fun fact: in gyakuten kenji 2 (ace attorney investigations 2), there’s a real anti-piracy measure built in where if the game detects an illegal copy, it displays the entire game in the fictional borginian language found within the game. it’s playable, yet none of the dialogue is readable. it’s actually really cool, and often i find the real anti-piracy measures taken in games more interesting than the fake ones created. there’s an article abt it on tcrf if you’d like to read more

Can you provide an example of what you mean? Like a timestamp for that sound?
Edit: If you mean the sound that is on 8:06 my Wii actually does that sound when it freezes. I can be playing a game and it just freezes and that sound comes on quite loud. Once you get used to it it isn't that bad anymore.
Anyone know what the actual sound effect is called? It really messes with your fight or flight instincts.

When I was a teen I had a Donkey Kong Country 2 cartridge, we used to play it with my friends and cousins usually surround the screen. I just inserted it on my Snes and it popped a polite message on-screen saying that piracy was illegal. For whatever reason it triggered it and it took two attempts at switching the power button and removing it to make it work. I don't believe these messages were ''scary'' or ''funny'' most of it is probably done by modders today.

The Mario kart one has got to be he creepiest, as first it interrupts your race, then says that piracy was detected, then says you can play as ?????????, then does the detection warning again, then the classic error sound, then it's says it again, then when you go to character selection, it shows all the characters heads with no eyes, then the sound again, then a glitched world where only you can move, the characters (including yours) have no heads, and the NPC's are T-posing, then the sound yet again, then luigi after falling out of his kart, and a warning above him as well, by far the creepiest

Ratings these based on my opinion
1) Super Mario 3D World (0:00 - 2:55) Pretty good start and gets the point across, not particularly that scary to me, but pretty good, 7/10.
2) Ace Attorney ( 2:59 - 4:19) I absolutely love this one! It's funny, it stays true to the game, and it explains piracy, it goes to show that you don't need blood and horror to make an anti-piracy screen, 10/10
3) Minecraft (4:20 - 5:50) Much like the Mario one, it's not scary, it just gets the point across, 7/10
4) Mario Kart Wii (5:51 - 9:34) I think it is just a little bit overdone, but it would definitely scare me if I were playing it. The ending statement with luigi does make it seem real. 8/10
