That car is still around today. It was recently “cleaned up” a bit, being a former Herbie stunt car from the 1969 film as mentioned before, but still wears all its original scratches and dents. I recently got a chance to see it in person. It’s mostly unrestored, but in surprisingly good shape. There are even places on it that still have the original yellow paint from this scene.
I just now noticed, when the beetle at the drive in backs out of its spot, it bumps the car next to it. Watch at 1:25 you will see the dodge to the right rock a little when it gets bumped.
Herbie: calling all bugs! First bug: i'm coming! More bugs start to follow herbie. All bugs: Obey herbie! Junkyard bug: hey wait up! Bug with couple making out inside: screw this movie i'm chasing after herbie!
Me as a kid: I love this scene! Me as an adult: How? What's the lore behind it? How can they communicate? I thought only some beetles were special and not all were alive? if all of them can be sentinent what makes Herbie different? How can the beetle inside the garage open the door without anybody to help him? can they communicate and influence other machines? if so, why not just do the same with the demolition machines? are junkyard cars alive? do they still feel? if so, when does a car die? if I turn a car into a little cube of metal, is it still alive? is it suffering?
My theory is that I think Herbie has the power/ability to bring any other car to life, no matter what. Not sure exactly how it works (I assume magic), but have you noticed that these Beetles comes to life when Herbie honks at them? Herbie does the same thing in Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo when he chases after Giselle (the Lancia). Because we don't see any sign of life of Giselle until we see Herbie honk at her during that scene (where Herbie first sees Giselle and chases after her). And in Herbie Rides Again, we also see the San Francisco tram and Mrs. Steinmetz's jukebox have a mind of their own as well. I think Herbie also did something to bring them to life as well. I personally think no machine in this universe has a mind of their own (except maybe a few exceptions, like Herbie himself) until Herbie gives them life.
That's what I thought because of jim Douglas's quote "They make 10,000 cars all exactly the same way, and one or two of them turn out to be something special." Either that or all vw bugs in the movie have a hidden life 😂
Andrew Chapman literally every beetle show was a herbie at some point before being in this movie. Even the junkyard beetle was the stunt car herbie that gets pushed off the cliff by thorndyke in the love bug

To the evil Mr. Hawk, this is his worst nightmare. Disney did have a scene where he is having bad dreams and thinks he's being attacked in a hospital by Herbie! LOL. I wish they hadn't cut that scene.
I would say that the pre 70's Bugs were all Herbies at one point, even the Bug coming out of the Garage, @0:25 you can see what appears to be a hole on the trunk, most commonly where the foglight would have been on the HRA & HGTMC bugs
Herbie and his “friends” save the day! I can’t even tire of any of these Herbie movies! I’d gladly trade my Hyundai for a 1968 VW Beetle with the number 53 on it!
This scene and Hawk's nightmare were the two I remember the most about this movie. It's got to have been 40 years since I've seen it.
