‘Down to earth’: Danish royal family not as ‘closed off’ as British royals

- Sky News host Caroline Di Russo praises the Danish royal family for being “down to earth” with the former monarch, Margrethe, known as the “people’s queen”.
It follows the formal abdication of Queen Margrethe II.
She was the world’s only reigning queen and the longest-serving current monarch in Europe before her abdication.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen proclaimed Frederik the new King of Denmark on Monday morning.
“They are not as closed off as say what the British royals are - they really are part of their surroundings,” Ms Di Russo said.

While you do live a life in luxury as a royal member in Denmark (at least the King, Queen, their children and the former Queen), it is not necessarily an easy life. It is a constitutional monarchy in Denmark, meaning the royals have no real power. This also means that as a member of the royal family, you are being watched and scrutinized by the press every single day.
Every time a member of the royal family is caught doing something not considered royal or as being part of the royal duties, there is a high possibility of receiving a great deal of ridicule from the boulevard press and usually also calls to abolish the monarchy from republican leaning Danes, politicians etc.
No one. And I mean no one in Denmark knows her as 'ash tray queen'. Only ignorant English media calls her that.
She is a beloved Queen hold in high regard.

To be entirely fair. Coronations have pretty much been like this since the introduction of the latest Danish constitution in 1849. Prior to that, I believe you have to go back to before 1660 to find Danish coronations with the same type of pomp as the British coronation with crowns, apple, scepter and sword etc.

Congratulations King Frederik! Beautiful - but they need more Horses ! ( those Brits really have a lot of Horses.)
Our new Queen Mary have her own stables so maybe she will make more horses happen. But please remember that this are a one off, we have not had any abdications for over 800 years so protocols followed to a high degree are following the one where the old monarch just passed same day or day before. Normally a grieving new monarch standing on the balcony thus not designed for large festivity.
Comparing the British royal family and danish royal family is pointless. Denmark is a lovely but small country of 5.7 million people, it’s not even a regional power let alone a global one. The U.K is a country with 67 million people, is a prestigious country with nuclear weapons and a permanent seat at the UN, it has a powerful military and a lot of powerful enemies that Denmark doesn’t have, the U.K Is still very much a global player. Having the British monarch just walk around the streets as normal would be impossible because it would be a huge security risk, also the british monarch is also the head of the commonwealth and is king of 14 other countries.
