    I rented a single six from my local gun range, had to shoot their ammo with their gun. I own a wrangler, shot their ammo to keep it fair, and did my own comparison. Single six is a great firearm, however, a wrangler isn't to be overlooked imo.

    • @bigbill2444
      @bigbill2444 Před 8 měsíci +1

      Having to use the range's ammo on their rentals is a common thing, and for good reason; while it doesn't matter so much with rimfire, the range doesn't want people using handloads with their rentals, for reasons that should be obvious.
      A range I frequent had an M1A ruined when someone snuck in some handloads, and one blew up.

    the Wrangler has a steal barrel ! I have 2 of the black ones and a 1976 super single 6 made in the 200th year of American Liberty. Love all 3 of them. You need more practice with them and less wind. On a windy day you can shoot around corners with a 22. LOL Lay the Wrangler flat in your left hand and rotate the cylinder with your thumb while you load it with your right. Take empties out the same way-much faster.

    GREAT video! I really aappreciate how you took the time to do diff ammo and at diff ranges.
    My older brother has a mid '60's single Six with both cylinders (.22lr and .22 magnum). He got it as a gift from dad as a high school graduation gift (seven years later I got a Bulova watch for my grad gift - go figure).
    So (still jealous) now I'm in my very early '70's and went to one of the big store gunshops (starts with a C) and checked out their "Library" of used guns. They had a few of the single six's but none of the convertible ones had both cylinders. I looked at the Wranglers and thought immediately that they looked cheaply made, and yes they had a low affordable price, but not for me. The next day I went to one of my local gunstores and found a pristine single six (New Model) with both cylinders, I bought it on the spot for $600.
    I think this one has the best of both worlds. Not a three screw model, but still the fit and finish of the one my brother has.
    I'll be picking it up this next Tuesday, and can't wait to try it out.

    You've got bad info on what these guns are made of.
    The Single Six does have a steel frame, cylinder, barrel and lockwork. The ejector rod housing is aluminum. The grip frame is aluminum.
    On the wrangler, the cylinder, barrel and lockwork is steel, while the cylinder frame is an aluminum alloy, not Zamak, while thr grip frame IS Zamak.

    The old model Single Six hasn't been in production for 50 years. You never carry 6 rounds in the cylinder of an old model. Load one, skip one, then load the remaining four. Bring the hammer to full cock and lower it on the empty chamber. A better comparison would be a new model Single Six and the Wrangler. The Wrangler is far from junk. It is built using less expensive manufacturing processes and materials. Ruger needed a product to compete at the lower price point. And the Wrangler fills the gap nicely!

    • @rifleman17hmrshooter
      @rifleman17hmrshooter  Před rokem +4

      That's a fair point, the new model single six is a lot closer to the Wrangler mechanically. Not to say the Wrangler is crap, it's just a proof point that cheaper manufacturing really does take away quality. Now it is still a shooter for sure, but I'll take the single six over the Wrangler. I've found when it comes to a lot of guns, sometimes older is much better than newer.

      @@rifleman17hmrshooter the barrel bore diameter is not the proper size to shoot .22 MAGNUM ammunition accurately in the Ruger Single 6 rimfire revolver for use with .22 MAGNUM conversion cylinder, because the bore diameter is .219" inches. To shoot .22 MAGNUM rimfire ammunition accurately the bore diameter must be .223" inches !

    • @bigbill2444
      @bigbill2444 Před 8 měsíci +5

      @@unitedstatesirie7431 I think if you check that with Ruger you'll find the bore is .224; their reasoning is that it's safer to shoot a bullet through a larger bore than a too small one.

    For future videos,
    1. I would suggest going to the bench FIRST and try out several types of ammo. Then shoot with what the gun likes.
    2. Keep your targets separate for comparison later. Paper plate with orange dot is cheap and functional at the range you are shooting. (OR take parts of your video and put them at the end so we can quickly compare)
    3. You may want to take a Bullseye stance when shooting one handed for group.

    Using the same rest in the above video at 25m the 6" gun will shoot groups of 65mm, the 9" gun slightly better, around 50mm.

As of yesterday RUGER announced the NEW Super Wrangler with (2) cylinders 22LR/22WMR combo, a 5.5" barrel and adjustable sights for $329 list. which is about 1/3rd of the price of what a Single Ten is going for.

    Nice old Single Six you have, and good comparison, but could do with some corrections: contrary to what you said, it has never been considered safe to load six rounds in an old model Single Six; You point to the barrel of the Wrangler and call it "Pot metal" - it's made of steel. And, to be slightly pedantic, "Keyholing" is not when the a bullet hits the same hole in a target, it's when an unstabilized bullet hits the target sideways.

    If anyone is interested the Weaver rails were glued to the frame or barrel using epoxy. Before glueing both surfaces were cleaned with acetone.
    After the glue cured the sights were mounted being careful not to stress the rails and the glued joints.
    The advantage of epoxy is that it can be softened with a hot air gun and removed.

    I believe if you send an older one to Ruger, they will install a transfer bar safety.
    I have a newer model Ruger Super Single Six (I bought it brand new in 1999). It's built just as rugged at the old ones.
    The Wranglers are built with cheaper materials to keep the cost down. That why they cost around $329, and a new Super Single Six will cost up almost $800. They're still building the Super Single Six just as rugged and refined as always.

    • @bigbill2444

      I'm not sure what you mean by a New Model Super Single Six. I'm not familiar with a Super Single Six made in the New Model line.
      I have a three-screw Super Single Six; what set it apart from the regular Single Six is the adjustable rear sight (the regular Single Six has a dove-tail rear sight).
      There are Single Sixes available in the New Model line in the Flat top design (still with adjustable sights), but they are Lipsey's exclusives, and are in .32 H&R caliber only. Otherwise, all Single Sixes have adjustable rear sights.
      The new Super Wrangler has a MSR price of $329, but the Wrangler lists at $269 for most models. Some are higher.

      @bigbill2444 Před 8 měsíci +1

      The Super Single Six is an old model designation; the regular Old Model Single Sixes had a dovetailed rear sight, while the Super Single Sixes have an adjustable rear sight (I have one, made in 1973).
      If you look enough, you'll find Wranglers online for under $180 easily (of course, you add shipping, tax, and the receiving FFL's transfer charge, but that shouldn't make the whole shebang over about $220).
      Now, if you are talking about the Super Wrangler, you can find them for about $225, plus, plus, plus.

    Very Good video. One handed is more accurate, with revolvers AND semi-automatics because your sight picture is LONGER. Standing sideways to your target (actually 75 to 80 degrees is the most natural and best) with your arm extended is much longer than facing your target with both hands meeting in the middle which is less than your arm length. Shooting two handed, facing your target, is a defensive handgun technique. Less accurate but better for that purpose.
    Also, in my opinion, when shooting any firearm from a rest it is best NOT to rest the barrel of the gun on the rest. Support the gun with your hand and heal of the pistol on the rest so the rest does not effect the shot. With a rifle the forearm of the gun's stock is on the rest, not the barrel. And it should not be at the tip or end of the stock but closer to, and just in front of, the rifle's balance point. NRA competition bullseye for pistols, revolvers and semi-automatics, is shot at 50 feet. 15 yards/45 feet is close to that. In my opinion both are a good range to judge a pistol's accuracy, like 100 yards is a good range to judge a rifle's accuracy. 7 and 12 yards are more of self defense pistol distances. When shooting for fun any distance you like is best.

      It's the sight radius you may be thinking of, and that's dependent on the distance between the front and rear sights, not on your stance. On handguns, the longer sight radius is usually a factor of barrel length; the longer the barrel, the greater the sight radius.
      And you're off on the rest, too. It's the frame that should be on the rest, not the heel of the grip frame.

      I don't like the guy because he's very disrespectful to viewers. The whole fake operator thing is lame, but I especially don't like it when a creator craps on his audience

    Single six is a decent gun, stainless version made of all steel is a good gun.
    Pot metal Wrangler is no better than Heritage Rough rider, cheap trash.

    I have the wrangler. Not the most accurate gun. But it's fun to plink around with
