  • Use of finite element mesh in a structural model is very common. From modelling a slab/floor diaphragm, shear wall, foundation to silo, clarifier or culvert - plate element is used in almost all types of structural model.
In this entire video series on plate mesh generation, I will discuss about different mesh generation approaches and how we can model a plate mesh properly in STAAD following correct procedure. In the first part, I have covered the basic plate generation options available in STAAD, like plate grid or Infill panel option and discussed about few common plate connectivity problems and how to fix those issues.

What a lecture..I am only half way into this video and I can't wait to comment and say thank you. This made my year...I love it when I get to watch and listen to people like you. Thank u.❤

Nice explanation Suro, Please add the below points in the next session
    1. what is the optimized plate size in large structures
    2. Plate reference and changes in results
    3. Plate mat or elastic mat definitions for raft foundation
    4. global vs local stress results

Thanks for your suggestions, Ganesh. Yes, I will cover most of these modeling topics in this series. Plate and solid results interpretation will be covered in a new series.

Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude for your informative video. Now, I have a question regarding parametric modeling. When plates are not generated orthogonally, how do we determine the moment along the orthogonal direction in order to calculate the required reinforcement for a slab or wall?

You can use Results along a line feature (postprocessing mode > Layouts > Plate) to resolve the results along a defined line.

Thank you so very much for this very informative tutorial. 🙏 Is there any tutorial specifically for modelling and analysing shear walls of an RCC multistorey building? I will be very grateful if you could point to a tutorial or guide which teaches on how to model and analyse shear walls.

How to model a shear wall properly in STAAD which can be further used for analysis and design, that will be covered in the 5th part of this series. I will try to upload this soon, stay tuned.

    Nice video,
Now, we can not view the bending moment of the whole beam since it is divided. How to overcome this issue?

You can select those segmented members, create a physical member using Form member option and use the physical member cursor to select and view the BMD.

Sir can you please model one building with basement and flat slab.

Thanks for you suggestions. I will cover the flat slab modelling techniques in 3rd part using advanced mesh generator, design using integrated modules will be covered later as that will take longer duration. I will try to cover basement wall modelling in future. Keep watching.
