  • This is a 2003 Volvo XC90 T6 AWD with the Dolby surround sound. Evidently the FM receiver circuit boards are different from the 2006 which has more modules and relocated audio section. Also, I did not need to cut and wire on the circuit board as is shown on the 2006 and newer.

    Many many thanks for creating this video! I did this mod today and it works as desired. Without connection on 3.5mm I can listen to radio like always; when any source is connected to 3.5mm, FM is muted perfectly and music is playing.
    My XC90 is 2.5D 5cyl from 2004 with factory phone and gps. Board version was “2006”, the second one you presented. There is one very handy hole in the metal plate for the cable.
    As for the sound - it is splendid and better that it ever was, since my CS player shows deck error and FM radios in the Netherlands are not the best in terms of audio fidelity.
    Cable I used is just plain Ethernet, 5 meters is enough to get it to front seat, if you want to get it somewhere into dash best is to use about 7M.

    Just did this on my 2004 XC90 today. Wow, surprised how well it worked!! I bought a 20' shielded 3.5mm headphone cable on Amazon and cut one end off to use as the audio cable. Also got a lightning adapter with a 3.5mm jack and a charging port so you can charge and listen on an iphone at the same time. I was looking at a $250 solution from Grom, glad I tried this first. Kudos to whoever figured out the proper places to solder the audio cable!! The only thing you don't get with this solution is the ability to change tracks with the steering wheel buttons, otherwise the sound is great and very happy with this hack!! BTW, my 2004 had the 2nd type of board in it which is listed in the comments and on the video as being only on 2006 and later.

    So glad i came across this video. I just replaced my headliner and was wondering what that was. I'm reviving a 2006 back to life. The plastic part that extrudes through the body is faded on the outside top. Now knowing that is where the antenna is, I will be a little more selective on what types of paints I use to repaint the exterior part of the plastic. I would personally just love to remove the entire entertainment system and replace with a modular modern system that uses something like Android OS. But the way Volvo has that system integrated throughout the body frame is going to make it difficult. There are some things that Volvo did to their vehicles that I am like...wow! That is genius. Then there are other things, like the radio, I'm like WTF??

      @@ProZacksProjects Great install, perfect improvised solution. I bought an '05 V8 for a work truck. I noticed the rear multimedia set-up, premium sound, navigation pops up out of the dash... everything i could need. Then i discovered that it was missing the MOST IMPORTANT THING, an AUX input. No worries, I'll just install a Line In to the antenna... oh no, its all fiber optic! I got a FM Modulator but I live in Austin, Texas. Every single frequency has a station, even the 87s and 107s.
      This has all been very infuriating until I stumbled upon your video. Thank you!!!
      I've noticed a lot of aftermarket head units say it won't work on XC90's without an AUX input (they keep the little LCD screen and you have to turn it to AUX. Does your hack solve that by turning it to FM then? I was planning on just yanking every aspect of the radio and install new amps and JBL components but a Volvo tech warned me that some of the security and ignition runs through the factory stereo (i guess this is why that little LCD has to remain hooked up).
      Sorry for the long comment, thanks again for sharing your work!

      @@greghoward4043 that's awesome you got the media package. What this does is overrides the FM signal coming once you plug in your AUX cable. The ground on the cable is what turns kills the incoming sound from the station then you only hear what you're playing. I hope this answers your question

      The radio of my car does not have an AUX input by factory, so that nothing can be changed in the radio related to the AUX.
      I do not need to change anything in the radio.
      Just need to switch on the radio, even let it to play any radio channel, and then connect the newly installed aux cable to the phone/tablet. Once the music starts play in the phone/tablet the radio will stop playing radio channel and start the music from the phone/tablet.

      Neil Glenister my galaxy note 4 would do that when i connected it. Once i got the note 8, it cuts the radio as soon as i plug it in. I believe it's how the device utilizes the headphone jack. Try plugging a different device if you have one and see if it makes a difference. Hope this helps.

    I’ve found some similar instructions on swede speed forums. Who recommended cutting the r9 part of the circuit board. Which had something to do with the AM?
    I believe theirs worked by press AM on the receiver.
    How did yours work?
    Do you know if it’s necessary to cut r9

    • @bauyrzhankokanov5498
      @bauyrzhankokanov5498 Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, that disables the AM bandwidth from the circuit, since you soldered to the AUX. Your AM channel on the stereo will work for AUX input and still you can use FM for your radio

    Hi, very good video. I have an xc90 of the year 2006, and I can not install an auxiliary input to the radio of the vehicle, several people tell me that it is very difficult to have fiber optic connections. I like your video for the simple and not so invasive of the installation. I could send a map of where to connect the cables to the antenna of the vehicle please, I am from Chile and I do not understand much English, to explain to a technician what to do and where to weld, I would greatly appreciate it.

      Sorry, I just saw your comment. It might depend on your ground. The ground on the end of the headphone Jack is what interrupts the signal but it could be that the Jack isn't grounding enough. That's a tough one. Hopefully this helps.

  • @WilliamPainterSellsNavarre

    Can you describe the wire connections both at the pcb and then on the Aux Jack side? It appears to be 3-wire at PCB (I have an 06 XC90) but in the day-after shot it looks like you might have had 4-wires. Then you spoke about soldering the 2 grounds as one and then red and white to the speaker wire going up front. Does the Aux Jack have Left-Right-Grnd? Thanks all in advance.

    • @ProZacksProjects
      @ProZacksProjects  Před 5 lety

      I was using to speaker wires so I just utilize the black wire in both of those as the ground. So the 2 grounds put together were acting as one wire. So you would have left, right, and those 2 together as 1 for the ground making a total of 3 wires, if that makes sense.

    What mode did you use to test surround sound. Was it on FM? So any fm frequency would do or need to set the radio for a certain frequency? Sorry a lil bit confused here.

    • @ProZacksProjects
      @ProZacksProjects  Před rokem +1

      So any fm frequency will be overrode when you’re plugged in and in the settings you go to surround sound and select it. I would give clearer directions if I hadn’t just sold my XC90.

      The input on the amplifier is digital. Unless you have a device that can interface with the digital protocol, the input at the amplifier is useless.

      Make sure the device isn’t plugged in to the cars power. If that’s not it, try plugging in a different device. If that doesn’t solve it, there’s inline noise reducers for things like this if you can’t get it to stop. Hope this helps.

  • @fengjiani

    • @ProZacksProjects
      @ProZacksProjects  Před 3 lety +1

      When nothing is connected to the jack the radio works like normal without any noise. Once you connect something, the top of the jack, the ground, and it overrides the incoming signal. The only time you might get some noise is if you touch the end to a grounded source.

    • @ProZacksProjects
      @ProZacksProjects  Před 3 lety +1

      The + & - refer to left and right. It's kind of complicated but I'll try to make sense. Typically the red wire is the right speaker and the other color which may be black or green that is the left speaker. What you can do is sauder on the wires to the pcb and then the connection that you're gonna make to the headphone Jack, just connect them temporarily and do an audio test to see if the left speaker is making the left speaker sound and if not the can just switch the cables. Hopefully this helps. You can mix them up and all sound just fine but if there something that is supposed to come out of the left speaker might come out the right speaker.
