      Five

    • @poeticpolecat
      @poeticpolecat Před 3 lety +6

      I was flummoxed for a strategy until you put them outside of the frame, then I thought approaching it in layers where instead of connecting the piece, you move it ever so slightly so it sits atop its connecting piece so that some pieces are on the table and some are stacked one layer above. This would allow you to see piece shapes more easily to adjust and move them. F5ve out of 5ive

    • @hackwolfin

      I don't think I would use a different strategy, but I do think it would be fun to have off to family members and watch them try.

    • @waynemv
      @waynemv Před 3 lety +8

      Yes. A potential strategy is to make a block of pieces ten pieces long and two or three pieces wide. It doesn't have to be a rectangle. Position that block in about the middle of the puzzle. Move it up/down so that number of empty spaces above and below the block are each multiples of FIVE. (If that can't be done, try a differently shaped block.) Then repeat that process to divide the empty spaces on each side into smaller regions that are also multiples of five. Although this is not guaranteed to work every time, it should help one stumble on a viable solution significantly faster than completely random trial and error.

    • @hopegold883
      @hopegold883 Před 3 lety +6

      Yes! Which is a mark of Karen’s genius (top FIVE percentile???).
      There are other strategies, some commented above. BUT, All this talk of what the people who made the puzzle intended is interesting. Karen thought outside the box (pun intended) and found a real world way to do it. That is true genius, which is on another level from strategizing specially.
      Finally, I think if it were just laying out in her desk, as she suggested, in the course of “randomly” fitting pieces in, she would have devised a strategy for doing it specially.

    • @davidlove236
      @davidlove236 Před 3 lety +10

      As a former math teacher, I endorse the metaphor! Karen would still get five out of a possible five points on a quiz from me for this solution.
      That said, as others have noted, the material or finish could have easily been something else. While this may not have been the intended method, the makers definitely at least left it as a Plan B for the puzzle solver.

    Even if they wanted to still make the puzzle out of wood, they could’ve cut a bunch of the same ones, but mixed and matched the set pieces so the pieces wouldn’t have been from the same piece of wood. Like cut them all, then package it so each set has like one A5, B8, etc etc, but not from the same piece of wood.

    This is called a pentomino puzzle. I have a lot of these. There are actually multiple solutions! So, yes you may have “cheated” for one solution, but you can always do it again and solve it in a different way! No need to turn it upside down. Five!

    • @GloomTart
      @GloomTart Před 3 lety +4

      This variation is a little easieir than a traditional pentomino puzzle I guess, since the puzzle piece shape limits which edges can be lined up together, and the fact that there is a distinct front and back for each piece also really limits your options. True pentomino puzzles always give me headaches so maybe I should try this one :P

      @@richardfarrer5616 I actually bought the smoothed out version online earlier this week. I was wondering if the puzzle edges do limit the number of solutions, and I think they do, because two 'ins' and two 'outs' can't fit together if the pieces have puzzle edges. So actually some positions of the pieces would be possible smoothed and aren't possible in this case. Eg 2:43 she demonstrates attempting to fit two together when the ins and outs don't line up when they would if it were smoothed.

    5:13 All of them are letters! All twelve possible pentominoes (groups of five connected squares, which these pieces all are if you ignore the jigsaw ins/outs) have a one-letter name. They're usually remembered by their spelling out "FLIP 'N TUVWXYZ".
    Also: _Blokus_ is a perennial. I still remember when it first came out and I feel old knowing it turns twenty this year! It's still one of my favorite strategy games. I used to bring it to game nights at college; a friend of mine would invariably crack out their Sean Connery impression: " _Blokus_ ?! You didn't drag poor _Blokus_ along, did you?"

    oooohh i(f) I designed th(i)s puzzle and then someone went and sol(v)ed it using a complet(e)ly different method I didn't intend, I'd be kinda miffed lol. But it'd be my own fault! You exposed a flaw in the design, now they just need to fix it.

    Five. Not a problem. When you showed the pieces early on, the way you did it of following the grain on the back was the way I thought about. Gotta do what you gotta do to get it done. .

    theoretically the puzzle has an image on it like other puzzle, only this image can not be seen very well. at other puzzles you can use the image. at this one it is a bit blurry, but that does not mean you can not use the image.

    In my view, this solution was just thinking outside of the box. I might have quite enjoyed picking away at this brain teaser, for five minutes here and there, but Karen is in quite a unique position where she is filming and editing multiple videos and is also expected to finish in record time. So this process worked for her. 👌🏼

    I think this is the solution and good strategy for lvl 10 puzzle. And putting pieces randomly is not what you should do here.

    Definitely flipping it was a great idea! It was still a challenge even with looking at the grain. I like the concept of using it as a desk toy!

    Actually I would have flipped it over because this way you can see the shape of the piece way better. Think this is part of the brainteaser.
    You could finish by not turning over, but why should you?
    Five 😉

    I sort of think it is cheating, in a way. When you said you didn't want to spend a long time trying to figure it out, that just cemented that your thing is jigsaw puzzles, not brain teaser puzzles.

    I think your way of doing it is as much "cheating" as looking at the picture when doing a normal puzzle. So no, I say this isn't cheating.
    Doing it without that would probably take like "5" hours

    The problem of looking at the wood grain is that then it becomes one of those mini puzzles that aren't that compelling to do again. A pieces puzzle is a challenge to be done again, a 20 piece puzzle is not once is done one time.

    I was thinking about doing it upside down, not for the woodgrain, but to eliminate the false sides of the "five" pieces, making it easier to see the pieces together.

  • @paivansade
    @paivansade Před 3 lety

    this seems to be based on Pentomino or Penta puzzle which I actually had as a kid which is a set of all unique 5-square combinations that you are able to make, obviously without any innies and outies. so in the original you would not get any duplications, but on the other hand you could easily flip a shape over, cause they had no obvious "right" sides. the original challenge was a big rectangle, but there was a booklet challenging you to form other shapes as well.
    my first immediate though for a strategy for this one would have been to copy the shapes to paper, color each peace for visibility, and play around with that, but at first I didn't realize they had a "wrong" side. so your approach would have been my next though ;D and looking for hints in the woodgrain is just a natural consequence :)

    My bf surprised me today for Valentine's Day with a puzzle he had ordered that has our favorite picture of us together on it!!! I already started it today and got maybe 35% done, ugh it's hard! I asked how many pieces because it didn't say on the box. He said he thinks it was over 500, I was like ohhh man, lol. He knows I've been watching a lot of "puzzle videos" lately (hehe, *KAREN'S,* of course!) and she inspired me to get the 3D Color Sphere puzzle, so he knows that after I did THAT one how much I really liked it and miss doing puzzles, so he got me this for V-Day. 😄❤️
