- GANG It is my pleasure to finally bring you the CANON A-1 REVIEW! This camera has won me over from the first time I got to hold it, apart from the Minolta x-700 this camera is the real deal with its versatile features making it one of the Best Values in Film Photography!
The A-1 lacks no features being the first programmable camera with Aperture priory, Shutter Priority, Manual mode and program mode all pact into the same body! It takes the always sharp Canon FD lenses and also has a double exposure feature! Definitely worth the money and If you're getting into film photography in 2018, this should be the camera to go for!

Best film camera of all time. Bought my A-1 new in 1979 and am about to gift it to a friend's son who is heavily into vintage cameras. He is about 30 years of age and will give it a new lease of life. To give him the best experience possible, I have repackaged the camera body, lenses and case in their original boxes. Hopefully he will get the same unboxing experience that I had as a young man 40 years ago.
What was his reaction to the gift?
Hertog von Berkshire Yea vintage cameras are gorgeous , I have just found an old canon eos 1000 with 2 lents in my grandparents house + an Olympus af s-2
That awesome man! Sure he really enjoyed it,
That is beautiful
You're amazing 👏🏾
Story time: I thought I bought an AE-1 off Ebay, saw your first video about the A1, felt salty...
And then I get my package and an A1 pops out. Look at God.
Most of my youth was with a zenit 10 but these are really nice. :)
Hahahaha
I have Canon AE-1, not really mine, but my dad’s, im going to restore it, i already ordered, some battery, film at strap
Lucky bastard 😂
Would be nice if that kind of thing happened every day.
I looove this camera. Got one last year, because I wanted to start over with film photography again and instantly fell in love with this beautiful piece of technology.
About the noise from the mirror dampening mechanism: I had that symptom, when I got her. Just one little drop of oil that does not hurt plastic gears (don't use WD40 or something like that. It will corrode them away over time) injected with a needle and it ran like a charm again. There are several videos here on youtube explaining how to find the right spot for injection by unmounting the lower part of the body.
I recently got an A-1 so I was really excited to see this pop up on my notifications! Great video as always dude keep up the good work
Jessica Li thank you!!
Man I love your photos so much. They have so much character and just a tranquil fluidity to the scenery. It's beautiful. You could make any camera take million dollar shots.
Perfect timing - just bought an Canon A-1 Body. Keep up the good work!
MY MAN! My A-1 just came in this week! That's insane, great video as always man, looking forward to future content as always.
Lena Le haha it was meant to me!
My A-1 is a tank that has lasted me since 96' in hs photography class to now. I was lucky enough to pick up some additional A-1 & other Canon A-series 35mm SLR film bodies. But the A-1 was the first when I decided to move on from the standard issued Pentax K-1000 body at school to a body I could call my own. Little did I know that it would teach me so much about the art. I am the artist, the camera(plus FD mount lenses & live stock films) is my brush and the world is the canvas.
Just got my hands on one of this A-1 in super clean condition,,,! Great feed back excellent information thanks for the tips, amazing work!
My parents bought me a new A-1 for high school graduation in 1978. Seeing how I had no interest in photography then, I put it in a drawer for roughly 10 years (believe it or not). Somehow I developed the film bug circa 1988, and rediscovered that brand-new beauty, as a gift from heaven. I'm now an independent documentary filmmaker, using that gem (along with my smart phone) for still shots; as a matter of fact, I'm looking up at it on my top shelf right now. I used to use a gorgeous film stock called Velvia, but have transferred to Kodak Portra 400. I adore seeing a new generation becoming enamored with film photography in general, and this film camera in particular. Thanks for this fine review my man!
Really great video and I love your shots man, some nice use of light going on.
Just got an A-1 last month with the 50mm f/1.8. Phenomenal camera. I shot two rolls of film but I have yet to get them developed. I love the feel of the camera while I’m shooting and I love the clarity of the view finder. Hands down one of my favorite cameras.
the canon a-1 is an amazing,
i only hear good stuff about it!
thanks for sharing this with us,
really enjoyed watching this
my dad just gave me a dusty old suitcase and said “here i know you like cameras and i found this in my garage” and it was this camera lol i haven’t used it for a cool 2 years. but i’ve started to get into it more, thanks!
Thanks so much for this review and explanation. Have recently been gifted one! Having many years ago used an AE1P I just need to unlearn that and adapt to the A1. You've helped me, looking forward to taking a few shots!
Loved my A-1 back in the 80s. I shoot digital now, but this video is giving me some nostalgia pangs.
I ran into this camera for $40 today. Had some brassing on the edges and no where near as clean as yours, but it came with the 50mm/1.8. It feels so advanced versus my Pentax K1000 that I learned photography on. Such a steal and this review was really entertaining. Looks like I got a steal!
bought my a-1 back in 1978 for a whole lot of money, still use it and it functions just like when I purchased it.that says a lot about canon quality.
Just got mine in the mail! Thank you so much for this video!
Started with the A-1 now I shoot a Leica MP film camera and my trusty Canon Canonet G-III QL17. Keep up the great content!
While I've enjoyed shooting with my A-1, I still prefer the F1N because of the ergonomics. I think the A-1 is a bit odd to use compared to the F1N. But for the money, I'd shoot A-1 any day of the week! It's definitely better (for me) than the AE-1 or the AE-1 Program. Great review!
Hey, thanks to your videos I just picked up an A1 today 😁 Came with the 50mm 1.8... $95
It's kinda worn condition but it's got a huge grip with an extra shutter button (not sure the point of it), and it has a Date/Year stamp on the back.. have you ever seen one with that? The extra features makes it really heavy!
Edit: Ooh I'm not sure but it might be a speed-winder 😲
Edit: I figured it out now: the extra shutter mount is the Canon Motor Drive - continuous shooting up to (I believe) 5 frames per second!
And the feature on the back cover is the optional Data Back! You can set a Year/date stamp (as long as it's a year between 1978 and 1988😆)
A lot of those classic cameras are things of beauty, like this one. They're just a joy to hold in your hand and fiddle with, and fire the shutter with no film loaded, etc. - things you can't do with a lot DSLRS, which also don't have that precision-engineered look and feel. Of course today's cameras are every bit as good and as well engineered, but they just don't feel like it as much. And to have that kind of precision in an all-analog, mostly-mechanical camera was an achievement indeed.
The A-1 is actually digitally controlled by a computer, first film camera of its time, I believe, to use a computer.
One of the good things in my eyes is the Programm mode, even if I don't use it, you can put it in p and lock the wheel and give it to a person who doesn't know much about photography and they can take pictures with it, that was not the case with my AE1 for example.
The video that inspired me to buy the A-1. Haven’t regretted it since.
if you use aperture priority. you just choose a aperture and the camera will decide what shutter speed right? is that a accurate? i was planning to do that in my trip on beach for less hassle. please respond 🤔
Got one of these with the intention of having it as a backup to my F1 camera back in the 90's but never got to use it. I remember I just fired a couple of test shoots with it but funny thing is I never actually took a single roll with it, not even one photo. Ever! That was before it ended up sitting somewhere in my storage in original wrap and box intact!... One of these days I'll find it.
So... have you found it yet?
Yeah did you?
Love the vids, KJ. If you haven't already, please review the Olympus Trip 35.
god bless! ive been waiting for this video for a while and i hope more people start to give the A1 more recognition :)
Elijah Aguirre yessss!!! The a-1 definitely deserves it bro
Super good review! Thank you , very informative!
Hey King. Enjoyed your video review, thanks a lot! Could you please advise me on Nikon film 📸, which is the best for Black and White photography?! Appreciate that. Good luck 🤞
Perfect review bro !!!! Love it keep on killing it
Dennis Brown jr. DENNIS!! Thank you brother
I just got an A-1 recently! It had the dreaded "Canon cough," but I was able to fix it pretty easily with some clock oil and a narrow straw. Definitely worth doing.
Adam Redmond haha nice man!
That zing is the shutter brake. I like your fix!
This was my first SLR camera which I purchased way back in 1978. I went ahead and bought the Canon 28mm and 100-200mm lenses for it. It was a great camera and advanced camera at the time especially with the digital red LED read out that you will see inside the view finder which no other camera had at the time. I sold the camera and lenses after 5 years of use and never went back into photography until the digital camera came about. Today after holding an A-1 after all these years it felt kinda small in my hands compared to my Canon 5D Mk IV and of course better lenses like the Canon 24-70mm F 2.8, 70-200mm F 2.8 and Sigma 50mm F 1.4 Art lens which I use in high school sports photography. If your new into 35mm film photography this is the best camera to purchase. You won't regret it. Unless your a Nikon fan.
Loved the video and dope content. Would have been even better if instead of just showing us old photos at the end you had grabbed the gopro and filmed yourself taking some shots in the streets with it, Eduardo Goye style. Either way, always hyped to see new content!
While looking for my 1st SLR I was seeking an ae-1. Accidentally I found a-1 for a bargain price on Craigslist with a case, 2 lenses, light meter, flash and full paperwork - og warranty, manual for both camera and lenses, and many more. The thing was the seller inhireted it from a relative and knew absolutely nothing about the camera, couldn't even turn it on. I bought it in a heartbeat with a risk it might not work. I am sure this camera meant a lot to the OG owner, because now I have a mint condition, fully working A-1 that needed just a battery replacement. It's gonna stay with me as long as I'm into photography 😍
Hey! Love your videos. Just getting into film and I picked up a Minolta SRT101. I notice some dust specks in the viewfinder. I looked at the mirrors and theres some "fogginess" around the edges as well but no dirt. The fogginess looks like dried out oil since its around 50+ years old. As for the specks, I would assume its above the mirrors in some nooks and crannies. None of this matters, correct? As the mirror "jumps" out of the way for the exposure.. Just want to make sure before I start my first roll of film. Thank you for your input!
i first got a A-1 almost a year back, and i found ur channel bc i was looking for A-1 instruction and feature video
I picked my A-1 up from B&H cameras pretty reasonably.
Thanks for this video. Very informative!
I love mine and plan to keep it as long as it keeps going, which got me to thinking about the reliability of these 70's and 80's SLR's. I've always had good reliability from the Canons but I wondered which were the best for long reliable service? OM series? Nikon?
a-1 was my first camera (yes, I'm that old)...still have it!!! the fd 135/2 is the best portrait lens out there...high recommend
deltadave44 I’d love that lens Rn
Never been a "Canon Guy" but this vid was really well done per usual for King J! Who knows, I might pick one up.
Have a ae1 non program, scratched ONE roll like 5 frames. Lots of fringing in the trees but not visible if you got it printed
Damn I've had my A1 for about 2 years now & I never knew about that double exposure feature. I just held the rewind button on the bottom and shoot that way lol. Also a warning: there was a manufacturing flaw that the A1 would use battery power, even on Lock. Mine would do that + freeze up and not "turn on" I fixed this by periodically taking the battery out for extended periods of time. But I still love it & this makes me want to shoot on it haha thank you🙌
Hi, I love your videos! I’m a high school student that’s really into photography, and I just wanted to know if you’ve ever consider the brand Contax? I would really like to see a video about the RTS or the Aria. I know they’re a little more expensive than most brands but if you could get your hands on one I’d appreciate that! Thank you!
10:10 nailed it bro
Just picked up an A1 with 50mm 1.8 and 135mm 2.8 for $16 at an estate sale. Already loving it alongside my AE-1!
Great stuff KJ! I use the A-1 a lot. Love your B&W images my man.
Aristo Ioannidis Thanks brother!! How do you feel about the “mode dials”
KingJvpes You get used to it. Initially, you keep an eye on the dial but after a few takes you know were you are, so to speak. I alternate between by F-1 and the A-1. By the way I love your work and your passion for film photography.
Nice to see a video strongly recommending something besides a ae-1 or k1000. I like both camera's, but there weren't the only good SLR's ever made.
Thanks for this vid! Everyone was recommending the AE-1 but it didn't have aperture priority! I can't imagine myself not using Av mode so I'm glad I found out about the A-1, and can't find to pick one up :)
I just bought a Praktica Super TL 1000, with three lenses. (55, 35, & 135 mm). Should arrive any day now, quite excited to use a film camera for the first time.
I love the A-1! I never plan in selling mine. Thanks for the video!
Samuel Lazo Same! Will be with me forever alongside the x-700!
Your vids are way too awesome. I have just started my film journey this month. Your vids are helping me a lot. Thanks bruh! Btw, are you filipino? Mabuhay! 👌🏼🇵🇭
Great looking body and some dope features. Great explanation, my dude.
Please do a Olympus OM-2N review like this one! I really like ur video, thanks :)
Nooooo what have you done!
Ive been wanting one for a while now and now the prices are going to shoot up just as they were going to a really good spot. :(
How is this a predecessor to the AE-1 Program when it has more modes and functionality. Was looking into buying an AE-1 Program, glad I stumbled upon your video (about the top 5 film cameras under 100), definitely will be looking for an A-1 now - thanks!
#minoltaGang when the notification comes on I always tap it to see your awesome videos
mauricio saldana Haha thanks Mauricio
Wrap it before you tap it
Got one of these past down from my mom! Thanks for telling me how to use it.
Bought my A-1 in 1980 w/50m f2.8 $500. Still have and it still works perfectly.
Your content is the best for this camera. thank you for that. What's your favorite lens to shoot with this?
Is that brand new? It looks beautiful.
Got back into film about a year ago and I've been using a K-1000. It's been fun, but feels like high school haha.
I think I would be better if I shoot w/ a film camera .... These cameras are making me more excited to shoot ... I think I will try! Thank man!
underrated camera for sure. I got mine for $70 in perfect condition - including 3 nice lenses, a replacement battery, a bag, strap, remote shutter cable, flash, and some lens filters
I just bought one last week, it’s amazing
Photos at the end were amazing 🤙
This camera is godlike. My main film camera that i favor over all of my others (although i do want an F1 or nikon F3). Picked it up for 5$ along with a 50 1.4 for 5$ at my local film camera store a year ago
You got the deal of a lifetime. Both the camera and lens are excellent. The 50/1.4 alone is worth $60. Paired with the A-1, that's a $200 value, easy
Have you tried a Praktica? I'd recommend the BC1 and BX20, very cheap on Ebay and fantastic. I'm interested in trying the Canon A1 of course ;)
Thanks bro! u teached me enough of it i wish i could see you
Canon A-1 is such a great film camera out there, but I still love my Pentax Spotmatic
How long are the battery’s supposed to last on the Canon A-1s. I’m wondering cause I’ve already replace the battery twice in about two months of owning it. I was wondering if it was because I need to put it on L every time i finish using it or if there’s something wrong with my camera.
I had a few a couple AE-1s pretty good cameras. mine all squeaked but still worked. had a bushing that would squeak over time.
can you explain a situation where the stop-down lever should (or could) be used? what is its purpose in real life situations?
i've had this camera for more than a year and have been using it in AV mode only.. so i decided to research more of its functionalities and experiment more with it
Found this really helpful thanks
Can you suggest a flash I can purchase compatible with the A-1?
im practically brand new at doing film photography. id like to find one of these with a lense already on it, or a pentax. however its been really hard to find either of them in good condition. any advice on where to look?
Help me! I was replacing the lens on my A-1 and had somehow fumbled and jammed the Stop-Down Lever (showing the red dot lock indicator) and Shutter Lever (in upward position, rather resting downward) where the lens would mount. The Film Advance arm, Multiple-Exposure Lever are stuck too. Shutter button not working, and opening the back of the camera (empty of film) doesn't reset anything. I've check the Battery Life Indicator light, and that still flashes fast (meaning life is still significant according to the manual). I've opened the bottom plate and checked that shutter mechanism thing, and but that wasn't stuck, as suggested by another video. Do you have anything tricks that I can try out?
I have that camera, with a 50mm F1,4. I recommend this lens.
thanks for the video, i really needed a actual revew for this camera, im goingfor the t60 wich i found reaaaaally cheap and if i do like and feel confortable shooting in film then i'd buy this one, cheers!
It's a great camera which I'm still learning about the different settings on it . The only issue is the film counter only go's from 28 to 38 and not back to the beginning .
Probably because it may not take a high capacity 250 shot film back like the F series Canons.
Where do you get those colorful shutter buttons? I saw them featured on a prior ep.
Just picked up an A-1 the other day So excited to shoot it. my first Film camera is my Pentax K1000 which I still use. the A-1 was just the body and the original manual, and a Canon 199A speed light for $160 Canadian. Picked up a Canon 50mm f/1.8 and 28mm f2.8! time to go shoot!
do you have to put batteries in first for the film lever on the right side to work because I can't turn mines even though it's on A?
Brilliant camera. Fantastic review too. Time to dust it down and shoot some street 👍🏻 Great shots at the end too. Thanks for sharing
where did you buy the green shutter release button ? I absolutely wanti it for my A1!!
Can the A1 shoot in full auto mode? And if yes then which is the best for full auto mode between the A1 and the AE-1 program?
Hi, please tell me about the strap you are using and these extensions.
Where did you get that shutter release button? Or one that works with the A1
Can't dedice between Canon A-1 and Nikon FE2.
What do you people suggest?
I love the A1, I got one for 85 bucks with an 50mm 1:1,4, a Tokina Zoom and the fast shutter batterie grip. I‘m really happy, but the om2 and the x700 are favorits as well. 😁🙃😉
I've been meaning to find one. It's so dang hard to find at a camera store!! Any tips?
What film do you buy for this camera..
do you have a link?
I am a beginner
I finally bought a Minolta SRT 101 yesterday, I always wanted a Canon A-1 but I was planning to spend as little money as I could, and I did. Canon A-1, you're next.
Is cleaning the inside of a 📷 expensive at a repair shop? Cause I got me a Minolta xg1 and it's dirty inside but I don't wanna touch it.
what type of film is being used in the first few example shots with that sepia tone?
Hey man I love your stuff but I was wondering what settings you had on those photos you took. If you have any notes that would be greatly appreciated. Love your work
You need to enrol on a photography course to understand light metering and the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and film speed. You simply cannot replicate settings from others' shots to apply to your own camera.
what film did you use at the end of the video for the examples?
How do you know that you have the right or wrong exposure for the canon a 1?
What film did you use for the sample shots? Thanks!
but what was used to film this video tho because even this quality is 🔥
