  • Today we're taking a tour through a hyperbaric chamber, also known as a 'decompression' or 'recompression' chamber. Nick Derutter is not only a Technical Diver Instructor Trainer but also a Hyperbaric Chamber Operator with hundreds of hours on the unit we're visiting today.

    Cool video. It reminds me of submarine school back in the early 80’s when they would test us for claustrophobia. We had to sit 4 or 5 per-side crammed in, no hearing protection and the lights turning on and off. As the depressurized the chamber, they had balloons that would expand and pop. They would tell us “these are your lungs, don’t try to hold your breath!”
    The next day we noticed a few guys had dropped out of sub school. 🤣

    Please can you do a video of you running the chamber, as if there were a diver inside having dove a said depth, for a said amount of time. Show how you break down the timing between vents, and stops. Thank you, really enjoy the channel

    • @DiveSAGA
      @DiveSAGA  Před rokem +1

      I'll look into that. It's a fine line between showing that all in a video and people confusing it as a substitute for proper training so I'm always careful to include too many specific instructions. Moreover, running the chamber is quite expensive. I'll give some thought to how I can turn it into an interesting video that still leaves it obvious that proper training is required! Thank you for the suggestion! 👊

    Always wanted to know how a chamber works and this was very informative. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Had a question. I have heard that getting time in a chamber is very expensive. How expensive is it compared to when someone has a DAN insurance?

    • @DiveSAGA
      @DiveSAGA  Před 3 lety +3

      It really depends from location to location. Here it's about 4-500 USD per hour but that is on the low end. If you carry DAN insurance or similar, they usually cover the whole treatment.

    • @collectionlife558
      @collectionlife558 Před 3 lety +2

      These chambers do not enter the sea but mimic it where the pressure created inside them thins the oxygen gas where oxygen then gets introduced to the blood plasma directly

      What u are describing is a bell, they have large amounts of air being pumped into them which is greater then the force of the water on the outside, as u go deeper the water line also goes up till theres no air left. Which is why they commonly go between 60-350ft

    Aloha Nick, I have a question for you. With respect to a hyperbaric chamber, are bar and PSI 2 different ways of measuring the same thing? Like, fundamentally are you just bringing the chamber up to a particular PSI level to replicate a particular bar depth?

    • @DiveSAGA
      @DiveSAGA  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Yes, bar is simply the metric way of expressing pressure, the way psi is the imperial measurement of pressure.

    My son is receiving HBOT, I go into the chamber with him . They have my son wear a helmet that the oxygen goes into. It was our 3rd session and while in there I was feeling like I couldn’t breathe, dizzy and started feeling agitated. My son began acting drunk . The first two sessions we were fine , felt relaxed and very good after the session. Is it possible the oxygen wasn’t right? Is it harmful for me to be in there with no oxygen besides what’s in the chamber ( my son has the helmet on) I don’t. I told the tech upon exiting, my daughter was in the waiting room and said she could hear an alarm going off and the tech was chatting with a girl in another room . I’m concerned they aren’t doing what they are supposed to. The oxygen level in the chamber was reading 30

    Can you sleep while in the chamber?

    • @DiveSAGA
      @DiveSAGA  Před 11 měsíci

      Very good question. Technically speaking you certainly could, however: we want the patient to breathe oxygen deliberately as it's their "medicine" and that's best done while awake so they can take nice big, deliberate breaths. Secondly, if a patient is asleep, it's harder to assess their symptoms. Therefore we keep patients awake throughout treatments.
