- Located in South Australia, Coober Pedy was discovered in 1915. This is where most of the "white/milky" and Crystal Opals are mined. Coober Pedy is the main producer of white Precious Opal.
The public fossicking/prospecting area is open to anyone wanting to find their own Precious Opal.

I lived and worked in Coober Pedy for a few years. It was fun searching for and finding one's own gems. Not always easy to find the really nice colourful ones all the time and you can end up a bit dusty too... but still fun and interesting at the end of the day..
Oh Liz and Wally, I love what you do. In 2010 I was over in Sydney visiting my Sister Flora (I am Scottish, live in Glasgow). There was this wee elderly couple who stayed next door to my Sis, June and Eric who used to do the same as both of you. June was also, like yourself Liz, a lapidarist. She showed me all of her work and had her collection in cabinets. They were without a doubt, in my mind, two extraordinary people. If I had lived next door to June and Eric I have no doubt I would have taken an interest in the exact same thing. They both lived well into their 80âs and 90âs respectively. Iâll never forget them.
Hi Zesty, Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. It certainly is a very rewarding hobby. To us, it is a great escape from city life and gets us to appreciate all nature has to offer be it scenery or gemstones. Hope at some stage that the opportunity arises for you to maybe have a go at this hobby. All the very best, Liz
i will give you guys a tip if you are just passing through and want to find some opals but don't want to get rich go to the public fosicing area at night with a uv or black light and the opals glow 10mins you will have a hand full to show friends just off the top of the ground and if you take a shovel who knows what u might find good luck and have fun
Thanks for tip silver stampy and hope you enjoyed the video, Cheers, Liz
Liz Kreate can you find Opal in California?
silver stampy Public fosicing area? What is that?
@@kayjab166kaykay5 sadly not
Liz, just came back to your videos..must say I don't know what I like more here: the video, the comprehensive knowledge of yours or your distinctive, dignified voice :)
You're too kind. Thank you for watching my videos and glad to know that you appreciate them. Hope everything's great your way. All the best, Liz
Thatâs so cool! I love opals. They are Octoberâs birth stone. You are very lucky to have opals near you.
Liz, you are a monster of the gems, congratulations!
I love the pale white ones. Iâm Australian and agree you donât get the full beauty of them here as the coloured specks can be really brilliant. Would love to do this. You have a great eye for finding them.
I absolutely love her enthusiasm!
You reminded me of when I was a kid and my Mom would take us out areas like this and one day after a good rain she showed me some Sand Roses just sitting there on the top... So cool.
Hi Liz, i think opals are hypnotic, i stare into them....so beautiful. Another feast of info, thank you, i appreciate your time and skill.Have a wonderful Christmas.x
Natures holograms. So beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Omg they are so beautiful. I wish I could live near an opal mine like you too. I would spend hours with collecting them đ
Wow!!! Such good information! I can't wait till it gets warm enough where I live to go out and look for opals!
I love the production on your videos...well done!
AMAZING...have couple of rough and will try to polish and make them nice as yours...good luck
The blue is so pretty. Opel is such a gorgeous stone.
The best demonstration Iâve seen of how the black potch background acrually makes a crystal opal brighter.
Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video. Cheers
Oh wao this is like been a kid in a candy store! đ Thanks for showing for findings!
And subscribed to his channel alsođ
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for getting back to me! I was wondering about the opal because it looks like you have them in water. I have read that some opals need treatment before they can be kept dry. Opals are such beautiful stones!
I only have them in water for the video as it shows its color more than when dry. Cheers, Liz
I love how excited you get!
Francesca St. James It is indeed very exciting when I get out in the field. But then again, I'm always excited about everything I do. LOL Thanks for watching and commenting Francesca and wish you all the very best. Cheers, Liz
so if i break an opal will it turn into a pearl and an amethyst
Sorry Romjee, but an opal will remain as an opal. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Liz
Hahaha....:-)

Hi Liz the video shows us the colour in your opals very well. Love your videos.

Ingrid Anne Garcia If you have a Pearl and an Amethyst, you can put them together, and boom; Opal.
opals are my birth stones so I've been dreaming to have one and this made it easier thx for posting

You got a good eye. These pieces are so pretty. I love rock hounding!
+Bridgette Brown One can easily develop a good eye for noodling once you've done this a couple of times. Thanks for watching Bridgette and wish you all the very best. Cheers, Liz
Heavenly place , so amazing. Wish I was there.
Little precious opal in CA - see Gem Trails of California - found white opal chunk near Red Rock State Park, Opal Canyon.
wow beautiful indeed ..
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Liz for your videos if I ever make it to Australia would love to go gem hunting with you .
You are so sweet collecting potch because âthey are so prettyâ thatâs a true rock hound â€ïž
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and there is beauty to everything. :-) Thank you for watching. Cheers, Liz
Liz Kreate and as I watched further in the video I realized how wise you were for collecting potch as it could hide some color while still dirty thatâs a very good practice cuz youâre right sometimes u just canât see it yet till you get it home
Thanks Liz love your vblog learning so much đŠđșđ
What a wonderful video Liz.Thank you for posting.I plan on buying land in Coober Pedy soon and your video let me know there are definitely really nice people there.Hopefully I'll meet you fossicking one day lol.Good onya mate :)
We don't live in Coober Pedy and don't know when we'll be back there. Hope I get to meet you in the great outdoors one day. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Liz
Very cool! I wish i could go there and search! Didn't know it was so easy!
So you find opal and other stones anywhere!?! Wow Iâve past by so many of those rocks and never knew they only problem now is that idk how to grind it .
But itâs cool know that any stone could be something special đ
This is a great video!!
You need to watch"Black Opal Direct".Justin takes you through the process from start to finish. You will need to get some equipment, but, man,it would be so worth it!Wish I could go to those heaps and get some! I have a cabachon machine,so it would be easy for me to polish them!
Fascinating! It's good to see what goes into finding beautiful gems. Can you show how they're ground into a cabochon?? Thanks for sharing.
Will definitely post a few lapidary videos on Opals in the future. Thanks again for watching. Cheers, Liz
Love this! Wow đ i was watching you scraping around for them, do you ever dig down deeper to find them?
What do use to grind your opals? I have a collection from lightning ridge that I found with some lovely colour that I need to clean up
Some great opal.Love to see how they are in nature.
Thanks for watching and commenting Betty. Hope you enjoyed the video. Cheers, Liz
I really like your videos and would love to ask you some questions bc I want to visit next March. I was hoping to get some advice about guides, traveling by myself and general location and safety queries.
Great videos thanks Liz. What is the best opal you have found noodling? Thanks.
Also Liz how do you go about cutting/polishing them? Is it a mechanical process or hand done?
I'm not the best with heat, but I'd bear it for some of that colour. Wow, it's amazing what you can find just lying around. I've only got flints and jaspers round my local area, oh and granite, lots of granite.
I realize this video is 9 years old now, but itâs the first time Iâve seen it.
And Iâve got to say, I am soooo jealous !!! You get to drive out to the Opal mines and fossick for opals ! Thatâs something I will never get to do. I live in Nebraska, smack dab in the middle of the USA and the only thing Iâll find here is dirt and corn. đ„Č
Oh how I wish I lived in Australia or even just had enough money to visit for a month. My bags would be so full of Opal Iâd have to hire a forklift to load them on to the plane coming home lol.
Hey, good luck though, and keep them hits a coming ! Canât wait to see what you dig up next !
God Bless You
Australia is a big country and we have to travel thousands of miles to get to these places we find there gemstones. Instead of overseas sightseeing holidays, we have our prospecting for gold and gemstones holidays. Thanks for watching.
I always want to go to australia...now i have another reason :D Omg..jus...omg i love those stones
Thanks for watching Barte and glad you enjoyed the video. All the best, Liz

Well, I guess you're lucky you have such a fantastic place to find such beautiful gems.
If I bought rough opal online, could I tumble it to get a finished effect or something similar? (I have a children's rock tumbler, hehe)
Omg i spent 25+ year's over there and never been to Coober Pedy. God forsaken hotbox, hell on earth. Just glad to be back in London. â€â€ sorry love ya channel đ

Hi Liz

you are super creative person and I love your enthusiast
best regards
Thanks for watching and commenting O. K..... Too enthusiastic at times (according to hubby). I love creating and when my mind gets filled with ideas and also looking at beautiful gems, I just can't contain myself. You got me looking for gem opals in my stash to cut after seeing your Welo Opals. They are so beautiful. Wish you all the very best, Liz
Liz Kreate:) thanks Liz
you 'inspired' me too ... and today I went to local old quarry to look for some common opal and chrysoprase and spend good time with friends. although we don't have gems here I really like prospecting and I do it for fun.
my friend was there for the 1st time and he found some nice chryso-opal or 'prase opal' which is quite rare.. and he really like it
all the best and keep up the good work .. you rock !
Opal is my birthstone :D I have been to Coober Pedy but didn't find any opals - I wish you were with me to show me the ropes!!!
Your the Best LIZ!

It's a lot of fun and very addictive hobby. Hope you have the chance to get back to your Opal spot soon and thanks for watching Cody. Cheers, Liz
Opal is my birthstone and man do i want to go find some right now!
have you ever done a video on making a sublet with white potch back .
Liz your a GEM!
Excellent video ! I love this video ! Beautiful color in those opals ! Let us see and know what inside the big one, when you cut it open.
I'll surely post a video on that William and I'll call it "The Russian Roulette of Opal cutting". Sometimes you see it(the color), sometimes you don't....lol I'll take my time so as to not ruin the stone. Thanks for commenting and wish you all the very best. Liz
Can you sell some opal if you have one?If youâll sell it does it have to be expensive?
Enjoyed the video, Liz. Thanks!

can you send me a little small opal if i tell my postal code please ? i really like opal , but we don't have no opal mine here in my country
How rare are opals and how much do you sell them for
Hi Liz. Just watched a couple of your opal videos -- they are beautiful stones, aren't they! (maganda, yes?)
Was also good to meet you both at the river recently -- and to chat around the campfire :)
Yes "Maganda." I've had a wonderful weekend and see you on the next outing. Cheers, Liz
Before opals were fused from amethysts and pearls, the name "Opal" originated from a cat whose owner was a white unicorn with a violet mane and tail.
Rlly you had to bring mlp into this huh?
Thank you for Sharing, Where do you go find Opal?
I am so jelly...
Wish I was living in Australia... Opal lying everywhere...
We certainly are spoiled with so many Opal fields to visit and prospect. Hope you'll get the chance to visit one in the future. Best Regards, Liz
