind of bird is a bit ridiculous considering the guy is showing a video of what works for him
Pretty judgemental of the guy, frankly.
I too have a broody turkey and was planning on putting chicks under her. Are turkeys good mothers? She was raised by a hen herself. Glad to see other people are crazy like me too.
lol, it's only crazy if it doesn't work...
Henry Castro-Miller do you sell turkey eggs to hatch Henry
Efrain Sanchez No we don't sorry. She was the only one that survived thanksgiving 😬😬
i wouldnt call it crazy a lot lot people do this
awesome,it's cool how they will raise chickens from another bird
They like eggs, don't really care where they came from.
BuddhaisNepalese Even more so
She sure knows her job.
She surely does and is very good at it.
Dale Calder í only have 4 male turkeys and 57 chicks trying to find a female turkey :T
mother's nature
lifeinthailand just curious. I read that the animals are for personal use. My question, do you have a big family to have so many chickens? Just curious. You sir are a very kind good man as well. Thanks for the video.
Dale Calder ekjffmxxmkyd
I’ve a Tom turkey he’s fourteen years old and still Dancing about. Not covering any off the hens but still great old bird and I don’t know how long turkeys live.
I really enjoyed this video and really enjoyed your pens, very protective. Safety for the babies with tiny wire. Very Good. Well done!
Thank you, glad you liked the video.
hello friend this is lovely video love the turkey very nice she is a good mother 13 eggs amazing animals 40 minutes finally she sits love those ducks love the water very nice video totally enjoyed
Thank you, she has always been an awesome mom.
what a pretty girl. one of my hens just hatched out 2 ducklings.
Cool.
Your turkey hen was staking her territory and claiming her eggs to the whole community of birds. You have a wonderful hen. tfs
It takes them a few minutes to relax after being moved, she has done this a lot so I was not real concerned, it doesn't always work though.
Good vid,it must be a built in mothering instinct with them.
Bourbon Reds are great Mamas and are very "human social" ! Mine have hatched many babies as well.. I really like the nesting pen you have for her.
I built it for quail but works well for this too.
Turkeys always pick the oddest places to nest, at least mine do. The chickens generally either just go broody in the nesting box itself, or pick a place very close to where the flock gathers for the night. My turkeys always pick odd places all over the yard and barn.
Yes they do....
She is a beautiful Cocona! Is she the Bourbon red breed? Love the way she chirps, an uncle here said it sounds like 'peor', which in english is 'worse',....you ask my uncle how he is and he replies, peor, peor, peor like the cocona! Will ya look at that crazy muscovy, enjoying him/herself in the water? Hopefully he shared the water with his companions!
She is part bourbon red for sure but she should be darker, turkeys around here seem to be a mix of everything, you never know what you're going to get.
My old grandma that lived in a village had to brood chickens because at those times, the were no incubators and ordering chicks.
She would take a crate, just a little bigger then a chicken she will put in to sit on the eggs. Then she would put like 1/3 of the crate with straw or hay. Lay bunch of fresh eggs she determined will most likely hatch and then put a chicken on them. Most chickens would't sit and would walk away but then, she covers the top of crate with some netting, add weigh and drop her food every day. She store them in some dark place, and give water and food for as long as she didn't hear baby chicks sounds. After hatching, she let's them out and observe, if chicken is not become mother to look after small chicks, and seems like walking away from them, then my grandma would tie a rope over chickens leg and the other end for some stone or something hard. That way, chicks will be around her, safe and after they turn 1 month old, they can be more independent and mom is not needed so they let it go where she wants
Normally if you can get a bird to stay on the eggs then there good to go, but once I did have a chicken abandon here newly hatched babies.
That bunch of noise is her calling out to the eggs true mother, notifying others that they seem to be abandoned, for them to be claimed.. :D
True.
Mine doesn't wanna met, how/what do I do to meet this?
hi just some unsolicited help. do chickens at night. so around maybe 7:30 or 8 when its getting dark out go put the eggs in a place and the chicken on then and put some food by the side as well. ive done it a few times and it works really well around that time
also thanks for the advice. just tried it myself and am waiting to see if she’ll accept
Agree, always best to move birds after dark, not east to make a video then, the light makes them crazy. Good luck.
lifeinthailand sorry she’s still not sat on them i added food and water in with her but still standing
Are you sure she is broody, when a chicken is broody it is normally had to get them to stand up.
lifeinthailand oh it seems i need to do more research. thank you sir
Que bela ninhada
lol turkeys go to sleep early? I can just imagine them fuming at the chickens to stfu lol
lol
You are surprisingly really entertaining to watch as well as educational 😳😳😳😳 you earnt a subscriber
Glad you like the video and thanks for subscribing.
shes such a beautiful color
And an amazing mom.
Moved our turkey's nest while she was up getting food and water, her and a bantam hen were working together to incubate a nest, we moved them to a safe location. The chicken wanted nothing to do with this new spot, but when the turkey came up to me, I put her in and she accepted it immediately. Her nickname is "Mama." So far, she's the only bird we have that has successfully raised a baby to adulthood, though we have only tried with two birds, and her baby was a Lavender Guinea Fowl. Now she has three baby turkeys that she is currently raising, along with a nest of eggs that are due to hatch within the week. One of our muscovies has two baby ducks right now too, she had hatched a baby turkey but didn't want to accept it so we gave it to the turkey and kept a watch on her and she accepted the new baby, she truly is a good mama.
Most turkeys in my experience are god mom's but not all. They're much easier to deal with than chickens that is for sure.
When I had my live stream tonight. I mention your channel when I came across this video. Before I watched it. I told everyone about your old turkey and what you do. Isn't it weird how much I know. And we never met before. lol
lol, you know me better than I know me....
lol When people are interesting to me. I take notes. lol
This is so cute
Hey there. Good video., been helpful.
Does turkey nead to be in mood for sitting on eggs or she gets mood when she seeas bunch of them?
Excellent vid mate. The Quail are still sitting one on 15 eggs... With what you said about separating them got it i have an extra cage ;-) I will put them in that next time they go broody. I have to say they tried and still are 24 days.. Need to get them off the eggs or they might die trying. Just had a thought I might get them to sit some turkey eggs lol that would be a first ;-)
Turkey eggs sound like a good idea, they could sit on 1 each...lol
Orales me recuerda a mi rancho
Coturnix quail male crows in background- my pet quail responds. lol.
lol, too funny.
that's really cute. where did you get the eggs?
From my chickens.
Wow really cute .where did you get i also need this egg
how sweet
lol, thanks.
I think she liked her other spot because she had privacy.
That "Turken" is like a Gigantoraptor !! Maybe a Maiasaura!!
lol
you have the best channel!
Thank you, glad you like it.
Good mother
She sure was, she is retired now.
🦃
big momma of the year
She has been the mom of the year for the last 5 years....lol
u should set up a kiddie pool for the ducks and stuff so they can swim and cool off. I think that would be great for them since it's so hot
There are problems with that, #1 is space, I don't have any, but #2 is the big one, it would have to be cleaned out every day, that is a lot of work and a very dirty job.
+lifeinthailand ya def didn't think of that. so what do u do with all of these birds? are they ur pets or food? :-(
I raise animals for food.
beatyful mom
Yes indeed.
YOU don't convince her, her HORMONES convince her.
lol
Woah she is purdy
Sure is.
Look at all those eggs!
lol
She is like “Mine B*tch”
lol
Great video !!! what type of turkey is this thanks.
My turkeys are a mixed breed, never know what there going to look like.
I tried like hell to put Prairie Chicken eggs under a broody hen this spring but was unsuccessful
That would have been interesting if it worked.
Wonder if she's asking the other turkeys if they own that nest before she adopts it.
Yes, that is probably what is going on, but a broody turkey or chicken well happily steal eggs if they get the chance too.
excellent video! I learn a lot from your channel. Thanks! (I hope your momma gets a treat once in a while)
Her reward is she gets to stay in her pen on Thanksgiving ;)
Very funny!
Freshly caught grasshoppers, earthworms and other yummy bugs! :)
I sing to her late at night before she goes to sleep, helps her relax.
@life, ahhh, that's what you meant when you said "spend time with your animals" . I think that is the sweetest thing I've heard on youtube ever! I have been with you since you did a video on the bad roof job when you were building your house and I have really enjoyed learning and being entertained. Thank you for sharing your life with us.
I have a male and female turkey.. she laying in there cage, but she's not sitting on the eggs, eventually she or the big male breaks it. I let her out to find somewhere she might like around. She come back in the cage, lays another and don't sit on it.. help!
how long do turkey live for?
I have no idea actually.
Just check the web, I guess about 6-9 years but idk
Close to 10 years
Very beutiful.
Thanks.
I have a very unique situation where I have a turkey AND a duck laying on the same eggs consisting of both turkey and duck eggs. Kind of curious as to what happens when they hatch.
Hopefully, they all hatch around the same time.
that is amazing!
Thanks.
I have a turkey question. We have a turkey hen that is currently nesting on 14 eggs. Our male turkey is so large that were not sure if the eggs are fertile. My question is it normal for turkey hens to leave her nest at times? This is my first round raising turkeys.
In my experience all moms are different and they do it there way, but most rarely leave there nest. You can candle the eggs to see if anything is happening, but turkey eggs are harder to see through than chicken eggs. And it is very stressful for the mom.
Did a turkey hatch their eggs? I have two turkey who share nest at a time and i don't know if they will hatch the egg.its my first time..hope can get some advice from you
🐤🦃
Now I got my anwser to a question I asked in another video 555 thanks. Even if u did not know this when u made this video 555.
lol
How do u best predator proof your coop? I am in Canada, and lost two chickens last week to a mink getting in through a rat hole that chewed into I threw the floor.
In through the floor*
Sorry about that, these are predators I do not have, I know chicken wire will not stop them, you need something a little thicker gauge.
Good luck.
Where does she eat and drink?
I added water after she relaxed, no point putting it right away, she will just knock it over.
Mary Jo Mercer
They can eat bugs and grass, so if she was hungry, she could find something on her own but I'm sure they fed her.
Nice! What else do you have? Where is your farm at? Do you sell them?
I have lots of stuff, but it is just in my yard, not a farm. We don't sell anything.
🐣🦃
Hello, I had a question about turkeys since you own some. I have 3 turkeys, theyre about 7 weeks old, but they have a hard time walking and they can’t really stand up. Theyre legs look twisted almost. Any advice? Theyre still eating and drinking. Thanks
That don't sound good, leg problems are not easy to fix, maybe not fixable at all.
They all have the same problem?
My turkeys like to sit on the chicken eggs and the chickens like to sit on the turkey eggs
Yell they don't care who laid the egg.
I've got a friend who's turkey went broody and hatched out 12/17 chicken eggs but noticed most of them were flattened... is this a normal problem? I told them to separate them for now just in cause but i feel like this shouldnt be a problem... anyways great video and gorgeous bird!
Not a normal problem but a few years ago I did have a turkey that would kill her babies like that, and they were baby turkeys, it was just a bad mom, most are really good.
My guinea just screams and attacked me
Am i the only unlucky one here?
That is why I don't have guineas any more, hard to control and they make so much noise.
Any advice on how to snap a hen out of being broody?
No, lol, as far as I am concerned there is no way to do it. She will get over it when she is tired of being broody, for some that is a long time, for others, it is only a few days without eggs.
thanks
No problem.
Beautiful!!! 😍😍😍
Thank you.
Quick question. Do birds ever eat eggs from a different bird species?
Yes, but normally only if the egg is cracked or broken.
Wow very nice 🇧🇩🇧🇩🇧🇩
Thanks
CUTE TURKEY,CUTE NATURAL HABBITATE OF NESTING AND CUTE YOU ;)
Thank you.
Very attractive and spectacular
Thank you.
Birdies.
Got a few.
lifeinthailand: haha
Buiteful
Thanks
You should try goose eggs next.
That would be cool but I do not want geese, way too loud for this close to the house.
the walking and sqauwking means shes asking if the eggs belong to the other birds when they are unclaimed she then takes them and now they are hers ,,,do you feed them the same food
Makes sense, I feed all my birds chicken food.
sinjin gideon 0زنجججججححجچ0جك
Does it work the same with putting chicken eggs under a muscovy duck?
Yes, but I have found it is hard to move a duck, if you add eggs to her chosen nest she well set on them though.
Wow
Cool 😎 video
Thanks.
The wild turkeys here lay ad many as 22 eggs.
I had one turkey lay an egg every day for over a year.
Wow now that’s impressive! That hen put in alot of work!
Clever
lol, most time it works....
Nice.
Thanks.
Why do the chicks just run away like that? And does the turkey mom go fetch them?
Mom has to make a decision, if she goes with the first baby then she gives up on the rest, can't be in 2 places at once, that is why it is best to not let that happen.
good morning and nice big mama
lol, she is an awesome mom.
Do turkeys lay eggs like chicken or less/ more
They are more like wild birds, they lay in batches of 12 to 18 eggs at a time, then sit the eggs, raise the young and do it all over again.
i have this problem with my turkeys .....they totally refuse to sit on their eggs.....
Maybe they're not broody, only birds that are broody well sit on eggs, they have to want to do it. Maybe they have not finished laying their eggs yet, or they laid them and decided they don't want to be a mom.
I'm sorry Paul that happened to you thief's all your videos great y 4 all your hard work
Thank you.
2:28 the pot is way too small get something bigger like a kittie pool
Oh I see.
what kind off feed you use ?
use chicken egg layer, 17% protein, higher protein would be better for turkeys but this is what I can get.
You need to pet her everyday to make her more relaxed. Come on sense right?
Not really, its a turkey not a kitten.
