  • Terry McDermott was a spectacular midfield player who graced the Kop and scored arguably the best goal ever seen at Anfield during the 7-0 win over Tottenham at Anfield in 1978.
In four seasons when he was at his peak, he contributed nearly 50 league goals as well as many more vital strikes in cup competitions. He became a regular member of the England squad and was capped 25 times. Even in 1981-82 as he passed his 30th birthday and when his position in the side was being seriously challenged by younger men, he recorded his highest total of league goals in a single season for Liverpool, 14 from only 29 appearances.
His long-range shooting became a feature of his game to add to his vision and tactical awareness and his chip in the replayed FA Cup semi-final with Everton in 1977 was voted 'Goal of the Season' by the BBC.

2 feet, vision, long range, short range, rockets, deft chips, aerial brilliance, he for me, was the greatest midfielder of the 70s.

I remember seeing him bevvied in a pub in Maghull a few years back, I went over cos he was one of my heroes and he was on his own, I asked him what the best goal he ever scored was, he told me to buy him a pint of bitter and he would tell me, I was expecting one of the spurs goals or the semi against Everton ! But unbelievably he said it was against borussia moenchengladbach in a pre season friendly in 1979, these were his words 'I was standing in the centre circle when there keeper took a goal kick & I volleyed it straight back over his head and right in the too corner, I knew then lads I could never beat that ' great bloke !

Jeez Terry Mac….he could do anything (maybe not the greatest in the tackle) and I miss the days when all our midfield returned double figures season in season out. That couple of seasons from 1977-81 and in particular 1979-1980 team will never be bettered IMO. We had midfielders that could have played any position . Paisley moving Kennedy left was a master stroke . It enabled the rest of the team to drive forward. Not only that , we were absolutely formidable at the back. Phil Neal was a total machine…never saw him have a bad game. How blessed we have been seeing football like this in our time . A wonderful video . Thank you YNWA

Ahh sad news he’s got dementia!
Ray Kennedy sort of went the same way…
‘I think’ the done some brain tests on 60’s,70’s footballers brains and it was concluded the weight of those old leather ‘Casey’ footballs, especially when wet, was like heading a medicine ball…
Like you I got tears watching him.
Kennedy, Souness, Terry and Highway was by far our best midfield ever…

Around this time I fell in love with LFC - great players like Dalglish, McDermott, Souness, Heighway. Also that kit with the white V neck, the classic Liverpool kit, there's something magical about it, so distinctive and unlike what other teams had. Wish Nike could bring it back instead of the dreadful stuff they make today

Terry Mac was a great player who scored great goals (the Everton one, the one against Spurs and for me his best one playing away at Aberdeen in the European Cup), he was a great passer, had two great feet and was one of the fittest footballers I have ever seen - he covered some ground! And don't forget his never-say-die attitude. In addition to all that he won both player of the year awards and won at least one goal of the season award. This man would could get into the current Liverpool midfield without a shadow of doubt in my opinion.

Re. The 7v0 win against Spurs in 1978. Unfortunately the camera footage does not show that the break came from a Spurs corner and that Terry Mac was the last player out of the box. I watched it unfold standing in the middle of the Kop. I held my breath from the moment Johnson passed to Heighway, just willing Terry Mac to get there. Well played Johnson and Heighway.

the opening goal in Rome 77... I shot up off the settee with arms aloft & put my right hand straight through a glass lamp shade on the ceiling. Cut my hand and sent the rest of it down onto my Grandad's head. Both of us bleeding, we just laughed and cheered Terry Mac. We spent the rest of the game cheering-on the reds wearing plasters on our wounds. A few months later, he & Jimmy Case were at the Cannon & Ball show at the Southport Theatre - sat right in front of us!! Autographs all round - don't mind if we do. Great memories...
