  • The new Fox Proframe RS helmet is aimed at the aggressive mountain biker and eMTB rider who wants the latest features, tech and design. We reviewed the last generation Fox Proframe a couple years back and really liked the helmet overall, but felt there were a few areas other riders would like to see improved. It seems Fox Racing took that feedback well, as the new Proframe RS helmet sports some impressive styling, the new MIPS Integra Split protection system and yes, more adjustability! From the visor to the fit, the new Fox Proframe RS claims to be the helmet your head deserves. Let’s Dissect this new DH-certified lid and share our impressions so far.
    THE TECH
    SAFETY
    Earlier this year we headed down to Fox Racing HQ in Irvine, California for a Behind the Brands feature. While we were there, we got ourselves a couple of the new Proframe RS helmets to begin testing in preparation for this launch. We also got to meet up with Shaun Ryan, Product Manager for Fox Bike and Moto divisions. Shaun was kind enough to sacrifice a helmet for us a cut one apart so we could take a better look at the industry’s first use of the MIPS Integra Split system.
    MIPS Integra Split takes slip plane technology to the next level as there are now two layers of foam of different densities and types to provide even more protection. The inner liner is EPP and is designed to take multiple low-speed hits, will offer protection from the more common impacts riders see. Attached via woofers (elastomers) that can move 360 degrees, this separated inner EPP liner offers rotational impact damping as well as softer foam for sub-concussive forces.
    The outer layer is made of EPS, which is found on other helmets on the market. It is designed to crack when it absorbs impacts from larger, high-speed impacts that could cause greater single-hit trauma. Combining the EPP and EPS should give more effective protection across a wider range of impact velocities.
    FIT
    Improving the adjustability from the preceding Fox Proframe helmet, the new Proframe RS claims to have 624 fit combinations available. There are three sizes available in the Proframe RS and each size now includes a BOA Fit System. Further adjustment comes from the four-step adjustable cradle located at the back of the helmet. This allows users to fine-tune where the BOA system snugs up around the head. Different layer cheek pads are also available to ensure a proper fit. You can give Fox’s “Fit Guide” video a watch here: • FOX MTB | PROFRAME RS ...
    Snapping the helmet on is easy thanks to a magnetic Fidlock buckle system. We’ve grown to like the Fidlock system as it’s easy to operate one-handed, with gloves on and makes for a quick removal process after the ride.
    FEATURES
    An adjustable visor allows the new Fox Proframe RS to offer sun or debris protection at various angles while also allowing for goggle storage on long climbs.
    Another neat feature on the new visor is the removable GoPro mount for an action camera. It’s easy to use, keeps your footage stable and allows for a seamless application of the mount.
    THE WOLF’S FIRST IMPRESSION
    Over the course of this summer, we’ve had about six different riders in the new Proframe RS helmet. While most of the riders now love the helmet, it did seem that about 25-30% of riders had an awkward “Getting to know you” phase. Some also noted a tendency for the BOA system to fall towards the center of the helmet when loose, blocking their head from entering the helmet and requiring the spare hand to push it out the way.
    With the new design of the helmet and adjustability, it takes a bit more time to really get the Proframe RS dialed in. At least it could, depending on your head shape and size. I’m a 56cm head and went with my standard medium size and felt the crown was pretty accurately sized, and Robert with the same size head agreed. Cheek pads and inner liner pads were played with, and I felt like I could go either way in terms of thicker or thinner cheek pads depending on if I was hitting the bike park or going for a longer eBike mission. With the thicker pads fitted, the helmet feels more secure and downhill-like, whereas longer days in the saddle may be served by a looser fit on the sides and more reliance on the BOA system...

    Great first look into the tech behind this helmet. With how light full-face helmets have become, why would you ever want to wear a half shell? It only takes one crash to smash your jaw on any given ride.

    The timing is perfect for this release for me, I currently have a Stage and a Gambit and love and hate things about them both, I am hoping this will be the best of both of those. Riding in the south heat management is critical and that is where the stage comes up short compared to the Garmbit. The Gambit though doesn't have fidlock and just doesn't seem to be as comfortable as the Stage with its padding.

    I hope one day they make them in XXL or above size (65cm-66cm). I tried the XL for a week and the fit was so excessively tight that putting it on destroys my ears and gave me migraines at every use with no room for coms or sunglasses. I genuinely like how the helmet looks including its features, but the lack of size for the truly big-headed is a major bummer.

    I've crashed and busted 2 of these helmets now, and have had no lasting injuries. They cost $$$ but its worth it to be able to walk away from crashes. Totally worth it in my opinion, great helmets.
    Light and airy enough to wear for trail rides too, I rarely grab my half shell anymore. For the added safety the full face offers, and as comfortable as it is, a great all round option as well as being optimal for enduro/DH.
    For what it's worth, one of my crashes was an OTB onto rocks head first at 30kmh, and the other was at 40+kmh down a 1m rock drop where I landed flat on my back and had a rock contact square on the back of the helmet. If you're thinking about buying this helmet, do it.

    My head is 60cm, 7 1/2 in hat size. The large proframe RS is just a lil bit to big even with it at its tightest.
    I would say the Sumyt in L fits a hair tighter than the Mhdrn in a L but is still not snug to be a comfortable fit for me.
    I also tried on Medium for both of those RS models which fit just a lil to tight, almost a perfect fit. Only problem was the shell was too small and almost ripped my ears off removing the helmet.
    My solution would be a medium inside head liner with a large shell.
    Ended up Getting the the original proframe in a L. Fits perfect

    have the exact same Proframe RS in a medium, but having to return it. Im a 56cm head, and also wear a Fox rampage Carbon in medium. The sizing difference was noticeable, the Proframe RS was massive even with the boa at full tightened state. In addition, when compared to a couple of mates who got new helmets last week (Smith Mainline light enduro lid and another brand similar) the minimal padding in the Proframe RS actually makes it quite an uncomfortable helmet too. For the money it cost (£310) it felt a bit...overpriced. Super disappointed in it if Im honest. Great looking lid, but not comfortable for me, or for a couple friends who tried it on (for ref one wears a large proframe...and he found the medium RS roomy.

      @TheLoamWolf  Před rokem +1

      That's interesting, Drew is a 56cm and after dialing in the internal pads, was able to get it feeling snug. Perhaps your particular helmet came with incorrect thickness pads inside that are meant for another size?

      @@TheLoamWolf I think anyone with experience with these type of helmets knows the pads don't do much for fitmet for these helmets. In particular the cheek pads etc are extremely soft and compress to almost 0 thickness. The helmet industry is definitely dropping the ball with fitment for helmets. There needs to be a size between Small and Medium.

    I tried these on last week and the medium was way too big. I'm a 55-56 usually in motorcycle lids. The small was ok but even with the BOA as tight as it would go I still felt there was a lot of up-down movement (ie grab the chin bar and lift it) which didn't change even with the thickest cheek pads. I really wanted to buy it but after trying it I walked away. Has anyone managed to stop the up-down movement on theirs? I feel like it would be easy to leave my chin exposed in the event of a crash or for the lid to move down over my eyes a bit in a sustained bumpy descent.

    • @alexh.4068
      @alexh.4068 Před 8 měsíci +1

      These helmets are super sloppy. I think even in this video you can see how much wiggle there is when he puts it on. But that is how these enduro lids are, soft padding giving the illusion of plushness/protection but the foam is entirely too compressible. With REAL dh helmets, the pads are a lot more firm.. and the way you get the helmet on and off your head is by creating a wider opening by prying open the chin bar by pulling laterally on the straps. It is all a trade off in the end though!

      Thank you so much for the donation. Greatly appreciated. Sadly you are right on the cusp between sizing. You could likely go either way with pad adjustment inside and honestly the size/shape of your face and cheeks will also have a lot to do with it. I’d say if you have a narrow face maybe try small and if you’ve got a fuller face Medium. But I’d just try to but from a shop that allows returns. Or better yet, buy both sizes try them on back to back and return the one that doesn’t feel best.
