The Only Way to Escape a Swarm of Bees

  • As “Save the Bees” projects have popped up everywhere - honeybees are necessary to our environment, after all - many people have turned into amateur beekeepers. Swarms are definitely a concern. The thing is, bees are pretty sophisticated when it comes to communication and their complex societies. They can send “help” signals to a swarm with their pheromones, which can travel surprising distances.
Getting stung by a bee is the worst if you don’t count shark bites and some other things! How can something so tiny inflict so much pain? Can you imagine being attacked by a whole swarm of bees? You’re about to find out. Don’t panic! There are things you can do if you see a swarm and fear being attacked - and there are also things you shouldn’t do.

    SUMMARY:
    - Just so you can be on the alert: honeybees breed in the springtime. This results in overcrowded hives, and a new queen bee may appear to rule over her new brood.
    - When you first spot a swarm, don’t panic. Some honeybees are more territorial than others. The Africanized Honeybee is particularly territorial, and will defend its hive with its life.
    - Run away from the swarm in a straight line until the bees stop chasing you. You can outrun a swarm - just run as fast as you can.
    - Whether you have a blanket with you from a picnic, a hood, or even your own shirt, use whatever you can to protect your face; especially your eyes.
    - A shelter with a door you can close is ideal - your house, your car, even a public restroom with a door if you’re at a campsite or nature preserve.
    - Turn off every light so that the only light source is from the windows.
    - Scrape the surface of the sting with a credit card or something similar. You’ll want to remove the stingers as soon as possible, so the venom won’t continue to spread.
    - Honeybees have evolved to detect dark colors, so light-colored clothing won’t appear as threatening to them.
    - Any hidey holes or cracks should be filled around your home and in any outbuildings on your property.
    - If you notice a bee or multiple bees aggressively bumping into you, a swarm and an attack might be on the way.
    - Swatting at a bee with a newspaper, magazine, or flyswatter will cause the bee and the whole swarm to attack more aggressively.
    - Even though they can’t sting you in the water, they’ll just wait for you to get out or come up for air.
    - Bees love sweet stuff - from the flower nectar they look for, to your open can of soda.
    - Avoid lots of hairspray too guys. The sweet or flowery scent of these products will be irresistible to any bee.
    - If you notice a hive near where you live, don’t call the A Team, call a bee professional.

Yep...I was once chased by swarm of bees. When I was 8th years old, I was all alone in the ground, I saw swarm of bees flying by....I took a long stick and chased after them, just in fraction of a second bees attacked and chased me back.... I was stung, I ran around and cried...Mama, Mama... then a good neighbor saw me and asked me to get inside her house and she immediately closed the door, some few bees got inside too. It was really a fearsome childhood's experience, my face got swollen up badly, my body was in red. Still really feeling grateful to my neighbor for saving me. Thanks for bringing back my sweet memory.

Yes I have been chased by a swarm of bees.
My brothers and I were very young I was around 5, brothers were 7 and 8. We had a hive on the back of our house and decided it would be fun to throw rocks at it. One of our rocks eventually hit the sweet spot and the hive came crashing down.
My brothers and I started running in a panic and I was in front, one of my brothers tried to push me outta the way and ended up knocking me out through the process.
I was stung over 300 times, and I’m now deadly allergic to bee stings.
    Fun times.

Two weeks ago, I was pulling up some big weeds and small trees growing in my patio in some gaps between the concrete slabs. While pulling on one small tree trying to dislodge it, I found myself swarmed by yellow jacket wasps, being stung on arms, ears, top of head and every where else they could get to, except my face. I was definitely doing the bee dance. I went in the house and many bees came in with me. I went out the front door and back in and lost some. Then I looked under the kitchen sink, grabbed a bottle of windex glass cleaner and sprayed the ones in the house. This dropped them to the floor where I was able to step on them.
I was stung anywhere from 40 to 100 times. Impossible to tell since the stings only left pain behind with no welts. The next day, I had some major swelling, mostly left hand, right arm and right ear. Couldn’t sleep that night. Didn’t seek medical help. The next night I applied some natural product salve to my arms which helped suppress the pain. By the 3rd day, the pain turned into itching, and by the 4th day, the swelling started to go away. Today, 2 weeks later, I have some scabs on my hands and arms.
I hired a pest control company to get rid of the bees. Haven’t seen one yet.

I'm a beekeeper. I was walking away from some hives at the apiary, and one colony became quite defensive. We moved possibly 30 yards away and then boom, I got hit in the face like 3 times in about 5seconds. I was with lots of experienced beekeepers at the time. I wish they told me to run. I quickly put on my veil but they kept coming. Running is the only option if you're out in the open, despite lots of people telling you to stay calm and asking you whether you think you can outrun a 40mph flying needle. It really all depends on the temperament of that particular colony. As a beekeeper if a colony become badly behaved, we squish the queen and replace her with another that it calmer in nature. The genetics them go on from there, thus making the whole colony calm in time.

We lived in an apt. that had tons of wasps in the walls. We lived there for 4 years, and were only stung once, right at the beginning. I'm convinced wasps recognize individual scent. They grew used to us and never stung us again, even though they would swarm out when we were noisy about getting in the front door, but just circled and left. Every single one of our friends was stung, though.
When we got a house, I let the wasps build nests in the yard. They get rid of a lot of nasty insects. They never, ever bothered our dogs, and once I carelessly reached past a tree to get something and brushed against a big nest with my arm. There were instantly about 15 wasps crawling on my forearm and hand and swarming around my head. It took every ounce of self control to not start screaming and running, but I slowly moved back and away and after buzzing angrily, they left me alone. There is an country belief that painting your porch ceilings in shades of deep or bright blue will prevent wasps and bees from nesting there. It used to be fairly common in the deep South a long time ago, before pesticides...

Honeybees don’t attack very often. It’s Wasps like Yellow Jackets and Hornets you want to watch for. I was attracted twice this year by a wasp nest I’d pulled up while weeding. More than 100 times. I’m not allergic so Benadryl was my go to. The second time the same nest attacked. This time I got Cellulitus. Nasty things.

Please DON'T ever RUN!! Most likely, they will follow you & attack!! My niece & I with my dog were walking to the creek when we were children. The dog found a fallen limb with an active beehive. Of course, he agitated them and my dog got stung several times. At that time, I had never been taught what to do in this situation. I ran like lightening & I was stung multiple times. Indeed, i did have an anaphylactic reaction & epinephrine saved my life. At the same time , the dog yelped and I ran w/o forethought, my niece remained very still and calm. She beseeches me to not run but it was too late. Also, she took a deep breathe & attempted to keep her respiratory & cardiovascular systems as calm as possible. She was never stung one time. She was 4 yrs younger but she had been taught what to do & she was successful. I learned somthg very vital that day for survival. Don't RUN & stay as still & calm as possible. To add, my furbaby Toto healed from his beestings & recovered completely.

I agree with you because I've tried it several times. When I was younger me and my friends went to destroy the bee hive which is about 10 meters away from our house, we threw rocks, sticks ,anything that we can throw at it, what's inside it came out flying around their nest while me and my friends ducked and staying still on our places, some are covering their head and some are picking up stone near them. Not a single bee stung us even though we're just like 2 meters away from the hive, and there's this kid who is farther away running probably playing caught some bees attention and got stung by one of them. And I feel bad for the kid who got stung.

I live out in the woods and have seen a giant hive. They didn't care I was there. Bees are relatively harmless and I've had them land on me and just sit there. They're our friends and without them we wouldn't have food. I would also like to point out most of the clipart on this video is of hornets or wasps, not bees....but if you are stung and are allergic seek medical attention immediately. But please also remember to respect these creatures as they are vital to human life.
