Now that line got me laughing my fucking ass off boy tonight was one of a kind too bad he’s gone I used to Love every show or movie he was in because he was so freaking funny
My favorite exchange. I use this to this day. Only I exchange Yacht for some location. Makes me laugh. Especially, when you see the look on their face.
You’re right tonight was the best especially when they said down and the lamp is in the way they kept trying to go around with their heads looking around and then Ted knight just Throws it out of the way and that shit made me laugh so hard when I first seen it
"I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it, felt I owed it to them." If you don't get it... He killed them for their own good. And that's not really possible.
Ted Knight/ Judge Smails is the BEST part of the movie. For years I've fast forwarded to his lines in the film. He makes this movie. "There's a brown Audi parked in my parking space, I want it towed immediately. Oooh Porterhouse, look at the wax build up on these shoes!!"
My mom's brother is a judge (retired now) and has belonged to an upscale country club for decades, even before he became a judge. He's a good guy, but i'm sure this movie scene has been played out in similar ways in real life. Classic.
Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Rodney Dangerfield may have gotten top billing, but Ted Knight was in a league of his own in this role and this movie. Top notch performance. Top notch!
lou costello split everything 60/40 in favor of bud abbot. he insisted it be this way because (to paraphrase) comics are a dime a dozen, but a good straight man is very hard to find.
Best villian in all movie history. And has said one word on the Judge's boss 3 piece suit and deep blue tie?!? That outfit is more intimidating than Darth Vader's.
We had the video on BetaMax back in 1981. I always kept rewinding & rewatching the scenes with Ted Knight. My parents & siblings would always laugh their butts off. He really was the funniest character in the movie.
The movie was amazing; Ted Knight made it shine as the stodgy country club snobby judge. “Spaulding…get dressed you’re playing golf today…YOU’RE PLAYING GOLF AND YOU’RE GOING TO LIKE IT!!!…yeaah I’LL GIVE YA ASTHMA!!!” “I have a little poem I’d like to read in honor of this occasion if I may…SPAULDING GET UR FOOT OFF THE BOAT!!!”
When you think about it, Judge Smails is a pretty lenient guy. He catches Danny sleeping with his niece, and gives him a scholarship the next day. And a fresca!
+Donald Boyajian I know it's a comedy but I always feel a great sadness for the Ted Knight character. Sure he's a neurotic mess and acts like he's above everyone. But all he really wants is simple compliance and respect for club rules...for everyone's sake not just his. You get stubborn people like that who you automatically think are miserable elitist shits but a single gesture like this can make you do a complete 180 on your attitude towards them. You know what they're about...and guys like the Dangerfield character who you might think are the life and soul of the party...are actually no fun to be around in real life. They're a different kind of arrogance and they don't a give a shit about anyone but themselves...they just want attention and if you don't give it to them they'll make your life a misery. They're unbelievably obnoxious...it's tragic that things end the way they do for the judge...because I'd lie down on a track for someone who gave me a pass like that...
One of the best comedy movies ever. Good, . . . Very good. “You, you are no gentlemen” , “I’m not door knob either.” “. . .I'm no slouch myself” “Don't sell yourself short Judge, you're a tremendous slouch. “Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know.” And he says, “Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.” So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.”
One of the most genius scenes in any movie. Perfectly cast, brilliantly directed. The writers (Brian Doyle-Murray, Harold Ramis, Douglas Kenney) got it almost to perfection - and then the acting talent perfected it. Micheal O'Keefe's wary hesitation at Judge Smail's offer of scholarship should never be discounted. One of the better performances in this movie.
Not only the best scene in the movie, but one of the best scenes in any comedy. Ted Knight was goddam brilliant playing cluelessly pompous and unctuous characters.
Did anyone ever notice that throught the film, Judge Smails says Danny wants to be something different. First he says he wants to be a judge (when Smails says "the world needs ditch diggers too). Then in the marina scene his wife says "you're the young man who wants to be in the senate". And here he says "I think you can still become general someday"
totally agree with the oscar note...Knight was perfect in this ...I laugh just thinking about his character ,and have watche d this film at least 10 times.
Ted Knight would continue his comedy streak by playing cartoonist Henry Rush, alongside Nancy Dussault, (Muriel Rush) Deborah Van Valkenburgh, (Jackie Rush) Lydia Cornell, (Sarah Rush) and Jim J. Bullock (Monroe Ficus), on "Too Close of Comfort" for the first three seasons on ABC and then in syndication for the remainder of its run.
At this point, Danny accomplished what he had initially set out to do by securing funding for college...so what possibly could have been his motivation to throw it all away later in a ridiculous contest? Funny one-liners aside, this movie never made a point.
I literally forgot Judge Smails was a judge for a moment when he mentioned the "gas chamber" line upon first seeing this movie. I legitimately thought that Smails was a Nazi.
"You know, I'm having a party this weekend on my yacht. Are you busy?"
"No plans!"
"Great!.. How'd you like to mow my lawn?"
Frampton mows the lawn!
Ted Knight was a natural. A fine actor.
You’re right tonight was the best especially when they said down and the lamp is in the way they kept trying to go around with their heads looking around and then Ted knight just Throws it out of the way and that shit made me laugh so hard when I first seen it
Yep it basically became the Ted Knight show not the mtm show!!!
"......didn't wanna do it; felt I owed it to them."
Quite possibly the funniest one liner in movie history.
I've quoted that line way too often for years. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
"How about a Fresca?"
YES! (Other than the Bishop who says, drunkenly, "There is no God!")
The instantaneous and unbridled rage that Ted Knight unleashes on that lamp is beyond fucking words.
I used to think Dangerfield was the man in this flick, but Ted Knight's really got the most quotable lines
Like 4-5 great comedic actors all hit their peak in this movie.
Tedknight is amazing.
Teamwork made the dream work!👌
*_”You’ll get nothing and like it”_*
I still use this line to this day
Bushwood? A dump???
@@jtaco4101wish we got more time with Ted Knight, sucks he passed just 6 years later.
A goddamn comedic genius.. His facial expressions, in every line he has, his laughs. Hilarious
0:33 The lamp scene makes me scream with laughter every time .
That one and also the scene where he finds Danny in bed with his niece and try to kill him with his golf club...lol..Love that scene.
So damn funny!
Courtesy Of Not Reviewing What Happened YESTERDAY!
My dad's reaction whenever i made him mad.
*Comedy GOLD.*
Best comedy line in movie history.
He did it for their own good...
"I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it, felt I owed it to them."
If you don't get it... He killed them for their own good. And that's not really possible.
Thanks Captain Obvious

Yeah no shit
As the old saying goes, what does in fact kill you, makes you stronger.
I mean, it’s possible if those guys messed with the wrong person.

In the Caddyshack documentary, Chevy Chase claimed Ted Night was the funniest and most talented actor on set.
"That's fine leather. I want them stripped and buffed with a fine shammy."
Is Porterhouse the Colored Boy?
@@thegadflygang5381 Yeah, I think so.
@lysanderofsparta3708 same guy in the dinghy with the fishing pole and bug eyes. Didn't say alot but a memorable part
Gambling is illegal at Bushwood Sir, and I never slice!
DAMN!!!!
MKillBill
"I OWE YOU NOTHING!"
"Hey Smails! Thousand bucks you miss that putt!"
Mr Wang, no offense....
I love how when he turns his chair round he bashes his leg on the desk.
Happens every time. I had to buy an entirely new desk with an open frame because I got sick of that.
@1:56, that has to be the most epic face-drop i've ever seen. Ted Knight is my favorite part of caddyshack!
I never really noticed the face-drop until this post and then started dying when he did again at 2:06.
My mom's brother is a judge (retired now) and has belonged to an upscale country club for decades, even before he became a judge. He's a good guy, but i'm sure this movie scene has been played out in similar ways in real life. Classic.

Top notch performance. Top notch!
If you say so Ace...I wouldn't go that far but don't forget to get your free bowl of soup
" Sit down Danny. "
judge smails is possibly the funniest character in movie history
He took himself so seriously that's what made him funny
lou costello split everything 60/40 in favor of bud abbot. he insisted it be this way because (to paraphrase) comics are a dime a dozen, but a good straight man is very hard to find.
Best villian in all movie history.

Love that line
“My niece is the kind of girl that has a certain…zest for living” 😂
19 people don’t have a certain zest for living.
Ted Knight ruled! And Dangerfield was such a great foil to him.
The psychotic swiping of the lamp. PMSL

I love Judge Snails. He stands for Goodness.
When you think about it, Judge Smails is a pretty lenient guy. He catches Danny sleeping with his niece, and gives him a scholarship the next day. And a fresca!

That and he didn't want it getting out his niece was promiscuous, although everyone already knew. lol
If Danny were black or brown, he'd be getting his own trip to the gas chamber. NO SCHOLARSHIP FOR YOU!!!!
lol yeah, after he backhandedly threatened to put him in the gas chamber lmao
@@ryan49er1 she's a female version of a stud.
Every breath Ted Knight takes in this movie is funny. Then he turns on the afterburners and he causes tears of laughter.
"Are you for Goodness.......or Badness?"
Ted Knight was EPIC!!!!
thanks for the laughs Ted Knight and may you rest in peace
You're right! lol:)
Of all the great, GREAT characters in this movie, Smails is my favorite
Vince McMahon I really liked Ted but Rodney was my favorite the worst would’ve been Chevy he wasn’t that funny in the movie I didn’t think.
Smails seems to have high BP.
One of the best comedy movies ever.

Anger and humor have a special relationship.
I think most people can remember a time or two where they just went absolutely medieval on an inanimate object like that
Can't see a Fresca anywhere without shouting out, "How 'bout a Fresca?"
The lamp!! 😂😂😂
When his knee hits the desk 🤣
Whoever the Casting Director was in this movie must've been a genius.
you don't get this kind of subtle humor anymore
“How about a Fresca?”
🤣😆🤣
Sit down danny 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ted Knight actually had cancer by the time Caddyshack was filmed he was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1977 after the Marry Tyler Moore Show.
Ted Knight should have won an Oscar for this movie!!

think he says "a gentleman" here.
Danny keeps telling him stories so that he can help Danny go to college.
judge smails, IMO, is the best character in a movie ever.
Maybe. In any case, that line is the best comedy line in movie history (in my opinion). He did it for their own good.
I couldn't agree more
Well just ask my grandson spalding, he and I are regular pals
How bout a Fresca? Mmm, Mmmmmmm?
One of the all time great scences.
Sit down, Danny..
Knight's face drop @ 2:05 is amazing
Sit down, Danny.
How many times in your younger life did an older person BS you similar to this scene ? Lol
The name Danny Noonan gets O'Keefe on any country club in the country. Even today
O'keefe?
Noonan looks stoned out of his mind in this scene.
let's see how you look after spending the night sleeping on a bench in the caddyshack. cut'em a break. LOL!
Ted Knight - The real star of Caddyshack?
A certain.....zest for living
My niece has a certain zest for living😂😂😂
I'm already sitting sir😂😂😂😂
Murray, Chase, Dangerfield....Ted Knight is the funniest guy in this movie and it ain't even close!
I would love a Fresca right now.
The lamp returns to the desk somehow.
good observation
Great observation I never noticed that before 😂
It never left the desk. It was only pushed to the side. You can see the lampshade shaking slightly on the left of the shot.
The look on Smails face when he spins around and hits the desk kills me every time.
0:34 LOL!!!!
Brilliantly acted scene. This movie would have been absolute garbage w/o Ted Knight.
Fabulous
Great clip!
Funniest movie ever made. The lamp!!!
Smails is the best character in the movie
Hilarious clip .... I laugh every time .....
And after that whole speech, he really rewards Danny for doing something "bad". Good old blackmail.
totally agree with the oscar note...Knight was perfect in this ...I laugh just thinking about his character ,and have watche d this film at least 10 times.

"Yes sir.....Im your pal..." LOL!

Classic exercise in schmoozing!
I didn't no I was that popular u made a movie with me in it
Ted Knight could've won best supporting actor for playing judge Smailes.
Gotta love judge smails:) considering my last name is smailes!:)
Felt I owed it to them lmfao
Classic
I remember they did this on Family Guy once XD
Oh yeah, I remember that scene. Well, we're waiting! lol
also when family guys takes off shawshank redemption
Judge Smails: MONROOOOEEEE!!!
Judge Smails: MCFIDDISHHHHHHH!!!!!
I have always wondered what would have happened if he said that he wasn't his pal.

At this point, Danny accomplished what he had initially set out to do by securing funding for college...so what possibly could have been his motivation to throw it all away later in a ridiculous contest? Funny one-liners aside, this movie never made a point.

That's Ted Baxter. Minus Murray, Lou, Georgette, Mary and Sue Ann.
Nothing like a girl who has a zest for living.
How 'bout a Fresca?
Fresca. soda for old wasps.
What exactly is he trying to manipulate Danny into doing? Cheating?
