      Nadia is an amazing human being. She also has a fantastic poker face so she can easily hide how she truly feels. Nobody has ever seen her cry in public for example. She makes sure nobody can ever see her cry or be sad in front of the cameras. Remember how Bela said he could never tell how Nadia was feeling? Bela said that Nadia was the only gymnast he ever trained who never broke down or cried after his grueling coaching which pushed the envelope in being abusive. He was never able to make Nadia cry while he was able to do so to all his other gymnasts. Nadia always hid her feelings, sucked it up, and said "Let's do this."

    I still think Nadia's precise, measured technique has never been equalled. Her back handsprings on the beam? Total extension, absolute confidence, have never been bettered. Thank you Nadia, you influenced so many young girls and gave them something to really aim for x.

    • @utoob9999
      @utoob9999 Před 7 lety +10

      I don't think we've seen better back-handsprings since then, or better front aerials, or better side aerial back handsprings. She did side a aerial hack-handspring move look like it was as easy as a forward roll - which is the secret to being a true champion. No one that i have ever seen had the confidence on beam that Nadia did. Even with top performers these days (and back then) you always see some hesitation because that is one difficult apparatus to calm your nerves before a crowd.

      Shawn Johnson is the most confident beam worker I've ever seen: she's so brave it's mental!
      But I'm old fashioned: I like the grace of the late 1970s and 1980s gymnasts. I hope it comes back into fashion again!

    • @tammylee6600
      @tammylee6600 Před 2 lety +7

      Nadia had a light beautiful grace that reminds me of dance, like ballet. Her landings were soft and flips were perfection athletically but with such artistic lines with pointed toes it was so beautiful. Simone Biles is also a graceful flipper. Nadia was even lighter and more graceful though I think. It must take a lot of muscle to make it look so light and effortless. I can’t imagine the training.

    • @nogoodnameleft
      @nogoodnameleft Před rokem +3

      @@tammylee6600 Nadia gets a little bit of an edge because she was using original, old Olympics equipment. Solid wood beams with no springs attached and no padded coverings that really made Shawn and Simone look a little better than they really are (don't get me wrong they would still get golds but the springs and pads on the balance beam are like a cheat code for today's gymnasts). The floor for the floor exercise was HARD until after the Moscow Olympics also. Nadia and the other gymnasts back then were doing tumbles and routines on hard floors. It was like landing on concrete. Today's gymnasts have another cheat code with the trampoline springs under the floors. It gives them a 25% higher jump than if on a hard floor so just remember that when you see Nadia's Montreal and Moscow Olympics floor routines where she makes it look so graceful and is doing tumbles like today's trampoline springs floors. The vault landing space was hard like concrete also. They didn't add the 4 feet thick cushions until much later so it is really unfair to criticize Nadia or Nellie or Olga for taking a small half step after landing a vault on a hard floor. The quality of the uneven bars was poor back then compared to now also. Olga started the whole acrobatic revolution in gymnastics but Nadia is the Picasso of women's gymnastics. Nobody can compare.
      Does anybody really doubt that prime Nadia would not be able to master trampoline springs in floors and balance beams with padded coverings and springs added? She did what she did with really old original pre-modern equipment!

I mean she even said that she completely screwed up the uneven bars on the first day and it was a miracle the Romanian team even got silver. No other female gymnast in 1980 Moscow won 2 golds and 2 silvers like Nadia did, which according to the IOC tiebreaker rules for medal tables means she was the most decorated female gymnast of the Moscow Olympics. Everyone always tells her she should have won 1 or 2 more golds and 1980 was a failure but she says "I won 2 gold individual medals...How many girls in history can say they won 2 gold individual medals at a single Olympic Games in gymnastics?"

      Nobody else can beat her. Simone Biles is awesome too but nobody can top Nadia ever. Simone has a bunch of cheat codes with modern equipment, also. The balance beam nowadays is fully padded/covered and has springs! The floor has trampoline springs that adds an extra 25% lift compared to the pre-trampoline floor era. Nadia's whole career was spent solely on solid wood beams with no pads, no covers, and no springs and the floor for the floor exercise was solid hard with no springs at all underneath. They added the springs in the floor around the time of the 1984 Olympics in L.A.
      Today's gymnasts would be too chicken to dare do routines on uncovered, no springs wooden balance beams and hard floors with no trampoline springs like Nadia did.

      Olga is right when she says it was propaganda. Nadia did good in 1976 but Olga did better than that in 1972. Nelli is also right about the mistakes Nadia made. @@mariojack The Soviets constantly strongarmed beaten gymnasts onto the podium anyway. That's propaganda. Judges being dazzled maybe by a supposedly perfect gymnast is biased at worst, certainly not propaganda. And a sport that is judged by humans will never result in perfect agreement anyway. I know it's not the individual gymnasts fault, but it's a bit rich of the (Ex) Soviets to cry foul so easily. Pot kettle and so on.

      @@mariojack , as a German girl back in 1972 I remember Olga Korbut well! And I agree with you that Olga in Munich was better in many ways than Nadia in Montreal - mainly because Olga had much more charisma than Nadia, the earnest child performer. But I always saw her as a little robot.
      Olga does come off as bitter, though. I think that this has a lot do with Olga's life after her athletic career was over. She did not have a particularly good life, while Nadia managed to do very well for herself. Maybe, her discipline and work ethics were a great asset, while Olga was always mentally far more unstable.

    • @nogoodnameleft
      @nogoodnameleft Před rokem +8

      @@sabineb.5616 Olga 1972 was not as good as Nadia 1976 at all. And the difference between them both is Nadia backed up her Montreal performance with TWO GOLDS in Moscow 1980. Notice how Olga tried to make excuses for her poor performance in Montreal 1976 by saying "I was only focused on team gold in 1976". Pretty pathetic whining by her.
      And before anybody claims that Olga's life was worse than Nadia's after they retired from gymnastics, remember that Nadia was the most famous Romanian, even more famous than the dictator Ceaucescu. Nadia was a prisoner of the Romanian government and banned from leaving Romania starting in 1981 except for the 1984 Olympics where the U.S. government and Romania made a deal to give Nadia back to the Romanian government if she tried to defect (Remember that Romania was the only Warsaw Pact nation to participate in 1984 because Romania by this time in the Cold War was more like Yugoslavia than a Soviet puppet). Nadia was physically and sexually abused by Nicu Ceaucescu, the son of the Romanian dictator. Nicu considered Nadia to be his favorite sex slave and he would torture and execute anybody who Nadia would date and become her boyfriend. Nadia's mom confirmed that Nadia would have bruises all over her body and even had her fingernails removed by Nicu. THAT was why Nadia was so desperate to leave Romania which she did in 1989. Then she was abused by the guy who helped her escape Romania. He ended up using her to make $$$ and he stole all her money. He abused her too but when Nadia is asked about what this guy and Nicu Ceaucescu did to her she always deflects and then says she doesn't want to talk about it.
      It was only after she moved to Oklahoma to be with American Olympic gold medalist Bart Conner in 1991 when Nadia's life became happy and stable. And they both are still together and happily ever after in Oklahoma with a son.

    • @nogoodnameleft
      @nogoodnameleft Před rokem +4

      @@mariojack Korbut's landings weren't perfect either. And back then they always landed on HARD FLOORS. The trampoline spring floors and springs landing mats didn't exist until the 1984 Olympics. Back then they weren't judged on landings due to the hard floors. They judged only the performance and the spins and flips while landing. Nowadays they have like 4 feet thick springed landing pads, so it is laughable to compare today's landings with 1970s/80s landings.
      What was actual propaganda was when the Soviets rigged the Moscow 1980 women's all-around where Nadia was in first place but then after 30 minutes they decided to award it to the Soviet who was not as good as Nadia.
      And it is funny seeing Olga make excuses as to why she was shitty in the 1976 Olympics. She could have put more effort to get some individual gold and silver like Nadia worked hard for in 1980 but Olga instead whines and says she was "focused more on team gold" in 1976. She is so fake. Nellie, OTOH, is lovely and while she is a little bitter she isn't as angry as Olga at all. It also helps Nellie to smile about her rivalry with Nadia due to Nellie tying Nadia in the floor event in 1980 for gold when Nellie did not deserve gold at all.

    Looking at this I don't think both of the soviet gymnasts are throwing shade. While Olga comes off as bitter, I think Nellie Kim's commentaries have been acceptable. It's her opinion that Nadia won the '76 Olympics because she was better prepared psychologically, and from all we've been presented it may be true. Nadia seems to have been 100% there mentally, concentrated on doing her best and her resolve knew no parallel, so I don't take that as a downplay of her skills (it might very well be the defining character trait that set her apart). It also goes well with Bella's statements about Nadia as a person and her approach to this sport.
    And this is coming from a Romanian.
    But still, Olga, that shade tho, wow...

    • @nogoodnameleft
      @nogoodnameleft Před rokem +2

      Olga is so salty because Nadia was better than Olga in every form. Olga might have pioneered the new modern style of gymnastics but Nadia perfected it. Olga's balance beam routines for example pale compared to Nadia. Nadia doing all those flips on the balance beam, the hardest event for women, was revolutionary back then and still is revolutionary. The gymnasts today can do so many flips on the balance beam but they still wobble. Nadia barely wobbled if ever on the balance beam.
      And, well, Nellie Kim shared gold with Nadia for the floor exercise in Moscow 1980 so that is why she is more than happy to smile and offer to hug Nadia and praise her. Olga OTOH thought that she was supposed to be the Nadia of her generation and she was angry that this random 14 year old Romanian took her revolutionary ideas from 1972 and made them better. Olga I think was so angry that she didn't get the magazine covers, no Olga's theme, and no perfect 10s like Nadia.
      People need to realize that Olga was the alternate or the last member to qualify for the 1972 Munich Olympics. She has always had a huge chip on her shoulder because they all labeled her as the black sheep of the 1972 Soviet women's gymnastics team. The other Soviet girls and coaches didn't like Olga at all in 1972. She mind as well have been competing for a different country initially because it was only after her haul of gold medals and silver medal in 1972 did the Soviet gymnastics community and Soviet citizens love Olga.

That Romanian book confirms everything with actual communist-era secret police records and even recordings in the late 1970s of Nadia in bugged hotel rooms telling people that Bela abuses her! Nadia worked with the author to confirm or deny what happened with Bela (the confirmed by Nadia parts are described in the book) in exchange for nothing to be mentioned about her being abused and becoming a sex slave for Nicu Ceaucescu, the son of the Romanian communist dictator, in the book.

      @@pedestrianrights1257 Nadia was the pioneer. Compare Nadia's balance beam routines in 1976 with Olga's very mediocre balance beam routines in 1972. The balance beam is the hardest event in women's gymnastics and Nadia is out there doing floor routine level tricks on the beam while Olga was wobbling and not doing those tricks in 1972 Munich. In fact Nadia's balance beam routines hold up well with even today's gymnasts especially because Nadia had no springs and no padded/covered balance beams like today's gymnasts.
      Olga is a Model T compared to Nadia's Apollo/Space Shuttle. Olga was a pioneer in terms of something new like a car but Nadia went to outer space. And why was Olga so crappy in 1976? Hearing her make excuses for her poor 1976 Montreal individual performances was hilarious! Nadia instead of only living off of 1976 Montreal was the best performing women's gymnast in the 1980 Moscow Olympics. She confirmed that she is the greatest at Moscow. Even with a rigged group of judges against her she still won two golds and two silvers. She was the only female gymnast to win 2 golds and 2 silvers in 1980 Moscow. Because Nadia embarrassed both of them in 1976 and 1980. Nadia even with rigged judges against her in Moscow was the most decorated female Olympic gymnast in 1980 Moscow. She won 2 golds and 2 silvers. No other 1980 gymnast did better than Nadia's 2 golds, 2 silvers.
      Also they are bitter how perfect Nadia's life is now. Nadia is married to the very rich Bart Conner, a two time Olympic gold medalist American gymnast, and she lives a beautiful, happy life in Oklahoma now. Nadia has all the documentaries, movies, and even a song revolving around her. They are all thinking, "Why do people love Nadia so much???" It seems they refuse to learn about Nadia's hellish life in 1980s Romania when she was a sex slave of the dictator's son. The extreme abuse that she suffered was why she had to escape Romania.

    Says NK - ..."Nadia was prepared better psychologically....that's why she won" I mean, I really like NK, but both she and OK come off as a bit ruffled after all these years of Nadia winning hugely over them for many years. How about this angle, Nadia won because she is extremely talented, worked very hard (harder than her coaches asked her to), wasn't afraid to try new and difficult skills (that no one had ever ventured to try), and pulled off stunning upsets? Nadia was clearly the better technically prepared performer and could execute skills like no other gymnast. That's why she won! Also, I think OK should look up the definition of propaganda.

    • @utoob9999
      @utoob9999 Před 7 lety +14

      @Luisa No, to all the above, except that NK did receive two tens in the same Olympics, but only after Nadia scored the first 10.0 in Olympic history and made it so obvious that her score was in fact perfect that the judges had no choice. A 10.0 never crossed a judge’s mind (or the creator of the scoreboard for that matter!). OK and NK tell an old story like someone who was bumped unfairly out of a medal or championship or something. Really? Tell that to Nadia regarding the 1980 Olympics. Nadia never complained - (ever) and then you have these two complaining 40 years later about - what exactly? Let it rest already. Does OK think she ever stood even a tiny chance against Nadia on 1976? Nadia was by far the technically superior gymnast, and should have been scored 10.5 and 11.0 if you compare difficulty in beam and bar routines. What do you mean by “not continuing to compete”? Nadia won the European Gymnastics Championships 3(!) times - a hat trick that no other female gymnast has pulled off. That’s being the best for 6 years. That is not a comet. That is more like a long-range space ship going around the entire galaxy and back to remain at an elite competition level that long in an endurance sport like gymnastics. She kept improving over the years - 1979 was her best year - amazing shape and upgraded routines for all events.

No fair! 14 year olds have an advantage because they are lighter and faster since they're still kids, not to mention with girls, their training and diet delays puberty....why do you think the Chinese were lying about their team's ages? Notice how the 18 year old Nadia performs vs the 14 year old. From Nadia on, it's been disguised as women's gymnastics when in fact it became GIRLS gymnastics......yes propaganda and a very clever one. The great Larissa Latynina and Vera Caslavska were women (21yrs old or 22 yrs old) when they competed in their very first Olympics!!! Now that's WOMEN'S gymnastics!!

After the 72 Olympic Games, a new panel of judges were brought out and 10s were given. Nadia fell and still took second place, besides, she took a huge step on that beam routine in 80, and still expect a score close to 10?

      Back then steps after landing were allowed because the landing mats were HARD FLOORS. They didn't have thick springs and cushions like today's gymnasts have for landing mats. They judged them on everything else except the landing steps. Compare Nadia 1980 balance beam with Olga 1972 balance beam. Olga's balance beams were a JOKE compared to Nadia. Balance beam is the hardest women's event and Nadia was the first to do all those complex flips and spins on the balance beam. In fact Nadia's balance beam routines hold up very well with modern gymnasts. The good balance beam gymnasts today look kind of shitty compared to Nadia and Nadia had to work with solid wood beams with no springs and no coverings on the beams.
      You should be talking more about the criminal fact that Nadia was in 1st place at the end of all-around but the Soviet-dominated judges talked for 30 minutes and then advanced a Soviet to 1st place and Nadia got silver.

      @@nogoodnameleft Nadia sucks, she didn't deserve to even medal. She stole that silver medal.
