      @V_4_Versace Pƙed rokem +26

      @@kuivia they explained it away by saying since the king took a Black wife (which is actually said to be true) that allowed the doors to be opened for other Black families to join high society. But also I do find it weird when shows erase Black presence like Black people didn't exist until the 2000s or something 😭. There are plenty of stories of Black people in high society all over the world (the movie Belle is a great example in the UK) but since money is louder than colour, I promise that at any point in history minorities could be found. For some reason historians just like to erase that fact?

    19:46 Hello, I'm a History Grad and basically did my whole degree on historical attitudes towards sex and gender - SO I'm gonna hit you with some info that I think answers your question. More below.
    Basically, it was pretty much from the 1960's onward that we see an increase in people having premarital/casual sex and attitudes towards it have steadily relaxed over the past 60 years - the invention of the contraceptive pill in the early 60s meant women could ayoooo without the risk of getting pregnant immediately - either with a husband or without one. This freedom to have sex without the risk of pregnancy basically led to whats commonly referred to as the 'swinging sixties' where everyone had the freedom to explore sexuality on a whole new level.
    Of course, the freedom to AYOOOO when you wanted and hold off from having children also led to many more opportunities for women - if you could choose not to have kids you could then devote that time to other things; careers, travelling, jobs, etc. Once the 'inevitability' of motherhood disappeared, the emancipation of women truly began - over the last 60 years the roles of women and men have changed on a drastic scale in comparison to how they were defined in the couple of hundred years before (which was pretty constant, meaning women stayed in the domestic sphere and men operated in the public sphere (politics, finance, employment etc)).
    You may know that In the Victorian era it was normal and in fact expected for women to have 6-8 babies (Queen Vic had 9!!) and look after those children whilst men went to work - yet if you compare that to today in the UK we have much smaller families and women can choose to have children much later in life than when they first start their periods.
    Abortion practices have also hugely changed the game - in the past and up until the mid 20th century abortions were extremely risky and could result in death from both infection and blood loss - its only after abortions were legalised in 1967 that we see a decrease in the death rates of women seeking them. So, we can presume that rather than risk their lives women just waited until they got married to have sex - that way they could have some financial and social security if they got pregnant. (the movie Vera Drake is a hard watch but explores the sorrow, shame, and danger that could be associated with these pre-legalisation abortion practices)
    WW2 had an impact on attitudes to sex too - from 1949 British men travelled to europe to fight in the war and left their families behind, however the county still needed running! All those men left their jobs as engineers, bus drivers, farmers etc. Therefore, the call went out for help and it was the women of the county who rolled their sleeves up and answered. When British soldiers returned in 1945 they discovered that the partners they left behind were not so easily put back into the 'mother' and 'wife' boxes - they now stood proudly as engineers and workers in their own right. Women tasted social and economical freedom and developed passions outside of the domestic life, and it's not been the same since!
    So yeah, it's basically a mix of the pill, the development of safe abortion practices, and war that meant women could AYOOO as much as men had in the past, there is also also the decreasing role of the Church at home over the last century which has also led to more sexual freedom. However, that is a huuuuuugeee topic in itself so I won't go into that one today.
    I hope you enjoyed the brief dive into sexual history, it's honestly such an amazing area of study and I'd recommend exploring some of it!! If you're interested in learning more there's a great podcast called Betwixt the Sheets: The History of Sex, Scandal & Society by History Hit (presented by Kate Lister) on spotify and I presume other platforms. See ya!

    Omg Seb this show it’s so good!!! I think season 2 is better than the first!!! Please keep watching. And the thing about the show is that every season will be focused on a different Bridgerton sibling so the story line doesn’t feel repetitive for the same characters. And you should know (as a brit) the hierarchy of titles and why Simon comands such respect he is a Duke!! And FYI Anthony is a Viscount, the reason he is not good at managing the family is because his dad died when he was young and he wasn’t actually prepared for the role of head of the family so young. But you’ll start diving deeply into it as the show progresses. Keep it up!!

She's one of the few people who can genuinely get away with telling him when he's being a stupid douchebag. 19:51 It happened all the time. They were called 'Natural children' if not full out 'bastards'. With men it didn't much matter so long as they provided for the child and the child's mother - re how Berbrooke's name was ruined later in this episode because he did not provide for his child. Women were generally considered 'ruined' if they had sex before marriage. The point here however is that neither Penelope nor Eloise know how they actually become pregnant, they don't know what sex is. Men were generally told during their teens (heard of some stories of fathers or male relatives taking their sons to brothels so that they'd find out), women mostly knew nothing until their wedding knight

    Please watch more!! In the book series Daphne has already had her first season with no suitors. Simons point of view points out that it’s because her 3 older brothers have scared them all away.

    If you like Penny, I suggest my favorite show Derry Girls. She's Irish and it takes place during The Troubles. Lots of anti-British slagging, but it was common during the time.

    I don't see anybody explaining the historical side of things. The presentation before the queen was real, since adulthood wasn't really a set age historically being presented in front of the queen was a public statement that the girl was ready to be an adult (for men the statement was a graduation of school). And that didn't just apply to being ready to be married, as younger children (for both boys and men) were not allowed to go to certain events, couldn't really call on people formally etc. Girls were presented once, sometime between the ages of 16-22 (16 was a bit rare for the presentation age), which is why the girls across the street were all presented at once. The season was just the offical term for the summer months in which social events were being held, and a good portion of those social events were to play the marriage mart. Since travel was more difficult, the marriage mart was basically lets get all the young people in the same room to play match maker.
