I've been a fireman for 30 years..... seen some terrible things in my time. This is one of the most poignant things I've ever witnessed. Can't actually believe I've just seen that, sat here in my comfortable seat, taking for granted what men like AMM Deen gave their lives to preserve. God bless his memory.

Watching all those men with their heads bowed in reverence and sorrow, and seeing AAM gunner Loyce Dean with his aircraft, buried at sea tightened my throat and brought a tear to my eyes. Thank you for the ultimate gift of your life for your Country, bless you, and know that you will never be forgotten. Rest In Peace, your duty is done, Bravo-Zulu, Sir.

What an extraordinary thing to do for AMM2 Dean. His body was commended to the sea in a lasting tribute that should been seen by all. Rest easy you have been relived from your watch.

Lieutenant Robert Cosgrove, the pilot of the aircraft is first identified at the 2:58 mark in the video. He's standing wearing the flight suit opened to the middle chest area. Dark brush cut hair with his hands behind his back. He would retire as a Captain. He was awarded the Navy Cross, 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses and 8 Air Medals. He passed away in 2005 at the age of 86. He was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

Thank you John! I always wondered where he and Digby Denzek were in the footage. At first, I thought they might be the men taking the fingerprints. I had a terrible time making this. The music I found was so ideal for the film and certain scenes so powerful with emotion. I really appreciate you identifying his pilot.

I agree, except that there are STILL Americans giving their lives for their Country in every skirmish the USA is involved in during WWII and every war we've been involved in since! Every soldier who gave his life is as important as the one before him and the one after, as they have made the ultimate sacrifice of their life for their Country!

@@johnmcng Absolutely, it is so important for families to have their loved one "come home" no matter when it is, even years later. it's just where they belong after their duty is over! :"No one left behind" is part of our military's creed, as it should be. I read recently about someone from WWII who was eventually identified, probably by DNA today, being returned home to the States over 75 years after the war ended. It's important for the well-being of family to finally have them rest at home where they belong!
Today, DNA can be identified even in a bone but certainly, in the pulp of a tooth so with modern medical technology, almost no one is left unidentified anymore. Even if they have no known family left, they can still be returned to their home state and city and buried there.
And others who for some reason, cannot be identified, there is always
Arlington National Cemetery, a place for the unknown soldier who will still be honored there on Memorial Day, a celebration for even the unknown soldier!

" Or are we treading like vultures on the field of honor of this men who gave everything ? "
" To gain power and money for ourselves ? "

I have had the great honor to work with many WWII families of lost flyers trying to get answers about how their loved one perished in the Pacific. Many crashed and were never found or simply disappeared with no explanation. (shot down? bad weather? out of fuel? mechanical problems?). Deen's family was aware of the unique burial. I don't know whether his parents ever saw this historic film - and hard to watch as some of it is - I think they would have been deeply moved by the care and respect offered by the men of the Essex for their lost son. It is a powerful and unique service.

The film was incorporated into a war production moral boosting film sent out to major factories building airplanes and shipyards building carriers, etc.. Kind of like a "why we fight" thing. And wanted to show the respect the military gave to thier dead.

Yes in the sense that she would have seen see how reverently his shipmates handled him. Yes in that she would see he had a Naval Christian burial at sea with a Chaplain in attendance. Yes in that she would see the dignity, honor and solemnity that his shipmates rendered. This video leaves me teary eyed every time I watch it. Bravo Zulu AMM Loyce Deen USN. Rest in peace sailor.
