Kind of eye opening when an unreleased song by Springsteen is better than most released songs today. To be fair, this song is incredible. It seems to combine a lot of the elements from not only the Darkness album, but Born to Run and Nebraska as well. I'll be listening to this nonstop for at least a week.
love affair with this man's music started in 1974 at a concert with a friend --- didn't know who he was --- and I have been completely on board every inch of the way since that. The joy never ends!!
This song has just about everything you could want from a mid-to-late '70s Bruce song: girls, souped-up cars, bad boys, disapproving fathers, Catholicism, lust, drag races, and a Bo Diddley beat.
It STILL confounds me as to why this song was not included on "The Promise" compilation of outtakes - especially considering that "Preacher's Daughter" is well liked, and even more importantly, this is a complete take with vintage lead vocals. There was plenty of room for it to be included on "The Promise."
Jp. Berührend Songs sung by a Beautiful Singer sehr schön romantisch klasse gesungen von der Königin Musik auf der Welt unvergeslich. LOVE CZcams und Co. Servus pa.👍🎸💔💖
Wow, you expressed that so well, thank you. Bruce is the best. Oh, by the way . . . "Spanish Johnny just drove in, from the underworld last night." Just thought I'd share that, for whatever it is worth.
Part 2 . But YES, I totally agree - ANYTHING "New" to most of his fans, ESPECIALLY OLD GOLD like this, would be quite a treat for our ears. START THE GRASS ROOTS CAMPAIGN!
I told my son after the Promise was released that there's still more out there from the Boss. Maybe we have to start a "turn 'em loose, Bruce" campaign.
In response to a lot of comments about who wrote the song, etc.: This is clearly "Mona" with different lyrics. "Mona (I Need You Baby)" was a Bo Diddley song from 1957. As noted by "ftblrg" Springsteen has used it in concert as an intro to "She's The One" because they both have the "Bo Diddley beat." Springsteen's live versions, as well as the music here, are closer to the Rolling Stones' cover of "Mona," with the pulsing reverb guitar effect.
Darlene Durrwachter Rushing this is like a prequel to "She's the one". Bruce wrote "Preachers Daughter" during the darkness recordings. This was also recorded for Darkens.
I know that 'the way' will be a bonus track on disc 1, just like rosalita on the hyde park dvd, this was a 'secret'. now i just hope that 'preacher's daughter' will be issued on disc 2 as a hidden bonus track!!!
I assume you remember who "Turn 'em Loose Bruce" was? New York State Supreme Court. Judge Bruce McMarion Wright. He earned the nickname "Turn 'em loose Bruce" because of his low bail practices, especially to minority defendants. I actually saw him and heard him speak "Back in the day" at a "Men's Club Breakfast" (with my Dad) at the now (sadly) defunct Monsey Jewish Center (NY). He was considered quite radical and DID seem to be quite a character. As an adult I could relate better to his side.
@rufaless Well, it's not exactly the same song. If anything, On the Darkside sounds like a mix between She's the One and I'm a Rocker. I definitely think "Eddie" was a Springsteen fan.
Passionate as always but you can imagine why it was left off the album. "Darkness" wasn't exactly infused with gospel. Bruce's vocal style on this track is also different (assuming it's correct that this was a Darkness outtake) In the "tracks" collection, Bruce explains why some good things had to be left out.

So much:"She's the One" over this song.

Wow, so haunting. Sounds like it was song in a church. Unbelievable atmostphere in this song, depth of feeling and raw talent.

Wow I've never heard this song until now. Holy crap it's good!
Almost sounds like it could be on Nebraska.
Now we know what the genesis of "She's the One" was.
Darlene Durrwachter Rushing this is like a prequel to "She's the one". Bruce wrote "Preachers Daughter" during the darkness recordings. This was also recorded for Darkens.
Yeah! Great... This song is to find on "Darkness Outtakes 1977/1988 Vol. 1 - The Iceman"
Darkness outtakes
BRROOOCCEE!

.....she leads me to water...but she dont let me drink..
Epic.
yes
@spf1410 I scrolled down after I posted my comment and saw yours, and ahhh it's another "Bruce Moment"
13 peoples never dated a preacher's daughter...
I married one.
Thanks, Hell Hound
is there anyway i could get an mp3 of this? i love it.
I'm thinking that they couldn't get the sound right for the current record. Bruce is really fussy about what he puts out there.
they do give the sweetest first kiss...the second kisses are the road to hell, lol...
Sounds like an Eddie and The Cruisers song - 'On the Dark Side'
Obviously this was first
Definately hear She's the one in this song. Great on it's own though.
Samo jedan je Brus.
@dianadoll7 Tell us: advantages and disadvantages, please.
another very cool song from BS
was this released in any album ?
Sorry 1977/1978 ;-)

springsteen should have sued back when (On the darkside) came out in the 80s. same song

im dating a preachers daughter XD

Keep it angry Bruce.
Is this Bruce's song?
Remake of this song::: " barman´s daughter".
