  • The bullmastiff can be a great dog breed for families!
    The origins of the Bullmastiff are unclear. In the 18th century, in some areas of England, the Old English Mastiff and English Bulldog were commonly bred to produce dogs for work guarding people and their property. By the beginning of the 20th century this breed was in widespread use as an aid to gamekeepers in the control of poaching.They were bred by gamekeepers for strength, size and speed using a cross of the tough, heavy and aggressive Bulldog of the 19th century with the large, strong, less aggressive Mastiff. As a result, the Bullmastiff is known as the Gamekeeper's Night Dog.
    The Bullmastiff was recognized as a breed by The Kennel Club in 1924.

    Videos will be posted to show not only his physical growth, but his behavioral changes, obedience level changes, and our overall experience with the Bullmastiff breed.
    This will hopefully help anyone interested in the Bullmastiff breed by showing what to expect at very specific times all throughout a Bullmastiff's life!
    Although this will be more specifically about the Bullmastiff breed, the videos should give a very general idea about what to expect at certain ages of many different dog breeds.

    They are indeed a great breed . have been a dog breeder for almost 50 years .twenty years breeding bull mastiffs. one thing that is NOT mentioned here is they are a GUARD breed. They are NOT for novice owners but for owners that are knowledgable and are prepared to be the alpha. This is NOT a suitable dog for the majority of people , Unless properly trained and socialised they can be aggressive towards other dogs and animals and potentially dangerous with the wrong owner. having said that they are highly intelligent generally great with children and devoted to their family . But they DO NEED FIRM TRAINING FROM DAY ONE and i advise anyone thinking of getting one to do their homework as it is not a breed i would recommend for many people unless they know what they are doing

      Hahahaha! Ok I had to laugh bcuz my BM loves everything and everyone. Doesn’t even bark when strangers come knocking. I did wonder if perhaps there’s such a thing as over socializing a pup? When Archie came home to us at 11weeks we got started right away on socializing and didn’t stop. He was constantly introduced to different situations/people and animals. Now at age 18 months he is 150lbs of pure love! He loves people. But I do wonder if my socializing him so well means that now he just welcomes all humans as friend not foe. He’s the epitome of gentle giant but our 30lb terrier does more guarding than Archie!

      @kaycamille1544 Před 2 měsíci

      @@jomoland it is a different scenario when you just have one in a family setting. It all depends on the dogs individual personality too. When you have an alpha male or an alpha female for that matter and have many. I had 13! It is a different ball game. You can socialite them as puppies and two alpha male will not tolerate each other you can take that as fact ! All mine were guard dogs. That is their natural propensity. My first dog years ago was a Rottweiler. Fine around people and other small dogs but if he spotted another large breed like himself he would see it as a challenge and would fight if I gave him the chance. That’s why I say with these breeds you need to know what you are doing and understand dogs Pysche or don’t get one.

    I can’t make up my mind between the bullmastiff or Boerboel. Both seem so amazing. How is the energy ? is this dog protective but also laid back?

    • @bullmastiffnd9784
      @bullmastiffnd9784  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I was also interested in a boerboel in the past. Maybe one day I'll get one. In general, they seem much more intense and have more overall energy than a bullmastiff. My previous dog was a doberman pinscher. We had him before we had kids so I could devote a lot of my time to him and his exercise requirements, etc. This time around with two kids in a little bit busier life in general we wanted a dog with lower energy. A bullmastiff once matured fits that. They can still get up and go but nothing like a Doberman Pinscher. After all my research a bullmastiff seemed to be a little easier overall to raise than a boerboel. I'm happy with my decision. Maybe one day I'll go the boerboel route though!

    It is a shame I do not have a video of the unneutered males in my household. We are taking about father and sons. Given the chance to get in the same proximity they would want to fight to the death . This video shows the best side and If you have one yes you may only see the best side. But MANY bull mastiffs. Are alpha and are intolerant of other males. Even the females can be like it at times. Trust me when I say to break up a fight is no mean feat. I am an experienced handler But make no mistake if they take exception to another dog they will kill it in a heartbeat or fight until exhausted. I am not putting the breed down. That is the breed. So buyer beware They are not soft teddy bears or bigfrenchies like some 😅fool suggested. They are powerful guard dogs and lethal in the wrong hands.

    • @bullmastiffnd9784
      @bullmastiffnd9784  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Yes. Not neutered males can be a problem. Even neutered. My previous dog was a neutered doberman pinscher who was extremely dog aggressive. Great with people but could not be around any strange dogs at all. When we got our bullmastiff Tua, I did not want that issue again so I began socializing and exposing him to as many dogs as possible from day one. Luckily this has not been an issue with him. Could be partially my early and consistent early exposure to dogs and could have also just got lucky with his personality. I have never even heard him growl

      @@bullmastiffnd9784 Glad you were lucky with him ! He’s a good looking boy. 👍 In a one to one family environment with a good owner they can be a great dog. They only Reason I commented was I wanted people to be aware that they are genetically wired to guard which they do well without any training. Nonetheless they are known for dog aggression especially when they encounter another big guard breed. I felt people needed to know that before they let their hearts rule their heads. That’s why many pit bulls nowadays have such a bad rap. They are being bought by the wrong people a lot of the time and unfortunately they can be people aggressive with the wrong owner. Luckily bull mastiffs are not inclined to show aggression to people. They just grab and hold an intruder if need be. Have a great day 😊
