- Developed and published by Taito in 1987
The original Japan version of Rastan is pretty much the same as the worldwide release, save for the inclusion of an introduction screen when starting the game, which includes some of Rastan's backstory. I'm not sure why this was removed from other versions, especially when it was written in English, and only delays the action by a few seconds. It makes for a more complete experience, so when creating a QHD longplay it made sense to play this version instead.

@@mongolballempire8664 Oh, I also like Golden Axe. The overall worldview feels like a good fit for Conan the Barbarian. But I feel it lacks a bit of savagery
@@dangsam yeah you are right. Goldenaxe 1 feels like conan to me (with the beheading in the japanese intro), but the second arcade game misses the savagery. However check out Rastan Saga Warrior Blade 3, now THAT is conan.

I like at the end of round 4 when Rastan just says "I wish I hadn't bothered, but I'm committed now."

But the contract was made, signed and verified, so to speak. One dragon’s head for loads of wealth. So now Rastan needed to make good on his end.
Along with Conan magazines reading this is one of the most thrilling experiences i had as a kid

Miracle Rastan
Its one of the greatest arcade games of all time. Everything is incredible. Pity the second game was terrible. The third game should have been the true sequel. I wonder if this could have been fantastic on modern consoles?

Man this brings back memories. One of my all time favorite arcade games. You could play a long time on one quarter too. I recall making it to level 5 or 6 most of the time, but having a really hard time finishing level 6. I remember taking a lot more damage from the the acid and the poison though. It barely moved your health bar when you encountered these things. Well it was a LONG time ago.
Late 80s -- reading Conan stories and comics, playing Conan games on microcomputers...Rastan was the best arcade Conan game.
When that one sound track is so good, so you can reuse it for every stage, and it still get away with an awesome work.
Classic game. I don't think I ever even made it to the first boss as a kid. This video made it look so easy. haha

I still remember in my childhood playing this game first at a VHS Rental Store because my late father was renting movies and later my late uncle took the entire family to Las Vegas and played Rastan at Circus Circus great times.
I like the Japanese version better. They flesh out the story more, you hear Rastan's lines and motivations. The US version just has stock dialogue. Just like the PC Engine version of "Double Dragon II: The Revenge" has original computer animation voiced by talented voice actors to flesh out the story (NintendoComplete did a playthrough of it that he also subtitled for those of us who don't know Japanese).
I agree, the Japanese version is much better than the US version.
@@mrmusicverse It was said Conan inspired Rastan Saga. With the extra scenes framing the story, it's easy to see why. You actually get to be in Rastan's shoes as you experience his story through gameplay.
That 1st stage track is one the most epic tracks ever in an arcade along with the sound effect....oohhooooooooo🎵🎶

I owned the full size arcade game of this years ago. Was a hard game, never did beat it.

AL82 , can you explain all of the power ups and how to use them? The different swords are obvious and the blue life and orange life killer is also obvious but I dont understand the rest of them..
The attract mode explains them. Most of the pickups are either temporary damage reduction or points multipliers. The ram's head (or golden fleece as the game calls it) is a full HP restore. The gems are just points. Not really sure what the staff does even the attract mode just says "?" for the description.
Easily the best side scrolling hack and slash of its day hands down!

I played this was one of my 1st arcade game cabinets at 7yrs old in BkNy,hard game so I used to watch an older Asian cat kick this game in the ass aswell as other arcades in other rollgate stores all over Brooklyn.
Played this arcade game until I broke the bank in the late 80s. A wonderful game, quite difficult actually, but awesome in many ways. Seen some people complete the game in one token (quarter), but have never seen it done without losing a life. That would be quite the feat.

Was this game ever released on consoles? The early stage song sounds very familiar and I never played this game on arcades.

Other ports include the Game Gear and Apple IIGS ones
Almost for sure they wanted to make Conan the Barbarian clone, but they didn't get licence (for cheap), so they renamed it, and changed a little (adding magic, etc...)

Back when Arnold Schwarzenegger was fearless in being that tough, masculine, alpha male, that we usually find active in sports.
The greatest treasure in life is a good woman, or so says The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 31, anyway. Also, Rastan should have realized that having that princess along with the treasure not only would have made him a king of her country, but that he could have also added her country to the one that he became a king of, thus giving him more land, as well as people and resources, to rule over in the end because a smart king would have seen the potential of the bigger picture, and bonus points if the princess is beautiful. All good kings need a queen to rule beside them in their lives.

Always called this game Conan.
Well, I can say two things for certain about this game.
1. It's so nostalgic and evokes the heroic element we were so enjoying in the 80s... Now everything is grimdark and boring. And men are not allowed to be competent any more.
2. It has some of the most horrific game design I have ever seen. It is obvious that there was little thought put in the design and challenge aspect here. No particular consistency in the universe either(random barbarian women with lizardmen and baby chimeras?!?).

I had the DOS port of this game. Worse graphics and sound than the original, and there were a few places where the enemies would spawn so fast and thick that there was effectively no way to actually get past them.
Oh, this brings back memories of this being a shit game.
Hired it for a weekend with SMS2 and ended up playing the built-in Alex the Kid.
I really want Warrior Blade - Rastan Saga Part 3 (its so Conan). I hope they will ever release it beside the horrible expensive japanese exclusive taito memories ps2 version. Arcade archives still hasnt the rastan games, why is that? Does anyone know?

A friend of mine was like "I used to love Conan at the arcade." I was so confused cuz I knew there was no Conan game. I told him, "you mean this one.... Rastan Saga?" His mind was blown 😂
