- Comino is the smallest island in the Maltese Archipelago. While the island of Malta is one of the world's most densely populated territories, Comino could hardly be more sparsely populated. It now has just four permanent residents. They are two brothers, Salvu and Angelu, their aunt and a cousin. Salvu races in his Jeep across the little island and monitors the water supply. He never leaves Comino except for health reasons or to get spare parts. A priest visits them regularly to celebrate mass for the mini-community. And tourists come here by boat from Malta during the summer. Salvu likes having a chat with them, but is happy when they go back, so that he can get on with his work in peace.
my great grandfather used to own comino as a farming island decades ago. My mother spent every summer there as a child, living in the abandoned exile hospital turned holiday home/ hunting lodge. I live in England now but to this day i make it a point to spend a few weeks a year on comino. A magical little island with lots of hidden treasures. Salvu is a true legend!
Hi Steph, I would like to go, this summer, to Comino. Will love to meet Salvu! Can you tell me more about the island?
My father, together with his family, used to live on Comino for around 7 years when he was young, back in the late 50's and early 60's.
What a great life! Salvu is inspiring to me.
I just revisited Comino after 50 years.I was 25 when I first arrived there on a stormy night via the ferry from Marfa. My trio LES SANS NOM was asked to play 2 summer seasons (vis Mr Joe Secluna) by Monsier Levallier, the first owner of Hotel Comino.
Many celebrities were staying there to evade the general public.David Selznick film guy,Connie Stevens and Patrick McNee ,a young Michael Heseltine, etc. It was via the cruise director of the Andes in 1969 that we were headhunted to perform on transatlantic QE2 which was new and most prestigious ship!
Although I was pleased to revisit,it was slightly distressing to see the commercial spoiling of natural beauty at Blue Lagoon with hot dog stands and deck chairs etc, also the old Maltese buildings in Sleima replaced by high Rise, Nevertheless,my memories of my youth came flooding back, including the lovely Maltese singer Mary Spiteri, whose Cd I found at Amato record shop in Valletta.
Oh to recapture it all !!!
Comino, my favorit place in Malta! Won't ever forget the beautiful runs that I took to Comino Tower.
Great stay at the hotel, too.
