  • In 1926, the Miami economy was soaring, fueled by wealthy northerners attracted to the tropical climate and beaches. But a devastating hurricane would smash into the city, causing widespread destruction.

Amazing quality footage for its age. The 1926 hurricane was considered the big one before the 1992 Andrew. Love to see the whole documentary.

The 1900 storm was the deadliest hurricane on record. It killed thousands of people.

Deadliest in the USA, that is. Not internationally - not by a long shot.

I'm annoyed that there's no acknowledgement that this footage has been artificially colorized.

Colorized. There was no full-spectrum color system available in 1926. Technicolor’s earliest full-color tech first appeared in the early 1930s, and Kodachrome wasn’t perfected until 1935. Any films you might see from the 1920s or earlier in full color must have been artificially colorized.

$109 million in 1926 is worth $1.8 billion today. Not $165 billion. Inflation averaged 2.94 percent for the period.
