Took the bus from loja to quito last night. Then the metro to labrador and then a bus to Mindo. Nothing out of the ordinary was observed; it seems like business as usual. Mindo is very tranquil.

Today my friends went back to Colombia ( well to Guayaquil first and flying tomorrow early in the morning ) Pilar, one of them was panicked for two days , today when they were arriving to Guayaquil she called me and said “ The main stream news media is a disgusting business, they almost ruined my vacations…. Viví if you could see around Guayaquil you would se how everyone are living their lives , everything looks normal and calm .
… right now their are site seeing Guayaquil with the Hotel owner that I had recommended.

I very much appreciate your updates as we are going to be coming down to Manta in March and then moving to Ecuador for good in the Fall, hopefully around October if all goes as planned. Hopefully, Naboa is savvy enough to not cut deals with the US empire that in debtor Ecuador, and therefore invite US corruption-domination by US empire of over involvement in this beautiful country of Ecuador. But, actually, the constitution isn't being changed yet. In a couple of months, people will be asked if they want that.
I'm against the raise of the IVA. I once talked to a wealthy friend who said that she contributed her 5% and made a gesture akin to washing her hands. I pay between 20%-30% in the USA. Increasing the price of goods by increasing sales taxes only serves to hurt lower-income people. I understand that this is easier and faster to do, but I'm concerned that expeditiousness may harm the people who are most vulnerable.
I'm also not so sure that deporting non-Ecuadoreans is a smart move. If they are free, they'll come back. It's happened in the US that undocumented immigrants who committed crimes get deproted, and then they go ahead and sneak in back into the country and commit more crimes. It's better to keep them locked up.
Your analysis of the media makes sense, but it's incorrect. There's a motto in the media: if it bleeds, it leads. This is why tragic news is always front and center. Another thing that happened is that a TV station was attacked. The media are like a little cartel of their own in the sense, meaning that if you mess with one, you mess with all. This is why so much coverage has been dedicated to the taking of the TC channel. I took a bunch of journalism classes in college, where I learned about this. 😉

Ecuador will always have problems with North Americans as long as it's difficult to fly back and forth to towns other than Quito and maybe Guayaquil.
