Nicely done! Have you considered rounding the corners of the handle to a larger radius? That could make them even more comfortable to use. Thanks.

The filing flat part - I love that idea with a block of wood for a guide with slots in, never thought of that! Great choice of small files too, those Bahco 4” files are absolutely class! The punch is a lifesaver, I remember trying to drill my first one and burning bits out and not even getting one hole done!
Your final picks look amazing, I have seen a couple of people with them and to say I’m jealous is an understatement 😂 great work and thanks for sharing the process! The set looks perfect together too, brilliant to see consistency through them! đŸ˜đŸ„š

I use old blades from the porta-band saws at work. They're .020" thick and the perfect width once you take the teeth off. The steel is incredibly strong because, you know, it's used to cut other steel.

Hey man, just a couple of quick tips from a woodworker getting into lock picking. If you are trying to get straight cuts clamp down the straight edge to the table. So much better than holding it with your hand. You can also get a speed square or even just use your combo square to get have a nice square cut
Also, I know space is a premium for you but you should definitely look into a small band saw. More specifically a portable band saw and then get a "portaband table". It's super compact and you can easily store away when needed. It would be much faster and less frustrating than using that dremel scroll saw, you won't worry about breaking the blades on them. You can also use it for cutting away big chunks on the pick so you aren't grinding for days.

Some beautiful picks Ash. Thanks for showing how you make them. I know I may have never come out and said it (I'm a bit shy) but I just wanted you to know what a CLOSE friend I consider you! Why just the other day I was telling my wife how you where like a brother, living across the pond (sorry just had to wipe a tear from my eye just thinking about how close I feel too you and yet how far away you are). Did I mention how nice those pick are? One trick I've seen other do for the polishing / sanding, was fold the sandpaper in half then put it in the middle of a book. Put the pick in the sandpaper and close the book. Than just slide the pick back & forth.

A helpful tip for everyone who tries this or grinds small tools.... If you hold a wet sponge in your hand with the tool you are grinding, you can squeeze the sponge to quench the tool while you're grinding. This is something I have done for years, just not on picks. Another awesome video, I especially love this one, being a maker myself.

    Here's my Hints&Tips...just two really.
    1. Try using Banding from palletted materials. The black metal is a good thickness and I think it's strong enough. Only tried once.
    2. Use a Mag Wheel Polish first with a Dremel and cotton wheel, then by hand for an Ultra mirror finish.
I have actually figured out how to make the very best functioning lockpick and from what I have seen no one else has clued in to it so far. I am reluctant to just put the idea out there and I would really like to do a limited proof of concept run to see if I am right. The problem is of course time and money. Also, as a product for the LockSport community it won't generate enough profit to be viable as a business model. I am considering producing some custom made pick sets however the price would be in the $500-$1000 range per set of 5-10 picks in a nice box. That certainly puts it out of my budget range as a lock hobbyist. Given these facts I am tempted to just dump the idea in the community and watch it grow on its own.

I've been thinking of making some fancy handles for my desktop picks. Partly there is the pride of ownership in a custom hand crafted tool, but there is also a more practical ergonomic aspect as well. I carry bare Sparrows picks but my desk ser is their set with dipped handles. Thay're much better than flat naked stainless but they tend to roll in my hands sometimes and there is room for ergonomic improvement. Maybe I'll mahe a hand shaped tung oil rubbed walnut handle for my standard pick. Maybe I'll 3D print some ergonomic handles for a desktop set of picks.that I order without handles.

Im a knife maker and now I have a reason to keep my cutoff handle and scale wood! Those look really nice. Might try hooking the back down to kind of lock the tool in place while in use. Im noobie at this so dont know for sure what might work. Again nice job! Thx for posting.

Beautiful work. Im wondering if its possible to get a solid fit and feel while making the scales removable, id hate to break a pick and have to bin it or drill out and replace pins to keep using it. Maybe post screws to retain scale to scale, and set screws in threaded inserts to lock in the pick. Or epoxy bed the tang with a release agent for a super tight fit, but then all tangs would need to be identical. Could make it so it takes factory unhandled picks even. Your DIY videos definitely get the creative gears turning

Very nice work Ash. I could never make a consistent looking set like that. My file hand has a mind of its own and my eyes aren't that sharp.

Ah, but what hands and eyes! You do make superlative picks and I’m still learning. Even though these look consistent, time pressures meant that I couldn’t get them identical. I like to use power tools for the 80% of the making too, which I know not everyone does 👍😃😃

Personally, I like full tang. But it isn't a huge deal. And it's more difficult to align the handle pieces that way unless you do more of the shaping as one piece. Just about everything else is how I go about making mine. Well done!
