    The greatest band of all time, the Beatles! From young heartthrobs for teen girls to cultural giants of the 20th Century. Their evolution is very magical to the point they transcended time, that's how much they impacted our culture. This is their early stuff and it may not be much compared to their later work but it was still enough to be considered fresh when they first started out as no one never done this before.

      @ptournas Před 2 lety +1

      I agree with most of this, but I didn't at the time think any of the six cover songs they did on their first album, including this one, were particularly fresh. They were songs that we had all been listening and dancing to for several years. They were excellent performances, but the only one I personally felt came close to being better than the original version was "Baby It's You". Of course their originals were definitely fresh and had new sound to them. I am also of the opinion that they are the greatest and most influential band of all time.

    The Beatles catalog is deep and varied. There are many reasons why they're (rightfully) considered the best band of all time.
    Not only in sales and popularity, they changed the way music was performed and produced. And they helped give all artists control over their songs. Before the Beatles, the studios owned the songs and did with them as they pleased.

    The Beatles were extremely creative once they hooked up with producer George Martin but they were originally a performing cover band playing American rock n roll.
    This song was a hit for Cincinnati act The Isley Brothers in 1961. The "Twist" was a "dance craze" that began in 1959, the year they had their first hit single, "Shout".

    • @chrisg9196
      @chrisg9196 Před 8 měsíci

      @@Bikerbuoy The reference was to songs (plural) not this particular song. The changing music history was reference to this event (their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show) marking the beginning of their enormous impact on music history. In the early years, The Beatles covered several other songs in their early albums (for example: Mr. Postman and 'Til There Was You). Many claim The Beatles' covers were better than the originals. Admittedly, others would disagree. Nevertheless, The Beatles' cover songs were distinctly The Beatles as they interpreted the song.

    Here's a fun fact: On April 4th of 1964, a short THREE months after their TV debut, the top five songs on Billboard were...1) Can't Buy Me Love. 2) Twist and Shout. 3) She Loves You. 4) I Wanna Hold Your Hand. 5) Please Please Me. All by the Beatles. Difficult to think this record will EVER be broken.

    Beatles are timeless. I grew up enjoying hard rock from the 1960's and 1970's. Still enjoy it. I didn't really start respecting the Beatles until probably age 30.

    A great place to start if you are going to explore this group. They've been called the greatest of all time. It's hard to argue with that considering what happened afterwards. They have a huge rabbit hole to go into. Really, you are depriving yourself if you don't wade through their catalog. I only suggest that you start at their early stage and move forward. Their musical progression is astounding considering that none of them could read or write music. What you are looking at here is the true excitement these guys brought to the world. They were a breath of fresh air in a very stagnant industry. I remember the very palpable excitement when it was announced that they would be on Ed's show. Everybody watched. They're here and they're every bit as good as the hype. They came in on top, stayed there, and went out the same way . All the while they produced a dizzying array great music. All other bands tried to keep up. By 1967, they realized it was futile to try.

      I need to clarify it where you said the couldn't read or "WRITE MUSIC" they wrote music but they couldn't "NOTATE" music with musical notes on a musical staff like you see on sheet music. So they DID "write" their own melodies and lyrics" by just working out the melody/music on piano, guitar and in their own heads. They were simply geniuses.

It boggles my mind TOO that with the internet it is SO easy to look up ANYTHING. Back then, I had to go to a library and do research for school papers, etc, which took a lot of hours and work. SEEMS like the EASIER it is to LOOK up information, the LESS people seem to know.

The Beatles were and still are the most important group in rock and roll history that still influence countless artists today. What you saw was just a taste of what was to become Beatlemania-each year from 1964 to their breakup in 1970, the Beatles set trends and other bands and artists followed. If you want to track the history of rock n roll in the 60s the Beatles is the band to follow.

      If I remember correctly, this performance was aired on the Ed Sullivan Show on Feb.23, 1964 but it was recorded at an afternoon performance on Feb.9, 1964, then THAT EVENING is when they played LIVE (The Ed Sullivan SHow was ALWAYS LiVE) for their first live performance on American TV. They also played live when the Ed Sullivan Show went down to Miami, Florida for the Feb. 16th show, where the Beatles ALSO played live that night. They were here in the U.S. from Feb. 7, 1964 until a day or so AFTER the Feb. 16th, performance when they flew back to London, England. WHILE here they also played their FIRST U.S. CONCERT on FEB. 11, 1964 at the WASHINGTON COLISEUM in D.C. THAT concert is ON YOU TUBE, if you would like to watch it. For me it is there BEST LIVE performance EVER. They were SO MUCH MORE ENERGETIC in their performance (they toned it down a bit for the Ed Sullivan Show) and is something you should see! On Feb. 12, 1964 they played their 2nd live concert at CARNEGIE HALL in NYC. They were the FIRST ROCK BAND to EVER play in CARNEGIE HALL which was usually only for symphonies, choral singing and some opera, at that time. No video of that from what I have seen for years, just some still photos.

    Early Beatles songs are simple and, in my opinion, boring. From here, they set off on the greatest explosion of creativity of any musical group of the past 70s years. To really appreciate their variety, however, would require a much deeper dive. There are dozens of brilliant songs you could explore, but listen to "A Day in the Life," which came out less than four years after this, to see how astonishingly quickly they progressed.

    • @patticrichton1135
      @patticrichton1135 Před 2 lety +1

      @Robert Slack "BORING"? Of course you are entitled to your opinion, but you are in a small minority who think their early songs are boring. IF they were boring, they would have never been as popular as they were in their early years....it was PHENOMENOL! I don't know your age or if you were around or even born yet when they first started recording. Yes they evolved with each album. We couldn't WAIT for their next album to come out because we never knew what they were going to do next. SO IF they decide to dive into the Beatles' "rabbit hole" they NEED to START listening to the Beatles EARLY SONGS, especially their ALBUMS and go chronologically forward as they were released back then, in order to FULLY APPRECIATE HOW they evolved in both their music, looks, fashion, etc...but especially their music. Jumping around and starting with later songs and going backwards in time, makes NO sense. So I HOPE they will start AT the Beatles beginning.

      Boring!? How much of their early catalog are you familiar with? They were very unique sounding and anything but boring from the start.

      Hi thumbsaloft - almost everyone says/calls this song an 'Isley Brothers song' - but they were also just covering it. Twist And Shout was co-written by two great songwriters Bert Berns and Phil Medley and was produced by Phil Spector. The original version of the song was released in 1961 by a band called The Top Notes - an American R&B band. Their version was not a hit. A year later was the Isley Brothers version in 1962 where it peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100. And a year after that in 1963 The Beatles version came out and Twist And Shout peaked at #2. On April 4, 1964 the top 5 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 were - #1 - Can't Buy Me Love #2 - Twist And Shout #3 - She Loves You #4 - I Want To Hold Your Hand #5 - Please Please Me.

    Come on, Come on, & Come on & Bounce John! The only thing good about that song is John bouncing! I love that bow & the end!

      I know, that was incredible to me. I don't expect them to know much about them or their music, but just never HEARING of them is weird, especially with the internet. You would think they would have come across their name SOMEWHERE. I bet though, that they may have heard some of their music somewhere and just didn't know who it was.
