Yay! I got a name drop đ
Great video LN, the picks came out awesome, I'm sure this will help lots of people get motivated to make their own now. Best I stock up on some steel before it becomes the new panic buy đ
Fantastic job and brilliant info from start to finish, I'd be proud to just own one custom pick like them, keep up the great work my friend ;-)
Nicely done! Have you considered rounding the corners of the handle to a larger radius? That could make them even more comfortable to use. Thanks.
Can I buy one of those picks those are so beautiful đ
Assad ĆÄŁ mm ookmm
The filing flat part - I love that idea with a block of wood for a guide with slots in, never thought of that! Great choice of small files too, those Bahco 4â files are absolutely class! The punch is a lifesaver, I remember trying to drill my first one and burning bits out and not even getting one hole done!
Your final picks look amazing, I have seen a couple of people with them and to say Iâm jealous is an understatement đ great work and thanks for sharing the process! The set looks perfect together too, brilliant to see consistency through them! đđ„
Oh yeah, I remember burning my first bit out - I didnât know it was possible, lol đ
@John Eggington I certainly agree, that piece of wood for filing the picks is especially brilliant!
Very nice to see and you did a great job.
Thanks đ
I found the quickest way to make handles was print them out on a 3d printer. Took a few hours but I now have plenty of them.
Those are great options too đđ
This is one of my favorite parts of this hobby. Your example is a large part of making so. Thank you!
Thank you âșïž
Brilliant , brilliant video Lock Noob , i'm amazed more custom pick makers don't make these sort of videos , those picks you made were outstanding
Thank you, thatâs very kind đ
Gorgeous, and so satisfying to watch
Thanks đ
Another example of your craftsmanship, Iâm sure whoever receives a pick will treasure it
đ
An outstanding RESULT! If that was your 1st attempt well done.our sport is not just about picking locks of all kinds and this vid clearly demonstrates that fact, billbo.
Not my first attempt, but first video! đ
Wow Ash!
You are killing it.
They look fantastic. đđ
Thank you đ
I wanted to make custom EDC lock picks, but didn't know how to cut the metal to the shape I wanted. Using a grind stone is a great way to do it! Thanks a lot for this tutorial. Great help on all the steps!
Them picks look real nice good job
Thanks đ
I use old blades from the porta-band saws at work. They're .020" thick and the perfect width once you take the teeth off. The steel is incredibly strong because, you know, it's used to cut other steel.
Nice source of steel!
Hey man, just a couple of quick tips from a woodworker getting into lock picking. If you are trying to get straight cuts clamp down the straight edge to the table. So much better than holding it with your hand. You can also get a speed square or even just use your combo square to get have a nice square cut
Also, I know space is a premium for you but you should definitely look into a small band saw. More specifically a portable band saw and then get a "portaband table". It's super compact and you can easily store away when needed. It would be much faster and less frustrating than using that dremel scroll saw, you won't worry about breaking the blades on them. You can also use it for cutting away big chunks on the pick so you aren't grinding for days.
Thanks for the tips! đđ
Holy poop!!! I'm glad I watched this. I was trying to figure out how to get small pieces of exotic woods like that and NEVER thought there was even a thing as a pen blank. Looks like I'm making a set of picks with Bethlehem Olive wood!!!
Good luck!
Beautiful work... ...and that wonderful music again.
đ
Beautiful, and you can turn them around and use as chopsticks.
Yes!
you did a fantastic job Ash my friend great video and a big thank you for mine im very lucky to get oneđđđđŹđ§đ
My absolute pleasure, Leon đđ
Love them wish I had your workshop lol
The crappy Lockpicker the best thing is that I donât have a workshop đ I have a folding work bench and some portable hand power tools. I think anyone could makes these regardless of space available đđ
Great work!
I really like your handle profile.
Thanks đ
Great looking picks
Thanks đ
great work there, lovely picks.
Thanks đ
Nice, simple design, not easy to make by no means, but there made to do the job not look all fancy, but they do look great!!!
But then I would never expect anything less.
Thank you đ
Absolutely fantastic, itâs truly amazing to watch the process of these wonderful picks being made. The pick profile & handle design is perfect. I love the wood that you used, that has been truly enhanced by the teak oil & bees wax finish. Itâs an honour to have received one. Thank you so much. đ
It is my absolute pleasure my friend đ
Excellent video Ash really enjoyed that thanks for sharing đđ»
Thank you đ I
Some beautiful picks Ash. Thanks for showing how you make them. I know I may have never come out and said it (I'm a bit shy) but I just wanted you to know what a CLOSE friend I consider you! Why just the other day I was telling my wife how you where like a brother, living across the pond (sorry just had to wipe a tear from my eye just thinking about how close I feel too you and yet how far away you are). Did I mention how nice those pick are? One trick I've seen other do for the polishing / sanding, was fold the sandpaper in half then put it in the middle of a book. Put the pick in the sandpaper and close the book. Than just slide the pick back & forth.
Thanks Gantry đđ
Beautiful work mate.
Thank you đ
Those are so beautiful!
If the top priority was to make me want to use a pick as much as possible, I would look no further. This is it. I love them!
And I don't even know how to pick a lock. Never tried. Don't even have any tools. But I would love to learn just to get an excuse to use these..
Hat off!
Thanks! đđ
Gorgeous work!
Thanks đ
Great picks and well explained in the video đ
Thank you đ
Wow! Awesome man!
Thanks đ
Damn Ash, those are so nice! Your skills are definitely up to par for making great lockpicks. I love the way they look and I already know that they are great for picking. That profile is a definite must have in anyone's pick set. Keep up the great work my friend!
Thanks friend âșïžâșïž
Lot of work but well worth it in the end , nice job :)
Thank you đ
Great job, if I had the time and the tools I would have a go myself. It's always nice to watch someone crafting with a measure of care, very relaxing. Thanks.
Thanks đ
Fantastic video there mate. Really informative and lovely picks.
Thanks đ
You brother are a amazing pick maker. I really want one in my collection. Fantastic job brother
Thanks friend đ
"Every day is a school day"
Absolutely spot on, in more ways than one for some.
Lovely picks ans beautiful handles.
Thanks Roy đ
A helpful tip for everyone who tries this or grinds small tools.... If you hold a wet sponge in your hand with the tool you are grinding, you can squeeze the sponge to quench the tool while you're grinding. This is something I have done for years, just not on picks. Another awesome video, I especially love this one, being a maker myself.
Great tip!
Thanks đ
Those are beautiful picks! Excellent craftsmanship, very well done!
Thank you âșïž
Awesone instructional video buddy. Great video footage and explanation to the point. The picks turned out great too. I have seen a few guys get sone already. đđ
Thank you đ
Very, very impressive, great workmanship, lovely looking picks
Thanks đ
Great instructional video! Thank you.
Thanks đ
Nice job. Now I have to make some. Ordered supplys during this video. Lol I might have some questions after I screw a few up. Lol
Ask away đđ
I am really impressed
Thanks âșïž
Fantastic job mate that just make me want to start making picks đđ»đ·
Do it! đđ
Very nice! Thank you for the information.
Thanks đ
You are brilliant, wish I had the same tools and skills as you. Great video and thanks for sharing with us. đđđ
Thank you âșïž
Beautiful picks. Excellent from tips to handles. I like those. Classic clean shapes. An excellent daily use hook pick. I love these videos. Next to your picking and honest review videos. These are my favorites. Take care Ash - LN.
Thanks friend!
Beautiful. Wish that he had made the handles out of the other materials as well.
Here's my Hints&Tips...just two really.
1. Try using Banding from palletted materials. The black metal is a good thickness and I think it's strong enough. Only tried once.
2. Use a Mag Wheel Polish first with a Dremel and cotton wheel, then by hand for an Ultra mirror finish.
I have actually figured out how to make the very best functioning lockpick and from what I have seen no one else has clued in to it so far. I am reluctant to just put the idea out there and I would really like to do a limited proof of concept run to see if I am right. The problem is of course time and money. Also, as a product for the LockSport community it won't generate enough profit to be viable as a business model. I am considering producing some custom made pick sets however the price would be in the $500-$1000 range per set of 5-10 picks in a nice box. That certainly puts it out of my budget range as a lock hobbyist. Given these facts I am tempted to just dump the idea in the community and watch it grow on its own.
Nice tips đ
nicely done. thanks for sharing.
Thanks đ
Great video very nice picks thanks for the information đđ
Thanks đ
Absolutely stunning
Thank you âșïž
That was amazing workmanship, good choice of materials, I've made picks in the past but using heatshrink as handles layer after layer, yours are out of this world, once again great work, thumbs up, đđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđ
Thanks you ! đđ
The most amazing thing is how he cuts a straight line for the tang with the Moto Saw without moving the piece of wood to one side... That's impossible for me.
Those are very beautiful! Thanks for sharing this with us!
Awesome vid Ash, relaxing to watch. It's great to see how you do it, and i must say they look fantastic. Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend.
Thank you Gazz đđ
Beautiful work! It's obvious how much you love to make custom lock picks. Valuable information for those who also want to try.
Look great!
Thanks!
This and the one BB made directly inspired me to order materials I cannot wait!! Great video!!!
Happy making!!
Compelling I would hope for us all to give it a try. This is a most excellent clear precise demonstration along with important tips and hintsđđđđđđđđđđBrilliant teaching video and credit to all who have inspired you.
Thank you, thatâs very kind of you đ
Bought one of those Dremel saws a couple years ago for building model planes. It's pretty nifty.
Yeah, for small jobs itâs great!
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing your process.
You are so welcome!
Very comprehensive tutorial! Beautiful end results. I really hope you inspire many to start their own pick making journey. Thank you for helping others.
Thank you đ
Well done I really like the whole process, the part i would like to know most is how to make triple peak etc.
I use a rotary multi tool and a chainsaw file
@@LockNoob i sent you an email as i need tom ask some things please
Wonderful, wonderful instructional video on pick and handle making. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and in such a simple to understand instructions. I will definitely try to make some.đđŠ
Thanks đ
These look magnificent. I'm quite impressed. They're lovely. I respect the effort you put forth in the making of your picks as well.
Thank you đ I
Dear sir Ty. I know what I'm doing with my sparrows.
Your finish is called a satin finish herein the state's.
I think the pins are a great idea.
Did not think glue would be enough.
Yeah, glue on itâs own is unlikely to be wrong enough
Such beautiful results. Iâm interested in trying this myself after seeing how well those came out! Thank you for the inspiration đ
Thanks đ
Very nice my friend gave me inspiration great video. đđâđâđ
Thank you đ
Beautiful. Damn beautiful. I wish I had the tools to be able to do that. Maybe 1 day.
One day! đđ
Beautiful job, those are excellent!
Thank you đ
Very nice work đ
Thanks đ
Iâm not doing that unless I can stop bending picks.
I havenât broken one yet but I donât want it to have a nice handle when I do.
Great stuff.
Thanks!
They are vary beautiful
Thank you đ
I've been thinking of making some fancy handles for my desktop picks. Partly there is the pride of ownership in a custom hand crafted tool, but there is also a more practical ergonomic aspect as well. I carry bare Sparrows picks but my desk ser is their set with dipped handles. Thay're much better than flat naked stainless but they tend to roll in my hands sometimes and there is room for ergonomic improvement. Maybe I'll mahe a hand shaped tung oil rubbed walnut handle for my standard pick. Maybe I'll 3D print some ergonomic handles for a desktop set of picks.that I order without handles.
Many choices!
Well, I officially have a purpose for this small block of exotic wood! Been holding onto it for a couple years cause it's worth a bit of money but I had no idea what to do with it since it wasn't much material....handles are perfect and will really elevate the look and feel of my picks! Thanks for the idea and the vid!
The closest set I've seen to these are the sparrows thunderbird pick set and they're 250 dollars! You just showed us how to save hundreds, literally! These are beautiful!
A great video that you present to us again & thank you very much for the 3D templates! đđđđđđ
Would it be possible for you to provide us with a few templates of your grips? đ
Sadly these were just freehand
I wish you & your family a happy new year. Hi Lock Noob, thanks for your answer. I saw in another video that you published that you painted the design free hand, as well as a big đđđ for the video in which you made a handle from damask !!! Great idea. I also tried to paint a design freehand & failed đ. Could you maybe tell me how long these handles are so that I can print them out on the basis of a screenshot at the appropriate size? Keep up the good work with your videos, they are really great !!! đ
Awesome job. I want to start making my own picks, Iâll definitely be using your video for inspiration and ideas.
Awesome đđ
I noticed you don't hammer the pins in place. Try to cut 2 mm longer and bolt them. Just for fun. Seems epoxy do the job nicely.
Don't get too attached. Your picks are great!
Peeling pins takes more skill, than I have đ
I tend to make mine out of lorry wiper blades. Some of the material is very robust.I use them then as my practice picks with fair to moderate success,,You should defo manufacture picks mate and get them on sale yeah :)
If I had the time!
Thanks for this nice informative video.
Thanks đ
very nice work.
Thanks đ
great looking picks there bud very well made. Not something i would do my self as i like to keep my fingers on my hands : )
Just take you time and keep your hands away from the cutting parts! đđ
Iâve had issues with a few batches from Kennedy. Most were fine but a few coils were very soft.
Good to know đ
Im a knife maker and now I have a reason to keep my cutoff handle and scale wood! Those look really nice. Might try hooking the back down to kind of lock the tool in place while in use. Im noobie at this so dont know for sure what might work. Again nice job! Thx for posting.
Brilliant, mate! I learned something!
Thanks đ
Great video.
ratyoke thatâs very generous of you, thanks đ
Beautiful work. Im wondering if its possible to get a solid fit and feel while making the scales removable, id hate to break a pick and have to bin it or drill out and replace pins to keep using it. Maybe post screws to retain scale to scale, and set screws in threaded inserts to lock in the pick. Or epoxy bed the tang with a release agent for a super tight fit, but then all tangs would need to be identical. Could make it so it takes factory unhandled picks even. Your DIY videos definitely get the creative gears turning
Very interesting, thanks.
Thanks đ
Now I just to get a belt sander, a band saw, and a hole punch for metal :'D
Those picks are gorgeous!!! I think you did a great job, the finish is fantastic and the consistency is perfect. I would love to make a pick trade with you my friend so if you like too please let me know. Thanks for sharing your making process. Cheers
Thank you my friend đđ when I make more, Iâll be in touch!
These are great! They look like they would feel good in the hand! Iâve done some knife making and canât really see anything I would improve on. Ya done good mate!
Thanks đ
Aye! Lock Noob! Cool to see you reply! On another note..I think Iâm going to try my hand at making a couple picks. Your videos are definitely the main motivator behind me wanting to try it. Maybe one day we could trade picksđ€đ»
Great đđ
Thanks đ
Very nice work Ash. I could never make a consistent looking set like that. My file hand has a mind of its own and my eyes aren't that sharp.
Ah, but what hands and eyes! You do make superlative picks and Iâm still learning. Even though these look consistent, time pressures meant that I couldnât get them identical. I like to use power tools for the 80% of the making too, which I know not everyone does đđđ
a really good video bud good to see a how to on pick making and that you ended up with some really cool looking picks very informative đđ
Thank you Rev, you were the first person Iâd ever heard of making custom picks đđđđ
@@LockNoob i love seeing how many are now making them and have shared this video in a few groups to try and get even more making custom picks :)
Personally, I like full tang. But it isn't a huge deal. And it's more difficult to align the handle pieces that way unless you do more of the shaping as one piece. Just about everything else is how I go about making mine. Well done!
Thank you đ
I wonder if a dremel bit for the polishing would also work
Maybe!
That's awesome! Now I want to try to make one too!!!
Have you ever tried hack saw blades?
