- In the 17th century spite, hysteria and accusation could get you into real trouble and this is the case in the story of the Pollok witch trials.
Often referred to as the Pollok witches I think that is an unfair name for 5 women and one boy who would be convicted of witchcraft on nothing more than the work of one girl.

Great video about an often forgotten dark chapter of Glasgow’s history!Although just a couple wee things, at the time of the trials the Maxwells didn’t actually have a Manor House, they stayed in a castle (often called the Laighe castle). Which stood around where the current stables stand ,just east from the site of the current house (which was actually a cherry orchard at the time of the trials). Polloktoun was also a bit further away than in the video, actually sitting just across from the current weir, being accessed by stepping stones rather than a bridge!
I had heard about the second lot and knew that their remains were buried under the horseshoe. ‘Legend’ says that Paisley will prosper as long as the witches remain under the horseshoe. Seemingly a time ago the horseshoe wore out or went missing and Paisley’s decline at the time was blamed on the missing artefact. As your video shows there is a nice shiny horseshoe and brass (?) surround which is obviously not the original. Nice that the council have preserved this and not just tarred over it.
There are still witches in Pollok, my x wife lives in the scheme and still
casts spells on all who anger her.😀
"Scheme"? That's what the two-bob SNOBS who infest Glasgow like to call it. It's actually a SUBURB.

Nice little tea room in Pollok House. The soup with sandwich is a winner. Lovely grounds, stables, a beautiful walled garden, not to mention the Burrell Collection nearby.

@@AstonishingGlasgowthere’s a small circular marking on the road In Pollokshaws with the clock tower on the left that supposedly marks the last site where a witch was burned at the stake. Have you seen it?
I have not seen that, I will need to have a look. It is possible that it marks the site of a gallows or the site of buried remains. In Scotland it was more normal to hang those accused of witchcraft then burn their remains rather than burning at the steak then bury the ashes on non consecrated ground.

When I say "I can't believe this!" I mean it purely in the sense of "bloody hell what the actual f_ck" rather than saying it isn't factually correct. How completely insane! Amazing to learn of this, thought I knew everything about Pollok Estate, but there ya go!

Apparently Janet Douglas was pretending to be deaf and mute and at some point she was "cured" and could speak very well, not only in English/Scots but in French too. I'm surprised you didn't mention "Witches Hill" which is on the golf course just across the river from the house -- this was excavated by the Glasgow Archeological Society and a few interesting things were found.

When I was a teen, it was common knowledge that witches still had ceremonies in the park (30+ years ago)
They carried on the Witch Trials from Hyde Park, London!!

It was instigated by a woman and it cost the life of a young man. I would say they were victims of the time in which they lived more than anything else.
I hear conflicting stories. This guy is saying the first woman accused was Janet Stewart but others say her last name was Mathie.
What about the most recent case?!?!
I have not heard about a recent witch trial in Glasgow.
Perhaps the young woman should have picked a better profession than witchcraft.
I dont think she picked it as a profession, it was just a spell she was going through.
Janet Douglas & her conveniently having a voice only when she wanted to condemn others! Who believes a woman who feigns being a deaf mute?
