Another thing I found quite shocking was publishing everyones grades in the newspaper. How horrifying for the students! I'm glad that the records have now been anyonymized. In Germany, the teachers at your school grade the assignments, but for the graduation exams there always have to be two evaluations by two different teachers, to avoid personal bias of one teacher influencing the grades. You get the grades of your written exams before you apply for oral exams, so if you did really bad on a written exam, you can choose to do an __additional__ oral exam on the same subject to improve your grade. Otherwise you only need to choose 1 oral exam.
We also have that in the Netherlands but without the extra oral exam option thing. It’s a good and fair system especially for tests as big as the ones for graduation
I love your braids!! 😍 This was very relaxing by the way, and interesting. The screen tracing with the highlighters is just, WOW! Screen tracing and personal attention are my fave triggers! 😩✨ I watched this just after watching the video where you educate us about a South African Christmas, which I really enjoyed as well!! ❤️ Please make more educational themed videos and educate us more about South Africa. (i know im asking for too much, lol) 🤗
This was very interesting! Especially to compare it with the German school system. In Germany, you can reach different levels of qualifications in different years. After grade 9 you are allowed to leave school and learn a basic job like clerk, manufacturing and handywork. After grade 10 and graduation exams in Maths, German, English, and another subject of your choice (like biology, geology or informatics) you can enter most technical and social apprenticeships. After year 11 you are qualified to enter a university of applied sciences to study things like engineering, nautics, or computer science. After year 12 and graduation exams in German, English and Maths, as well as 2 additional subject of your choice, you get the permission to enter universities. To get a grade 11 and grade 12 degree, you need to have learnt 2 foreign languages for a specific amount of years. English is taught as the 1st foreign language in most schools, and 2nd foreign language can either be French or Spanish, or more rarely Greek, Latin, Polish or Italian. Germany consists of 16 federal states that all have marginally different school systems, but recently a few states have standardized their assignments for the grade 12 exam in order to make sure that the grades have the same "quality" nationwide. But many states still do their own and some are considered harder and "more worthy" than others.
In Ireland we have a point system. Grades will give you a certain amount of points and the more points you get the better. This helps you get into college, each course is different. Points don't correlate to standards of the course (some courses do require you to get certain grades in certain subjects), just how much in demand a course is. So if there's a course a lot of people want to get into it will have high points and only the people with the highest grade will get into. So even if you don't do too well there will be a course somewhere that you'll qualify for.
How would that work if you are in an American school system but want to attend college in Ireland? That is what I am planning to do. I find this very interesting as American school systems accept you based on your gpa (grade point average) rather than a points system.
This was so interesting and relaxing! Grades in the US are similar to South Africa, we have kindergarten- 4th or 5th grade for elementary school (the same as primary school, we just call it a different name) we have 5th or 6th - 8th grade for middle school. Some start at 6th grade but mine started at 5th grade. Our high schools are 9th grade - 12th grade. Thank you for teaching us about the South African education system, it was very interesting!❤️ your braids are gorgeous by the way!❤️
A lot of schools will start middle school at 7th grade as well. I went to a lot of schools growling up(military kid) and most had middle school starting at either 6th or 7th. Why so much variation, I have no idea.
It is so fascinating to me how many languages are spoken in South Africa. Especially when you compare its size to the US where, of course, most people speak only English. The whole notion of a "home language" is really cool to me as well. It's really cool that the human brain can be taught to switch rapidly between different languages. I wish my culture put a higher priority on teaching other languages when kids were young. We had Spanish class once a week part of the time I was in elementary school but it certainly never felt like the goal was for us to become fluent.
First of all: you look stunning. And wow, that shirt makes such a delicious crinkley sound! This video is amazing. Ill find out more things to say the day I am able to watch more than 10 minutes of it, so far Ive fallen asleep every time. Thank you for yet another great vid!

So informative and r-e-l-a-x-i-n-g. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to press replay on each one of your videos I’ve watched because I fall asleep so fast. Thank you!
Your explanation of the Matric test grades is giving me secondhand anxiety and I'm fully an American and well into my university education 💀 new respect for my South African friends unlocked
It sounds quite unfair that the South African system makes people choose what language they learn based on their background. I'd imagine that this results in a lot of segregation into language groups. Is Afrikaans still considered "more useful" compared to other home languages?
It depends on the environment, if you are in a predominantly white area then YES! your home language is useful if you stay in an area with black people. It all depends on where you are... So I can't really say
Agree, that sounds like a really bad system. Wouldn't it help for cultural understanding if white people learned Xhosa or Zulu (or whatever language is spoken by the native black people in their area) and black people learned Afrikaans?
This video was so relaxing it’s has taken several attempts to listen to the full video. I would become too relaxed and fall asleep. But I really wanted to listen & learn all of the facts you shared, so I kept coming back to this video. Thank you as always for making such great videos! hey, I love your videos x. Just wanted to clarify that in South Africa public schools write NSC exams and private schools write the IEB exams so they do not write the same exams. Also the results no longer get printed out in the newspapers to protect students (POPIA ACT). Matric students also no longer have to come back to school to repeat the matric year, they can simply rewrite the exams in the next year without actually going back to school. 3 languages are not compulsory in all primary schools, you can do 2 from primary school depending on the school you attended. It is also not compulsory to do your home language at school, I only did english and afrikaans since grade 1 and i never did my home language (tswana) at school.
I got a fact right! The language learning one! I was shocked about learning three languages but then realized there's a lot of languages spoken in South Africa, so learning English AND Afrikaans along with your home language would all be important! I feel smart. >:o)
south africa’s CTAs are similar to australia’s NAPLAN - in grades 3,6 & 9 if i remember we are all given the same test in maths, reading and writing across the whole of australia and we have to do it all at the same time across australia! how interesting:)

So interesting 🤔🤔🤔 however that is not necessarily the case in South Africa. Everyone wears it, even poor people. I've never seen a school in South Africa where kids don't wear uniforms
@@africanxhosaasmr if all schools in the US wore uniforms it would be wonderful. It would stop some of the bullying in schools and help to improve students self esteem (in regards to poorer students).
That's really only something Americans deal with. Most places (including Canada) have uniforms for many different types of schools, not just wealthy ones.
Australia is weird because our education is delegated to the states so the education systems are a bit different in each state and territory. My territory is extra weird because Australia does not have middle schools (those years are just the first two of high school) but where i live we have the last two years of high school seperated into a whe different school that acts as a stepping stone between school and whatever you are doing next. So you arent required to wear uniform or stay on campus all day, and the only required subject is doing english for one of the two years. Its a great system but not really viable in terms of establishment costs outside of our tiny territory.
They are actually real. I removed the glass inside because I didn't want any reflection on them. I then put it back after filming 🙈😄... Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video 💕
Kinda curious what EMS and life Orientation are about. EMS sounds like it's math, just economics specific or is it more like actual life skills that we don't learn in American schools like taxes and such?
EMS (Economic and Management Sciences) is a subject that we have from gr.7-9, it's not a math based subject. It's a lot of economics based theory and also some accounting. Life Orientation we have for our entire school career. It focuses on topics like addiction, bullying, abuse, etc. Generally quite important knowledge to have but it doesn't necessarily teach you any life skills.
@@alittlelovesick Aaaah still wish we had that in my school system. As much as I love reading, that sounds more important than knowing what an iambic pentameter is.
These are such offensive & ignorant questions in soooo many levels because it sounds like I am not worthy of symmetrical/evenly spaced/ shiny/perfect hair. It also feels like you're asking me these questions because I'm black & people of my race can't have hair like that. Maybe you didn't mean for it to sound like that, but it does.... & to answer your questions, NO it isn't a wig. I got braided/plaited by my sister.
