As a Virginian, I feel that when it comes to sports Norfolk is the feeder city to DC. If you are looking for a closer experience you go see the Admirals (Hockey feeder to Capitals) or Tides (baseball feeder to Orioles). If you want to see the main attractions, go up north and stomach the prices

Even a day trip up to Baltimore or Philly was something we did quite often. Fun Fact about pro sports in Hawaii: There were actually two teams that called Hawaii home in the 70's. The first was The Hawaiians of the awful World Football League who lasted the two years the league existed from 1974-75. Then the North American Soccer League (basically the 70's version of MLS but not sanctioned by FIFA) moved the San Antonio franchise to Hawaii for the 1977 season. The team struggled both on the pitch & attendance wise & also had to deal with very high travel costs for away games. Not surprisingly after the season ended, the team was relocated to Tulsa to become the Roughnecks where they remained (and even won the league title in 1983) until the league went out of business after the 1984 season.

They found some on-field success, winning the PCL title in 1975 and 1976, but financial issues stemming from poor stadium situations (their original home, Honolulu Stadium, was _wooden_ and when Aloha Stadium (which is multi-purpose, to my own initial shock) opened in 1976, the team didn't have full control of the park, leading to a 1976 forfeit when management shut off the lights to protest the use of metal spikes on the turf field) led to them moving to Colorado Springs, on the mainland, in 1988.

It's a pretty big city, the 32nd largest city in the US, it's a mile above sea level, creating a challenge for visitors, and its college programs suck, so its ripe for someone to come in and give all those people something to cheer for. Plus Santa Fe is less than an hour away and they have a rail line that runs straight into the heart of both cities. The old Anchorage Aces (WCHL/ECHL) seemed like a draw for a time. The big issue… owners of other teams HATE paying for that travel and the relative expense of lodging in Anchorage. Owners weren’t exactly willing to help out the Aces when they started having problems.
To some degree, I understand that some college ADs in the GNAC might feel the same.

I mean... Hampton Roads has been trying to lure the NBA or NHL since the 90s. So even though the population is largely transient the desire for one is there. Largest issue they've had is building an arena big enough. The most recent attempt that I at least know the outcome of was the proposed beach front arena in Virginia Beach. Which collapsed in late 2017 with the developer suing the city in 2018. With the judge ruling in favor of the city in 2019. Then if I recall Norfolk last year said something about redeveloping the Military Circle Mall into an arena. But I don't know if there's any legs to that.

Correct. The issue of the Arena not being in place was realized when the Hornets wanted to relocate. The state had to create a sports authority to address this for future endeavors. The Military Circle Development proposal is still in the air…I’m not sure who’s design they chose, Pharrell or Bruce Smiths, but I think they all had an arena component.

I live in Richmond, va we currently have a double a baseball team, a minor league soccer team and their are talks of getting a minor league hockey team. The city of Richmond could easily support a major league team, but the reason it doesn't is bc the majority of residents support DC teams, the other half support front runner teams like Braves (bc the city was host to their Ava team for years before they left), cowboys and Yankees. Also Norfolk has a minor league team in baseball/ hockey. Lynchburg/Roanoke/Fredericksburg gave minor league baseball. Don't forget about charlottsvile/Blacksburg with uva and VT. Virginia also is able to support multiple nascar races each year in multiple cities. We would love to have a major league team but don't say we cant support it bc we are able to easily support all of this.

Kentucky hurts, specially as the ABA lasted for about a decade and the Spurs won multiple NBA titles (and that's coming from a Spurs fan, the only team I support from the 4 major leagues, I could count the Storm and the Galaxy too)
