People will complain about Roberta's injuries, but she goes up against a special forces unit with a centuries-old musket. It's a miracle she's alive.
Yeah people like her usually don't survive. She went through hell and was able to walk out of it alive. Bottom line she got really lucky.

It’s heartbreaking that she hardly will smile ever again, after such traumatic and bloody life, but just to know Diego and the rest of Lovelace people will lend her a hand, makes my heart melt.
Her hallucinations (aka her consciousness) told her that she could have moved on from her past if she remained at the Lovelace manor. And Garcia also loves her romantically, so she will have even more of a reason to smile once he gets older.

I am impressed by the fanbase that this anime still has despite being an anime from 15 years ago and knowing that there are people who still appreciate it and are still waiting for a fourth season, I think this anime has aged well
I found it a couple years ago and binged. Fantastic show, was pleasantly surprised to see the following still seemed dedicated despite being so late to the party.

I enjoyed the OVA quite a lot, but man... Roberta's injuries by the end definitely seemed like overkill to me. Especially since it doesn't happen like that in the manga. Then again, I suppose it's still a better fate than what happens to a lot of the other characters in the series.
At least she won't have to worry about conflict anymore, and hopefully the meeting with that victim's family will help rid some of the guilt she feels.

Personally I like this version better than the manga one. Granted, if the manga brings Roberta back and they adapt it they'll have to work around this somehow, but on its own terms, I feel this works better. Instead of walking away untouched there are actual consequences, her rampage was ultimately as self destructive physically as it was mentally.
I've definitely softened on this ending. While Roberta is my favorite and I was saddened to see her left a cripple I can see they may have went with this. They wanted to convey that she had very much went on a suicide mission [hence having her in her maid's outfit for the final battle] and if not for Garcia's intervention and Caxton not trying to kill her she may not have survived.

Exactly, believe it or not. I think deep down in her mind, she really wanted to be disabled like that, to cut herself off from doing anymore harm. Hell, she definitely prefer being dead but there's young master who willing to save her no matter what. So, this is a better outcome than the manga.
The manga ending actually make them look like they're disgusted by their own existence for every seconds of their living life, making selfish sacrifices while haunted by doing it, that they don't even appreciate those who helped to save their life. It's a fate worse than death.
You just *know* that Roberta will be back as a cyborg. The Lovelace family is *loaded* with cash.

Everyone is complaining about the fact that she got injured badly in the Anime. But srsly, you can't expect that she'd get away with a few scratches and bruises. She fought against soo many people, you cannot expect her to be immortal. She is also a human being. That's what I like about Black Lagoon, it's not realistic, but it still stays close to the humane side of things. And Roberta only got the wounds because of her mental state (confused, etc.) Her human side almost killed her.

There had to be mote tangible consequences for her actions, since that was what the story tried to convey: that mindless violence was destroying her completely. I know Black Lagoon is more about escapism than about realism, but things were getting too far and ridiculous, arguably by the moment she destroyed that knive with her teeth and survived those RPG's the russkies shot at her.
She was doing well injury wise while she was using her Guerilla tactics.Its when she abandoned it that she sustaining damage.
@The Laughing Man She was still able to walk [albeit using the musket as a cane/crutch] so I can go 50/50 on losing the leg. She still had use of her left arm so that's the most WTF!!?? one. She was able to reach for a gun to shoot Caxton [after she used her left hand to shoot Garcia] So I think its the loss of her left arm that's source of all the controversy.

@@MrAlepedroza Agreed. There are many things which gave me mixed feelings in the OVA that I did not get while watching season 1 & 2 especially with the relationship between Rock and Revy. In the entire OVA, Rock is shown not to even care about Revy even when she has taken injuries to the arms where as in Season 1 episode 7, he cares about her by thanking her for waking him up from a false reality that his old company doesn’t even care about what happens to him and ever since then, they are shown to be protective of each other all the way up to the end of season 2

The manga aside... I actually love this ending for Roberta... We have to remember she has done some terrible shit and her rampage of revenge was not totally justified. At the end of the day, the "Young Masters" desire was for her to finally stop being the wolf... She has to lose her teeth or that will never happen and she has to atone for her sins regardless of her attempts to move on. She was never an innocent character, so now she has paid the price and the limbs she lost are like teeth removed from a wolf... She is finally free to stop being a predator and be at piece, that was her cost for that end.
This basically Madhouses way of saying we're (probably) not returning to this anime.
If a third season was guaranteed then they most likely would have left her intact like the manga.

状況は違えどあのように、知らぬうちにざっくり傷ついてること、めまぐるしいリアルではいくらでもあると思った。

For me personally I wanna see rock come to a crossroads. Where he finally has decide whether he wants to keep on living in the light or become one with the shadows. He’s the makings of a good hunter in my opinion, just needs a little training. And most of all refinement. He can’t go full Revy or Roberta otherwise he will really get himself killed cause he wasn’t born in that world.
If there's no sequel to the anime, it's probably the best way to end it 😌.

I’m so happy Roberta survived and seems to be on the way forward, moving on from all the trauma in her past
The people in that photo are the family members of that man she keeps hallucinating of. In the scene where Garcia rushes in after he witnesses her bashing the head of someone till he dies, she sees a bleeding man talking to her. There, it was explained that Roberta killed him 7 years ago on a mission, while tearing a picture of his family before hand. She felt remorse all this time, and couldn't escape from her past without atonement.
What I love most about this ending is that Roberta isn't running away from her problems anymore, she's facing them and it's only through the kindness and love that Garcia had for her that she could finally see. It's like she was in the most self-destructive place that Revy and others are, but Roberta was able to overcome it because she stopped pretending that her violence was the only way she could atone for her sins.
She had to be shown that no one is perfect in this world but she is loved and she doesn't have to fight to overcome this, she needs to simply face her problems head-on and live her life in peace.
I love how the final song is a gospel song because it highlights just how love is the only way we can get through our own horror and find our light. I wish that for everyone in the world faces these problems to overcome.

It is not just an episode, it is the way how Madhouse made this episode. I'll ask you, how do you think Revy's fans would feel like if they see their favourite character demolished, and broken? If you have watched season 1, and 4 episodes of the OVA where Roberta is clear and present danger for every mook in the OVA (which her opponent are, no matter who they are), and almost indestructible. Use your head man. This was clearly intended to destroy Roberta, and avoid her next appearance.
If you have read the manga, you can also see that she is a perfectly fine. And, that ending would work here perfectly, but no... I haven't been complaining for other 4 episodes. Hell, I like them, but this piece of s*it episode is just made for God only know the reason (except to tell us Roberta is no more).

OK. Sorry, I understand now. I haven't read the manga and haven't had such feelings for Roberta, so for me it was just a beautiful ending, maybe I haven't even noticed her missing arm from the first time I watched... It seems Roberta has more fans than they thought she would. I definitely understand Roberta's fans now. Sorry for you guys. And thanks for explaining. But guys what you have to understand, the song in the ending is so beautiful... It really was a great job by Madhouse, just a little mistake on their part. Maybe they haven't planned any continuation of the show anyway. Which would be sad btw.

I've never said anything about the song (the song is OK), but even if I mute music, I'll still hate the last episode. And, I was just answering your question about hate of the 5th episode. I'm suggesting you to read manga, then you'll understand how much of the great manga material anime removed.
I'll will point at something. Do you see how much Roberta is damaged. She is right handed, but she can't fire any weapon now because she doesn't have a trigger finger, and also she doesn't have the right eye. She has a healthy left eye, but she doesn't have a left arm. And also, she misses a right leg, so she can't run. Tell me, isn't it evident enough that they (studio or author) wanted her out? Those are strategical injuries for viewers to see they will not bring her back. At least for now. Who knows maybe if someone's willing enough to fund remaking of Roberta's Blood Trail, they bring her back?

In 5th episode Revy hit Rock a few times, also when Fabiola shoot Rock, Revy acted indifferent. But, in the manga, in the same scenes, Revy never hit Rock, and when Fabiola shoots him, Revy drew her gun to defend Rock.

Also, it seems to me that Madhouse forced story to make Roberta the bad girl in this OVA, at least I had a feeling this was a sad story about a poor tactical team who fight for their life with the enemy. Maybe the better name for this OVA should be Gray Fox Blood Trail?
And, you're right, they don't plan to make a continuation for a long time (manga is just 10 chapters away from Roberta's story, and that is not enough even for one episode).
I always say, I watched Black Lagoon because of Roberta, and I bought the manga because of her. And, I would love to see her spin-off series. At least in manga.
Black lagoon is a show, a masterpiece. While watching this show you feel sometimes troubled by how much he can seems real. Rock character illustrates this very well in his development. He was swimming in the surface of the world in his old life, by joining revy and dutch by following the black lagoon, he slowly dived into the abyss of the world and saw him confronted with this darkness until seeing his own soul darken litle by litle. Black lagoon is this show which shows you how a soul can be absorbed by the darkness by staying too close to it.

But this is just how we "like" that truth: he goes on and says "facts like that rarely ever change". Damn! So true. That line definitely had an influence on my life. I actually feel a lot of pity for anyone who believes this. They’re as good as admitting guns and money are all that they really have. Which is why I liked the Lovelaces; they knew better than that.

Revy’s words come from being abused by her father, assaulted by a rogue cop and choosing a life of crime, stealing and smuggling and killing until she became empty, the soulless walking dead as Fabiola pointed out. Projecting her inability and unwillingness to rise above her circumstances on others doesn’t make her views gospel.
Love, happiness, integrity, those things don’t come with price tags or at gun point. And no, I’m not a fan of guns for several reasons -
- I’m not interested in hunting
- Not interested in target shooting
- I live in a safe, peaceful community and neighborhood
Now, if you enjoy hunting and target shooting and feel you need a weapon to protect yourself, that’s perfectly fine. Though anyone who states “The value of everything is decided by guns and money” are, in my opinion, as good as admitting guns and money are the only things of value they have in their life and have more in common with a character like Revy then is healthy.
For those saying Roberta won't be able to shoot back in the 80's there was a Mexican cartel boss named Rigoberto campos who was missing both arms dispite missing both arms he proved to be a successful gun slinger with prosthetic arms
If anything, this was a more realistic ending when all you have to fight with against American Armed Forces with just a centuries old musket and popping pills like they’re candy.
Black Lagoon doesn't care about realism, so that's not much of a point.

I've been scared for life. The feels.
Why did they have to do this to Roberta? In the Manga, she came out with minimal injuries, leaving open the possibilities of her returning in future chapters if there are any. Here's she's so banged up that she seems completely helpless, leaving her with one arm with two missing fingers, one eye, and one leg. And I don't remember her left arm getting damaged at all. Why cut it off?

It is always easier to destroy something than to create something. There are many reasons why they did that, from the fact that Roberta is stronger, and more skilled than Revy, and de facto potential danger for her (why do you think author avoided direct confrontation between Roberta, and Revy, when Shenhua stormed at Roberta? Revy's always entering the battle without second thoughts, but here she did not. Reason is only one: if she engaged in the fight, there was a high probability that she could die.) The easiest way was to just wound Revy a little bit, so she could be just an observer for the last episode, and of course avoid the potential fight.
Then, there is possibility that the anime director was not a fan of Roberta, and he just waited for the reason to kick her out.
Animation studio not even tried to make a story, at least plausible. And, the reasons can go on, and on, and on.
This way animation studio took a giant dung on Roberta fans, ruined OVA (at least for me), and for me Black Lagoon anime is off for time being. Or maybe forever.
darksiders2002 I hope that if they do decide to continue and bring Roberta back, they explain that this scene is Garcia's nightmare or something and all Roberta lost was an eye and two fingers. I know it would be a stupid explanation, but with how they ended this OVA, it's about the only way they could do it. I mean, I loved this OVA, but I just don't like how they showed Roberta at the end.

Arthus850 To be honest, your idea has more sense than the whole 5th episode (of course I would still go with the manga Vol.9 ending), because it really makes no sense that a group of soldiers who were protected by Balalaika's soldiers to prevent them getting killed, suddenly got the upper hand in the jungle battle.
I don't see what the big fuss is about. Just because Roberta lost a few limbs and got banged up does not necessarily translate into her being out of commission. Give her an eyepatch plus some prosthetics and she'll be her old lethal self in no time. Keep in mind, this is a woman who can fire a Barrett M82A1 rifle with one arm and shatter a knife with her TEETH.

Garcia was a coward with hesitation, but now he finally has some courage to face his fears, his father's killer, and Roberta.
Even though he or Roberta didn't kill Shane Caxton and avenged his father's death.
In the end, there's no winners, and there's no losers.
Only the sinners remain.
And the truth is that Roberta can't be forgiving for what she done in the past.
Roberta did something that she can't give it back, and it will haunt her forever.
Also, Caxton himself won't be forgiving for the murder of Diego Lovelace, Garcia's father.
Stories like this don't have happy endings.

I'd more likely guess it's the anonymous Japanese businessman's family. He manifests throughout the show as a projection of her conscience. Confronting them is Roberta's final way to lay her past to rest.
Manga version is better and I think it's the real canon one because Rei Hiroe wasn't really involved in the making of the OVAs (they cutted a lot of scenes and changed the plot) and on his Twitter he still draw Roberta uninjured ;)
Rei Hiroe is the author and creator of this series and characters. For all intents and purposes he is the Word of God when it comes to Black Lagoon.

In the aftermath, Roberta will never used guns or not strong enough to hold another weapon ever again, shortly after she left her arm, her 2 fingers and her leg in the end.

I don't hate the anime version, but I prefer the manga version, because she finishes without such serious injuries.
Funny, I was watching them again and I saw it in the third one then returned to comment only for you to beat me to it. You're correct as the businessman told her, "...you ripped apart my family photo before killing me." and you can see an image of the ripped up pieces and catch a glimpse of the exact same photo she has here not sure how she got a new whole photograph. It seems Caxton may have tracked them down for her god knows how he convinced them to meet peacefully.

I can live with this because it's a spiritual thing, such as a once harsh surfaced rock now smooth by water, conviction came over
Roberta/Rosarita Cisneros in her broken state by Garcia which I believed was moved by the holy spirit to bring back the lost soul of his once upright maid to bring here truly into saint hood resolved to being by his new found husband and Garcia being by his new found wife,and about marriage I haven't found much to tell if the young Garcia marring woman past his youth is but still it was a peaceful ending, and i know that many fans of Roberta's final ending aren't going to agree with me on this one but this is just me on my interpretation and significance their is on how this all played out and fans still wish that she was still gun slinging as normal but I guess Roberta could care less about ever resurrecting her past and if something ever happens like the dark conspiring shadow government of the U.S coming after the Lovelace and targeting Caxton and his men that survived for permanently interrupting their plans in the Golden Triangle then as that woman in cloak and dagger said that they would come after the world like a hydra and may prepare to light the fuse to start WWIII from the shadows which the Lagoon company may partake with other allies to stop WWIII from happening.

全体を通してだけど、リアリティを補強する方向に改変が行われてる。
日本のスクールガールのトップオヤブン編のラストなんか良い例なんだけど、原作では脈略なく、神社に和装で現れて対決してたのに対し、アニメではちゃんと明確な対決の目的のため布石を打ってロック達を追いかけてる。
だから、普段着のままだった。
(あの唐突な和装こそ、B級映画感があったんだけどな)

I'm sorta alright with the anime's ending for Roberta. I mean, she has been though hell and deserves some closure. But if they do decide to stick to minor injuries manga Roberta than I guess prosthetics would suffice...Heck maybe do some spinoff with the Lovelaces but when they are a bit older or something.

Ignoring the age difference the only ship that made sense to me was Garcia and Roberta and I guess except for her feelings towards Rock, Revy has a long way to go if she's thinking about any relationship.
In the manga he was supposed to be 17-18 when this story takes place. Blood Trail is supposed to take places years after their initial appearance in the series. The series condensed it down to 6 months between appearances. Hence why he's the same age as when he first appeared.
So Garcia kisses her out of romantic affection? Because as an anime only watcher i to this day can't find an answer as to why he kissed her? Lol

First off, I think Rock did well to save most of the main cast who is involved in this arc including Garcia, Roberta, Fabiola and many more.
Second, like other comment said, he doesn't want to go back to Japan anymore and the Tokyo arc solidifies that. Japan is not his home anymore. His home is right there with the BL crew.
Personally, I hope that the story will develop to the point where Rock will eventually be able to make some change and who knows? Save whoever he can save.

I’m not upset about the state of Roberta at the end of this OVA, but I AM confused as to how she lost her entire left arm. At the end of the battle, it didn’t look like her left arm was THAT injured, and it was still functional enough for her to aim and use a pistol. So where, when, and how exactly did her left arm become so injured that it had to be amputated? Can someone help me figure out if I missed something?

Honestly same. Like the injuries did give great effect for the ending for me, until I thought about it. I don't recall her taking any major injuries to her arm in the OVA. I get the leg, she took several rounds to the leg along with other injuries (and in severe GSW cases, amputation is not unheard of). The fingers are explained quite clearly lol, as is the eye. But the arm! WHY DID THEY REMOVE HER ARM? I know its an anime trope to have characters lose their arms, but I dunno. It's got me confused and snorting copium. It just hurt to see her so badly dinged up.

It's because the Twins were too far gone by that point, so it's unlikely for them to ever stop killing and they had to be put out of their misery. Whereas Roberta got eventually reasoned with and earned a Happy Ending.
