  • Can you live in 400 square feet or less? More people are and tiny houses are being seen in many communities.
Originally from Iowa, he moved to Kernersville NC in 1995. His passion for living a simpler life and creating sustainable structures began as a child building tree houses and living in an abandoned underground fresh war reservoir as a curious teenager. In 1979 he built award-winning Passive Solar Earth Sheltered Housing, now commonly know as Green Roofs. He is a leader in the “Tiny House” movement and works to both demonstrate the benefits of smaller living and to change zoning and other barriers to infill and new construction of small homes.

Great quote: "Nothing is worth having, that isn't worth sharing" -- John Williams.

Thank you!! Will work on presenting this to my community. The city planners are working to developing large areas here in Kristiansand, Norway. But average house prices are to high for most people. However, they have to build some more reasonable priced homes and here is an opportunity to work for what you call tiny house community to be a reality. I believe in the idea that families want neighbourhoods, more like a village, where kids can roam free because there are adults present. And older folks could also benefit. Time is coming for the wealty post war generation to retire and they would afford a tiny house and be able to live in (snow free) southern Europe during winter like hundred thousand of North Europeans, snowbirds. Your talk has inspired me to see a bigger picture. This movement will benefit all. Thanks so much

I really like the idea of a tiny house. Though I have lived in a small apartment.. and it really gets your head when you are often moving things to do other things. And even when not. To brign anything new to your flat starts a game of puzzle. So maybe planning here is key. And I don't think this is as much of an answer to a family with kids. Like someone else said 80-150m2 (800-1600 sq ft) for a family is optimal. But I could see myself living in a tiny house when the kids have moved to their own. But definitely not in a community. I'd picture myself in a small cabin in the woods.

The best answer is 12 foot high side walls with the truss giving one a twenty foot high ceiling in the center of the living room. Then a sleeping loft over the kitchen, bathroom and tthe one bedroom (1 1/2 baths)

JW...The shower of pain misses few of us.
Now...a thought i, to me, "TINY" is sort of an unfortunate term. I am not creative enough to come up with a substitute but ...Adequate Size is an idea whose time has come for many. As an example, my home is around 2,000 SF and I use about 1/3 of the available space. Even some of that is just accumulated stuff sitting around. I could live in 800 SF with a 400 SF car / storage barn easily.

Can I ask why you don't move into the smaller home then? I live in a small one bed apartment after a 2200 sq ft home and this is way better. Less bills, less time on upkeep, more time and money for travelling and for spending with my family :)

each his to own... Interesting video, but I just don't see the need to be so extreme. I don't need a mansion nor a matchbox to live in . 800 -1600 sq ft house is fine for me.
