What a hot mess of a stage. Am I the only one amazed that Fiorelli was able to stay up after getting knocked into the barriers in slippery conditions; he used them like a water slide and kept on motoring rubber side down. And Cavendish getting 5th crossing the line on his belly...
Man that could have been a nasty crashâŠglad to see that he managed to stay on the bike
It was a nasty crash...for some of the crowd, one broken wrist at least I reckon
@@pellme when Mr Hatch said 'only one person will be happy after todays stage', pretty sure he actually meant two
Swiss skier Lara Gut finished (I think) her first World Cup race on her butt, sliding across the finish line ~ but she did that glide unassisted đđźđ
Pushed hard and knocked into the barriers, handling skill master
What a bike throw!
3:36 good thing it wasn't those old barriers that crash would have been horrible
The guy who had he arm through the barriers might disagree....
True!
Yeah I miss the old days, cyclists used to be tougher.
@@Mike-rm1lb sure everyone used to be tougher but its not by coincidence that mortality/severe injury rate has gone down across pretty much every sport if you really want to die to win then thats your funeral... just my take
What was âgoodâ about this crash was how the barrier performed. Cav slammed Fiorelli into the barrier and he slid along and regained control and stayed upright. In years past his bars or wheels would have hooked on something and he would have endoed
The rider came across cav wheel thatâs what caused the crash
its some yowamushi pedal anime type shit actually its pretty cool
Cavendish actually (based on overhead) did quite an athletic, acrobatic move to stay relatively unscathed at those speeds. Wow. Way back in the day (80s) I was the lead out man for our Cat 1 sprinter in SoCal and so I love the overhead shots of leadups to pro sprinting. Basically at 65 years of age I can hardly believe I used to do that. So many stories! So many crashes⊠đ
Sad, every aged cyclist tells about crashes, not about victories.
@@DmitryDruzhinin Itâs not sad! My crashes were more memorable than victories. And they left more lasting effects! Whatâs sad is people thinking its sad and commenting in a public forum about it, frankly. So back at you, my friend! đ
@@tommyrq180 Don't take any notice of that sad Russian. Probably the only cycling he's ever done is to the local shop.

You have to add the bad roads
Cavendish actually got fourth place. Dainesi was judged to have deviated from he's line and got pushed back in the rankings.
Strange interpretation as so often.
@@arnoldhau1 Strange interpretation? He misjudged his speed relative to Cavendish's, thought he was clear to overtake Cavendish but overlapped Cavendish's front wheel instead. Also, mind you: they don't go lightly over punishing Italians in the Giro ...
Cavendish deviated substantially himself
@@Martin-ls9bz Cavendish did deviate before being overtaken, but the crash-causing moment was when Dainesi's back wheel touched Cavendish's front wheel. At that moment, Dainesi was swerving quickly towards Cavendish, while Cavendish looks like he is trying to avoid the wheels touching.
@@Martin-ls9bz Indeed, there's no need to deviate over a 1/4 of the width of the road, when you're in the final 80 meters and the road is clear in front of you. He steers back into the bunch, which is THE cause for trouble. You cannot expect a rider behind you to deviate more than two riders wide towards your wheel. We don't have eyes in our backs. Cav should never have been there in the first place. As pretty usual...
All part of the race. Credit to the organisers no serous injuries. Thank you GCN. The show must go on â€
Action packed!
Cav must have one of the best wipeout compilations in pro cycling
Rain. Stray dog. Uneasy peloton. Crashes.
Goodness me, what a day! đČđČ
Well done Mr Groves! Another win for Australia! đđ
M đŠđđ
It was a crazy day!
"on a day that most riders would rather forget". great show. thank you.
I hear that was Roglic's dog.
đđ
Rumour has it heâs got a remote controlled hay bail to deploy on the next TT
Waouh crazy day
Amazing hero
Clearly, that dog is owned by Roglic
The little dog goes back and tells his friends " I'm on the telly !"
Anyone criticising Cav should watch the footage again. Dan Lloyd got it wrong too, Dainese penalty was bang on!
Cav crashing would make a 2 hour movie at this point. I wonder how he does it.
It was clearly Cavs huge deviation that put himself in that mess. So you are actually wrong. Look at the overhead...play it at 0.25x..easy to see it was Cavs doing
So JonnyMac..you are clearly a bit of a mong.
Damn,... Cavendish clearly got his front wheel clipped by the guy in front.
@4:03, right when Cavendish hits Fierelli (the guy in green), some small white objects goes shooting forward, up, and across the road. What the heck was that? I'm thinking it was part of Cav's shoe that broke off when his foot collided with the front wheel of the the other rider.
those are peoples phones sticking through the fence. probably broke some hands.
Actually quite a good selection of video clips for Highlights today - BZ
Could be twice as long, though....
Question: are days like today, where the peloton is moving slower and taking longer on the course harder for the peloton or could be more like a rest day?
4:03 Was the little white flying thing a boa button from Cavendish shoe when he made contact with possibly Fiorellis wheels spokes?
Dog on the course?!? Only in Italy. Or pretty much anywhere! Such bad luck. The pup looked fine as the rider avoided him pretty nicely. đ
4:01 DSMâs fault
I don't think so. Cav was moving to the right to get behind a wheel. He went too far to the right and got into the DSM rider, who was still going straight at that point. Perhaps wha thappened next could be considered separate - Then the DSM rider was moving left to get out and sprint, and might have thought that Cav was finished sprinting and was dropping back (because Cav stopped pedaling). When DSM was going left, Cav was slightly behind the DSM rider and should have went to the left with him. Typically the guy that is behind must yield because he is far more likely to go down if they hit eachother. Cav probably thought the DSM guy was going to stay on the wheel. I don't think it was entirely the DSM rider's fault
Did we watch the same footage? DSM rider was going straight when Cav bumped into him. Only then he pushed back so he wouldnt fall himself. And according to Cavs reputation and seen footage I see this as 100% Cavs fault
Wow! An acrobatic figure made by Cavendish when he was falling down! It shows us he is a brilliant sprinter đ
Cheers to all the bike mechanics that work hard behind the scenes after a day like this to provide the cleanest and safest bikes for the day after. You are little heroes. đșđŠđđ§âïžâïžđ§œđȘŁđ§Œ
What a mayhem riding into the last 7ks. Other than that a really dull and cautious, I should say, etape.
The first rider to crash has his helmet to thank for walking away from that one!!!
3:37 Kind of happy for rider in green jersey. Very good "counterattack" if you can call it so. But white one seems to have done it unintentionally, has been pushed before that as well.
Yiiiikes, just not for the nervous.
Having the cross walk paint strips on the finishing straight in the rain is asking for trouble
What song is playing in the background???
Thanks, that dog did not actually do more than bark - it must have spooked Remco - glad he recovered quickly
His crash at the end caused more damage đą
Jumbo rider swerved and took Remco's wheel out, Remco was overlapping wheels
@@Mike0 Mike knows this thanks Mike
Helmets saved those guys at 1:05
3:14 Remco actually luckier than the guy on the ground behind him who got run into by another rider. That hurt from my desk chair.
It did look like he took a Big Ring in the back the way he reacted....
Compare this years Giro first 5 stages to 2022.... absolute snoozer bruv
That drift right by Cav in the final was very dangerous, and look at the outcome
he tried the old bang head routine, and failed miserably
After Evenepoel's first crash 'no racing on' (1.50) - can someone explain the rules?đ”âđ« Thanks...
Good morning from the Yorkshireman in the outback. đŠđș

listening to him would be a knucklehead move.
If you watch the replay of the finish in slo mo. Than i wonna know how the hand of that spectator is where Fiorelli brushed over...đź

One thing glossed over here, the white paint on the road is not slippery. This is a fallacy. It was slippery maybe 30 or more years ago, but ever major country in the world has been using non-slip paint for years and years, this century at least. No old "slippery" road paint remains almost anywhere.
Hate it when the result is in the thumbnail
Yeah. Surprised Rob Hatch didn't spoil the race with his opening sentence....
Fair play to the guys.. Those conditions are a nightmare
The only thing missing in this stage was that dog holding an "Allez Opi Oma" sign...
Are the roads more slippy or are pro tyres poor in the wet? I donât get it. (Not the finish, but the slow in stage crashes).
Italian roads in the wet are notoriously bad.
Both probably
Road tires have basically zero tread so they donât do too well in the wet
@@benji1681 bike tyres have such a small contact patch they do better than car thees at displacing water, so they donât need tread pattern for that, you will never aquaplane like a car. There must be something about the tyre compound or road surface that makes it worse.
Those roads looked particularly smooth, making it like riding on ice when they're wet. The first Quick Step rider to go down in the dog incident must have slid 30m along the road.
Cav is just having some bad luck lately.
He deviated his line hugely and that crash boils down to himself..he made his own mess.
Just like you make your luck, you also make your bad luck. If he'd stayed on his line nothing would have happened. As it is he got what was coming đ
[edit: not 'first dark-shirt rider']
I thought Cav's front wheel was just barely clipped by rider before him, moving left? Then whether teammates or similarly dark kit/clothes, a rider to right of Cav seems to move left (following previous dark-clothes guy) when Cav moves right.
If all three stayed straight, no crash...
yeah think Cav's back wheel slipped slightly on the white line under power which put him off, so he gave up on the win and headed back to the shelter of those ahead. Which was quite a risky move to those behind at 70kph imo. Dainesi had his focus on the finish line looking to try and go around the few ahead for the win, so I don't think he even noticed Cav moving back in to the right which was quite an unexpected move imo.
Everytime is a pleasure to see kav kisses the floor!!!đđđđ
Astana DS on the radio: "How'd you do?"
Cavendish: _"I scraped by for 5th"_
@Nigel Buckham This is the Giro - there's probably some road furniture with his name on it....
Cav did that all by himself
What happened to Vine?
He was involved in a crash unfortunately and lost time.
News revealing the dog is slovenian
Apparently it was a Jumbo Viszla đ
Crazy physics as Cavendish crossed the line.
So much for grippy tires....
đđđđ you've been framedđđđ
Thank God all the Mickey Mousing and crashes are not affecting the GC and the real contenders' chances.
Cavendish should be DQ he is reckless and dangerous
The dog is Roglic best friend i guess..đđ
To me looked like the DSM rider deviated chopped Cav up forcing him into Fiorelli
For the last kilometer or few hundred meters of the race just show the live audio and video, itâs more exciting to feel the energy and suspense of the live announcers instead the summary here telling you who the winner is before you show the sprint. I really cannot understand why you think the viewers would want the winner told to them in advance of watching it. SHOW us who won , wont TELL before.
Cav was already drifting right before Dainese went across his front wheel. In my view they either both get penalised or neither of them. Cav even had a look over his shoulder like some 20yr old rookie.
I agree Leroy, I think Cav made a major error. I'm just glad there wasn't a pile up of injuries because of him.
@@dixieboggs3609 yeah you could argue they both got a penalty - Dainese relegated and Cav hit the deck, but everyone else was ok (at that point anyway).
Re the crashes: we need please the helicopter film, in slow motion.
Rain ( heavy ) in Mcr and Leeds today too. Not unusual. Think we were warmer than ITA tho looking at the all weather gear worn
There is no rule that when crash happens 3km before the finish line, all riders affected by the crash have the same time as riders who were close to them at the time of crash?
I thought there is such a rule.
Yes! That rule was applied yesterday. The crash into the corner was before 3k unfortunately though!
Unreal. I like cycling....but would have to train for WEEKS to even complete 171km. They race it faster pace than I could ride a mere portion of it.
Remco, impara a stare in gruppo e guidare la bcicletta, il Giro NON Ă© il Tour che sarĂ pure piĂč prestigioso per questione di marketing ma Ăš molto piĂč idifficile e mpegnativo. Forza Pinot.
Wow! Imagine the mess if they were still riding rim brakes and 23 mil tires. đ whew! By the way, anyone know the tire size they used in early Grand Tours? Just in case, I love my new Time Scylon rim brake bike.
28âs across the board probably
U're talking like rainy days never happened on rim breaks and 23 mil tires. Jesus, you're not obliged to write bullsh!t just because you have a keyboard, are you aware of that?
Rain makes everything more fun! Dogs, too!
Haha, mans' best friend!
dog: race's best friend.
Ugh
Cav was travelling pretty well at the end there. I'm willing to bet he gets a stage.
I want to see the photo finish of cavđ
You'll lose that bet, he had already sat up before veering right into the line.
@@isitrachelorj3953 He sat up due to a big rear wheel slide he got when going over a slippery white line.
@@jakobjas4212 I disagree, but, that makes no difference. He had sat up and was no longer challenging the sprint. So why did he go right (by a least a meter) into the contenders going so much faster than he?
@@isitrachelorj3953 what happened after he sat up is irrelevant. Barry James stated he thinks Cav will get a stage this Giro, you said he wonât presumably because you thought he sat up because he couldnât keep up, which isnât what happened.
Dainese should get relegated for that. Completely chopped Cavâs wheel
yes, already relegated. 34th on pcs
Cav is to old and was fading fast and got in the way.
No way that was 100% Cavâs fault
You didnât see cav veer across half the road into Dianese?
Id say it was 50/50, Cav went far right after starting his sprint and sitting down, Dainese was moving faster and went left, Cav gave up as the poor winner he is so both should be relegated if 1 was.
Maybe cyclists need wet weather tires like auto racers use?
What this video doesn't show is how Evenepoel took himself out in his second crash. He was looking behind and to the left while veering off line, touched a rider coming up on the right, then corrected himself into another rider coming up on the right. 100% his fault. There was open space all around him and he managed to hit two riders and take himself out. Mad skills!!
The Dog was paid off by Rogla đ
From behind the sofa?
You never get annoyed watching these cycling exciting adventure and in the end big surprise big suuuuurprise, yeah, every winner we feel like crazy happy
Cav 100% caused that last crash. Loosing speed and drifting back into line, of course Dianesi had to deviate, he was trying to avoid cavâŠ.
Attenti al cane!
It was like a huge magnetic attraction throwing Cav across the road.
wouldve been funny if cav crashed but won while sliding at 60kmh
caos
Poor Remco. Taken out first by a dog and then by a seagull đ
The roads are simply too narrow.
How wide do you want them?
Super awkward when youâre trying to shove someone who isnât there.
All these wannabe achieved nothing you tube commentators. Comments like "his front wheel was barely chopped", no such thing at 70kph have you ever ridden a bike. He moved into a gap, the other rider chopped his front wheel. But hey your right Cav is incompetent he fluked all those wins, yawn.
If you look on the over head shot Cavendish went to lean on the rider infront of him and mis then ran into the green jersey putting him into the barrier had it been the old ones things would have been different. And out on his own. The same shit he did to Peter Sagan and got him put back. Now he got rewarded for him mistake. Not Right.
Knucklehead sprint on slithery wet conditions
Cavendish should be dqâd for riding like a amateur. Swinging around like that in the last 100k. Old man needs to give up his roster spot for actual talent. It ainât the 90âs anymore.
Find the dog owner. Fine him. Jail him for two days.
@Quintius Hirpinus 0
Like a good leadout guy who has already shot his wad (cav had already conceded) he should have stayed center line, out of the fray. But no, he's Cav, so he veers right for 5th place.
Why did Cavendish move right? Makes no sense, it was sprinty time.
So the speed was 38 km/h. It makes me feel I am not completely useless as a cyclist.
Cue the Cavendish haters đ
Wow classic cav pinballs two riders one into the wall and crosses finish line on his ass âŠgets 4 th place
