- This GMAT question is a problem-solving question in algebra and requires framing a couple of linear equations in two variables and solving the equations. This GMAT question is a 600 level algebra word problem. A relatively easy one.
Question: A poultry farm has only chickens and pigs. When the manager of the poultry counted the heads of the stock in the farm, the number totaled up to 200. However, when the number of legs was counted, the number totaled up to 540. How many more chickens were there in the farm? Note: In the farm, each pig had 4 legs and each chicken had 2 legs.
Answer Options:
A. 70
B. 120
C. 60
D. 130
E. 80

why we multiplied 2 in equation 1?
Hi,
We are solving the two equations using elimination method by making the co-efficient of 'c' equal in both the equations.
You can also use substitution method to solve both equations.
I solved the question using alligation and came to the same answer. Please let me know whether my answer was correct by fluke or I can use solve these questions using alligation method. I am little shaky in forming equations, but comfy in alligation.
The rule of alligation is probably the fastest way to answer this question. Good that you are more comfortable with this method than the regular equation framing method - because quite a few test takers struggle with setting up alligation - and you are in the advantaged minority who find it easy to go the alligation route.
