I agree with you. This is very important, for the family to still include them in all kinds of activities (inside the level of confort of every child of course).
A coworker's 7 yo son has autism, and his mom doesn't take him to birth day parties anymore because she sees he doesn't play with other kids and only wonders around by himself in the playground and she took him out of soccer because he only runs after the ball and doesn't understand the game.
I asked if he requested stop going but when she said that he didn't I told her that maybe it's his way of enjoying the party, and he gets to eat cake and get the party goodies and candies, and who cares whether he scores goals or not, he is enjoying the game. He is verbal and it's very capable of saying if he likes something or not, his parents just want him to act the way they think is "normal" and not the way he enjoys things.

My son reacted the same way. I have music playing all the time,never reacted to rock, soul or country. We were going out to eat one night and I had classical music on in the car. When we got to the restaurant he was different. Everyone noticed he was calm. From then on I played it all the time, especially if he was having a meltdown. He also is autistic. Music mends...
Just found out my grandson is Autistic, maybe he will like it. My autistic daughter and son like music, but I never tried classical
My son has ADHD. Classical music calmed him down tremendously.

It’s because of the Specific FREQUENCIES of Each Piece, FITTING Together. At least that’s how I think of my Uncle’s Autism....like he was always trying to Put His Puzzle Of a Mind Together & When He Listened To Or Played Classical, it helped EVERYTHING In His Mind...FIT.

I feel like some people I have certain parts of the brain on over active mode and when you tap in to that music area it would soothe or downplay areas that are giving anxious or reoccurring thoughts
As a music teacher of 26 years, I can vouch for its power. We had an autistic child in my band class from the time he was in 7th grade. He was also nonverbal. One day in the middle of rehearsal, he chanted back the exact (complex!) rhythm I had just modeled. His aid was floored, as was his mom when she heard of his reaction. Discovering they could connect with him through music. his vocabulary increase for 4 words to close to 500 almost over night. It was a miracle!
You should be a very proud teacher! Well done.

God loves music
God is the one that GAVE us music! Hallelujah that He did! I cannot live without music, seriously. Music got me through the abuse I got from three family members growing up. It was the only way to escape the words and the actions of them and I listened to all kinds of music. I also played piano and guitar then and now to escape the world.

Music has been extremely important to my recovery from a head injury when I was hit by a car recently.
It stimulates the brain, and can have a massive impact on mood and emotional status.
This is what doesn’t happen when the arts are taken out of our children’s lives!!

@@mikewrasman5103 They are all important, as a poor and homeless at times kid, sports saved me, and even more so my wrestling coach saved me. If my heart had seeked out the arts, that too may have done the same thing.

I try to appreciate this world thru untainted eyes...the third is important ...Our culture and religion will take that from you

There are people who think that because a child is on the Autism spectrum that they don't recognize things going on around them. Just because a child is non-verbal, or doesn't look you in the eye when you speak to them that they're somehow less intelligent than others "neural-typical" child but they are incredibly intelligent in other ways. Just like this little boy, they know and can acknowledge beautiful music.

They just don't always have an outlet to express and show how intelligent they are. Usually once you find there things it really helps a lot in every child every person autism or not has something that is their thing that they love to do or the sea or the here and when you find it it will help everyone.
Autism doesn't cause not looking into the eyes when speaking. Anxiety, or well your disrespectful.
I was told I can't possibly be autistic by a therapist because I was "too intelligent and self aware"
Hyperfixating on books and information about things I'm interested in made me intelligent and self aware.
That hyperfixation is caused by my Autism which has a genetic source in my case at least, highly likely in people with my condition.
People make a lot of messed up assumptions about disabilities and we have SO FAR TO GO.
You can hear the mesmerization and a sense of bewildered awe in his voice. Such an intensely beautiful human moment.
After seeing the eyes of a mother so desperately desiring to hear the voice of her child speak "I love you" I can appreciate the wonder in this little boy and what a breakthrough this was. My friends lost thier oldest son 3 years ago at the age of 9. He was non verbal for the exception of 30 or so very labored words. Rest in peace Sammy you are dearly missed.
That made me tear up a little. My 15-yr old son is also autistic and just recently discovered guitar. He plays everyday for the last year and is simply amazing. He'll be touring with his band in the fall. It opened him up in ways nothing else did. Never give up.
As a music teacher (now retired), I have had several students on the autism spectrum, and every one of them was very musical. Music is a means of communicating unlike any other, and many of these children respond profoundly. What a gift it is, to be able to reach them and to be a part of their genuine, open response. Thank you, Steve, for your wonderful, uplifting stories!!!
I cried at "WOW!, and all the way through. Music breaks through the barrier of strokes, dementia, and autism because it activates a different part of the brain. This boy needs music lessons and regular music therapy! His eyes were absolutely riveted to the cellist. ❤️

We love you Steve Hartman. Thank you for supplying us with good, heart-healing news in a world fraught with chaos where most news is constantly bombarding us with suffering and despair.
My Brother in law can tell you when he wants his "Ipad please", or what food he wants, but he cannot have a conversation with you. He is 21 now and Music is his life. He can sing whole songs and loves various types of music..from Chicago, to Metallica, and loves Japanese music the most. He can hear a song and play it on his keyboard..he changes songs around, adding his own touches to make it his own. I believe music touches not only those with Autism..it touches our souls. It has helped me with my severe recurrent depression over my life(no meds have helped).
He feels the music. We all should. His demeanor changed when the cellist played. He was so happy & calm.
I ❤️ this. My daughter has severe developmental delays and a deep love of music. She is not timid about sharing her enthusiasm, so it’s tricky taking her to live performances. If she gets too excited and loud, I can tell it bothers people in the audience. It also breaks my heart that she has to miss out on something she enjoys so much. It’s wonderful to see another side to this.

Wow. Thank you for this nugget. I was an instrumental teacher in the public schools and always felt chills when a student "got it". The light in they face was the reason I whistled when I went to work. Another story: I was at a wonderful recital by a concert pianist when an adult in the audience began to hit the seat in front of him and make loud sounds. He was developmentally disabled. At the conclusion of the program, the pianist Bela Siki strode quickly to the back of the hall and hugged the man. Siki thanked the man for coming. Most of us in the audience cried in joy. The music made us all human that day.

Music is everything. It is a balm for illness, an expression of creativity and emotion. It is also a form of communication. Especially for those who cannot communicate verbally or in writing. Music may be a way to engage this boy and facilitate verbal communication and greater interaction with the world around him. God Bless his Dad for exposing him to Classical Music!

I took my family to the ballet including my 4 year old son. During a dance the dancer jumped up on a box and my son laughed which caused the entire auditorium to laugh,

OK so now I'm crying. So touching. We just never know how our actions may move someone and reach them.
Oh my goodness when they said he was supposed to be non-verbal it gave me chills! Music is so powerful. Now they know he’s capable of speech and tremendously moved by beautiful music. I always played classical music for my children when I was pregnant, and to this day they still love it, especially my son who is 20 - he prefers classical over any other music and loves going to the opera with his dad. That’s unusual for teens & young adults. Wow is the perfect expression for this touching story.
