  • On Saturday, Steven Craig said his two dogs dug a hole under a fence and escaped. They made it nearly half a mile to a house on Wright Road. That's where they were later shot for attacking the homeowner's chickens. A Moore County man is upset with a neighbor who shot and killed his family's dogs. The dogs reportedly got out and attacked the neighbor's chickens. On Saturday, Steven Craig said his two dogs dug a hole under a fence and escaped.
They made it nearly half a mile to a house on Wright Road. That's where they were later shot for attacking the homeowner's chickens. Craig said he spent hours looking for his 9-year-old lab, Max, and his grandson's 8-month-old Australian Shepherd/lab mix puppy. His son was continuing the search late Saturday night when he heard gunfire.
"He heard two gunshots, fearing that it might have been a neighbor shooting the dogs," Craig said.
According to a report from the Moore County Sheriff's Office, the homeowner came home, heard his pigs squealing in his backyard, saw chicken feathers in the front yard and grabbed his rifle. He told police two dogs were in his backyard attacking the chickens, so he shot them. The report stated 18 chickens were killed or missing. "If they had time enough to kill 18 chickens, he had enough time to chase them away," Craig said. Under state law, property owners are within their rights to kill a dog that is killing poultry. Craig doesn't dispute that, but he said it could have been handled differently. "I feel he could have warned them," Craig said. When WRAL's Shelle Jackson went to the chicken owners' home, chickens were roaming free in the front yard and there was a hole in the fence. A person who answered the door at the home where the chickens were kept on Tuesday declined to comment. Craig said he's an animal lover, and he feels bad about the chickens, but wishes there could have been a non-violent resolution. "Dogs are pets, chickens are livestock," Craig said. "I could have paid to replace those chickens. But you can't replace the life of the dog."

@@jasminetorre2384 The dog is property according to the law. They should have controlled that dog. The chickens and the dogs are equal importance. If the dog owner states he could replace the chickens, then I say the dog can be replaced. It is just a dog. They may be your "baby" to you, and you are entitled to your opinion, but to me and according to the law, dogs are just property. I could easily say my chickens are my babies as well too.

That man had no duty to warn the dogs. Killing 18 chickens is a reason to put them down anyway. It wasn’t an accident, the dogs intentionally killed them. Also, the dog ow we has no idea how the chicken owner felt about his chicken. He could have named each one and raised them from chics. People can be so thoughtless and self-centered…

January 1 2020, two dogs, a siberian husky and a pit mix, were attacking my 73 year old aunts cows. One on the ground with the skin torn off the tail and bloodied hind quarters, and the other in a corner of the barn fence with my aunt trying to fend them off and protect her cows. She call me to come over, I was minutes away, and help. When I got there I tried to shoe them away but they were having too much fun. Dogs being dogs. I asked her if she wanted me to put them down and she said, after a delay, yes. The owners, who I found out later had not contained their dogs 2 times before, sued me because they said I did it to purposely cause harm to them. They then started one lie after another. Short story I'm in more that 26 thousand in legal fees after over 2 and a half years in court. Evil, lying, pieces of trash that won't take care of their responsibilities and want to sue for a money grab. And yes Im a dog lover I have three that sleep in the bed with me and 2 that go to work with me every day. Take care of your responsibilities and don't lay your lack of care for those responsibilities on others that are left to deal with it. Oh and if your in Cordova, Tn. and you need a chiropractor, one whose last name starts with h is a real piece of trash.

It would be absolutely foolish to attempt to physically stop two large dogs, unknown to you, that are in the middle of a "livestock" killing frenzy. They can , and sometimes do, stop to attack a person. Dog's owners are as ignorant and irresponsible as they come. Zero accountability for their own negligence. Furthermore, livestock owners are often just as fond of their own animals.

I have no sympathy for idiots who can't control their beasts. Working breeds need a lot of space, a lot of stimulation, and a lot of discipline. They will readily kill other animals out of sheer boredom unless properly restrained. The jackass set his dogs up for failure by keeping them in a small backyard space and obviously did not train them to leave small animals alone. This is the price of negligence.
