Taking place in Boston as it is, Whalberg was an obvious choice for a lead role in a film with this premise. He'd be on every logical short list, right after Damon and Affleck.

Ed A. Whalberg is not the mastermind behind the film. Your comment is flagrant misinformation.
He is listed as just one of a long list of credited producers, and in reality he simply got a producer credit as added incentive to do the film as the lead-actor. It's common practice in Hollywood.
CBS Films and Lionsgate handled all of the casting, the selection of Berg as writer/director, and the financing. It's their film, their idea.
Mark's older brother Donnie (also from NKOTB) was in the Boston Marathon, and thankfully, happened to be around a corner (protected from the building) when the explosions went off. I bet this hits home for Mark and probably why he wanted to be apart of it!

All of you people saying this story wasnt worth a movie smh. Me being a Bostonian, I'm pretty sure I would know more about what happened than what the media says. This story isn't just about the bombings. Do you people even know what happened after? The bombers were two brothers. The younger brother ran over his older brother because he was guilty. Then, he hid in a boat in a driveway(right down the street from my grandma's house) until the residence saw there was blood on the boat. She then called police. There's always more to a story than meets the eye. So don't be dicks about it. This was a tragedy that deserves recognition. #BostonStrong

Are they going to go over the part where the blast clearly came from inside a building and not the street (which can be seen from surveillance photos), are they going to show "Craft" (a merc group) standing around near the locations where the bombs went off with the exact same backpacks (also seen from multiple photos before the blast), are the going to show the bomb drill that happened just minutes before the bombs went off?
Actually they were CST (Civilian Support Teams) from NY, RI & MA... but yea the bombs came from their backpacks

Some compelling things to look up are how the Boston globe tweeted that "there will be a controlled explosion opposite the library in one minute as part of bomb squad activities" and like magic, it happened. How'd that happen? Also you can hear announcements in the videos that it is a drill and to stay calm. Also the quartered runners held back from going to the finish line up to 45 minutes before the blasts have a lot of questions themselves. Also look at the private contractors spotted on scene, and the "damage" done from the supposed pressure cooker bomb and what that would really look like. All this is even avoiding the obvious stuff like prior amputees being there playing roles, fake injuries, botched responses, it's a goldmine. Also look into the martial law they imposed in my hometown, and the supposed shoot out. Good digging homie!

I'm in shock, at first I had no idea what this movie was about, but then I noticed he was a cop from Boston and was at marathon. My jaw completely dropped and literally I started to have goosebumps.This movie will be great I just know it.
I like many of my fellow new Englanders will be passing to see this movie. i was crossing boyston to trinity church and i was right about to cross into the library when i heard the commotion starte. people running crazy for their lifes. i get this is a topic that makes a great movie. but i don't want to relive that experience. i want to remember that day for the people who acted brave and true. the first responders, the police officer we lost who was just doing his job. the students and kids who lost their lives and many others who where injured. but what i like to remember is the new England spirit, the runners who after running a marathon also ran extra to get to hospital to donate blood. i wan to remember our beloved mayor Menino.. one of the finest leaders this city has ever had. and i want to remember how after they found the guy. in the middle of the night people from all over boston came out to flood the city streets and sing "sweet caroline" till we got tired and went back home. i will respectfully decline to see this movie out of memory for all these fine people who where there and suffered and perceived for us. its just to close to home.

Honestly, Peter Berg is fantastic at telling tragic true stories without Hollywood-izing them. If this was ever going to be made into a movie, which, whether we like or not it was, I think that he's the man to make it respectfully.

I am very proud to be Bostonian myself. Well I don't actually live IN Boston, but I live 15 minutes away.
I'm so confused why all the comments are basically saying why are we making a film about this. WHY NOT? Whether you think it is a small scale or large scale event it was still horrific. It's a way for everyone who wasn't there to be put in the situation through film and have a little bit of empathy for the people involved.
I'm not hating on the movie, but it just empowers the wrong people giving them this kind of face time or media attention for their cause, if you know what I mean.
