Quick bit on the Sandals, since they've come up a lot in the comments. We've walked thousands of miles in them over several years. A pair lasts 1000-1200 miles of walking. That's 9-12 months, for us. They're from a company called Luna. Easiest thing in our possession to recommend. Absolutely fantastic product.
Our calves and quadriceps were the specific part of our legs that got sore on this hike. Not our feet, ankles, hips, or knees. Zero blisters. Hiking in sandals is not for everyone, but it can be done with no adverse effects.

Just wondering if you carry a spare pair just in case they split or a strap breaks. Hiking sandals are an actual thing. Think how our predecessors ‘hiked’, marched an conquered throughout the ages.
I always wondered how your feet were handling it. Iveseen runners here in Thailand with special sandals they run in.

Being Auzzie I was always amazed at the places you wore them. Here they were a no no in the outback probably because of stones, spiders, snakes & ants & any other crawly biting thing. Did have a nickname, but probably incorrect these days. ******** riding boots. Don't know why, but was never told. Only place allowed was in camping ground showers. Lol
I wondered about the shoes too, being an Aussie there would be no way I would hike in those in Oz too many Variables 😂 I like them though as a shoe shoe...thanks for the link😊

The whole time I kept wondering if proper hiking shoes would have helped. I know you wear your sandles all the time and they are comfortable but others may have supported better and less pain. None the less you did it! Great job! 🎉 Really enjoyed watching this one. Also I have a bad back and think of Tia when she does this...after breaking mine I couldn't do it. We are all proud of you 2 and your efferts!

That last stopping point by the water fall was BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL. Thanks for the great photography. By the way, those mountain trails and foliage reminded me of some of the Melbourne Australia nature walks in the Dandenong Ranges.... but no where as steep and mystical... just the look of the trees and ferns.... so peaceful.

Very impressive hike guys and the scenery was awesome! All the extra effort you make and more so on this trek to place your camera and then record then retrieve etc doesn't go unnoticed. Huge effort and makes us feel we are with you. Japan is one of my favourite countries I've visited and having endured many hundreds of steps to get to shrines there I feel your pain...lol Again thank you for making the effort and to endure the pain for us . When you make it to Tasmania, you should do the wineglass bay walk (if it’s warm take bathers!) & also if you have time, either hike up mt Wellington from the track at the end of Lenah valley road, or do the overland track…. You’d love anyone of those!
Agree. I think they'd love the Overland Track, but in the summer only and properly prepared: enclosed footwear, carry warm and waterproof clothing, and an emergency beacon.
@@carokat1111 for sure - enclosed footwear is a must: in summer due to snakes & if you do the overland in winter (not advisable unless you’re hard core Tasmanian hiker) so you don’t freeze - & especially in case of snow! - For these guys, I would DEFINITELY advise Tassie between November & April 😉
I think that type of sandal originated from Japanese straw sandals. I was able to remember the hardships that people of the past had to go through while hiking the Kumano Kodo, and I was also able to think back on this. Thank you for your wonderful Vlogs. And Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing the adventure with all of us that sit at home, I exspecially appreciate your efforts to place a camera and walk away, then walk back to collect it, your distance travelled is far greater with all the backtracking, from the other comments I see your comfortable in your sandals, so why not ask them for support? This video alone shows that their sandals actually are ok to walk in. In my mind Japan was always a busy overcrowded place, this video clearly shows that not all of Japan is a city, so thank you for showing me the trail. I appreciate your efforts to create good content, personally I am more than happy to view a longer video spread out over longer days, maybe your aim to post every 3 days might need to be revisited, perhaps 3 videos a month of good quality might be a better aim, allowing you to soak in your adventures with less pressure on yourselves to be posting all the time. Love the adventure, love and light from Perth in Western Australia.

Great video guys. I can relate to the sore feet and legs. As others have commented, get yourselves some good comfortable support footwear, those sandals were 100% the reason for your pain.

Ive never wanted to intentionally cause myself suffering more than after watching this beauty. Like I want to go there, and i know the only kind of shape I am currently in is round. I may just actually start exercising based on wanting to do this trek. Well done.

I am a Japanese. I have been watching your youtube video since the episode of Vietnam. I was looking for some info about Sapa that we visited this summer and I saw your travel in Northern Vietnam. I didn't notice your mother was Japanese. This spring we hiked the short trail of Kumano Kodo. Good luck on your journey.
Great vid guys. Great experience for you too. In some of the forested area's I kept on expecting one of the little, bobble headed forest spirits from "Princess Mononoke " to appear from behind a tree. I also need to add that I couldn't have done that - not any more any way. 25 years ago, maybe. I don't believe that listening to what your bodies are telling you constitutes cheating. Taking that bus may have seemed like an error but it was totally the right thing to do. You've been given the opportunity to test your physical limits and you were wise to not push on that third day when you see what you had to do on the 4th. That could very well have left you out of action for weeks had you pushed on through. Hunger to succeed is one thing but knowing when to temper that hunger and not allow it rule you is wisdom.
50 miles, plus all the extras having to run back and get the camera between each take! Well done. As always, a spectacular video and so well put together. Thanks for taking us along.
I only recently discovered your channel. You've shot right into the top five of my favorite CZcams travelers. You guys have a great energy together that jumps right out off the screen. Relieved for you that the weather remained relatively pleasant and wasn’t hampered by rain or thunderstorms (as in Vietnam!)
It has always amazed me how you can walk/hike in flat sandles. A friend said to me "your feet are like an Acupuncturist's Nightmare", as I wore flat leather sandles, with good cushioning support the legs will be ok. I thought he was nuts until I walked in the Himalaya's then I knew what he meant. So now as a cycling tourist I have one pair for cycling and another for walking/hiking , especially in Japan. The cushioning effect reduces some of the pain but not all.

Stunning trees 🌲 so pretty 😍 my daughter spent 2 yrs in Japan after uni teaching English to Japanese students & now she has them here in Cairns as home stay students for a week or 2 at a time, beautiful people ❤ 40:10 that shot of the waterfall with that red temple is magnificent ❤congrats on finishing that really looked like hard work 😅

Looking at the terrain, it's no wonder your legs were sore. Seems to be a wise choice to take the bus for part of the way considering you were trying to squeeze a 6 day trip into 4!

Did the Kumano kodo in May……I met so many people and seasoned hikers who had to take shortcuts here and there, including myself. Y’all did really well.

Excellent video. That`s some walk with some great scenery. I know in a small way of your pain from walking. I am not long back from Japan. Where I did a lot of walking in heat and humidity. I did learn that if you place a rock or pebble on to of a torii gate it will bring you luck. Might struggle a bit with that big one though. I really liked the country side, every thing is so green. I hope to see more of you two in Japan.
You know what would make this more cool? Is if there was a monk at every few of the stamp stops or so who offers you tea and gives you a lesson. They give you stamps on the Camino Santiago too btw.

We did this in mid October and I'm feeling very nostalgic, I'm glad I found your video to be able to re-live some of it again. It's such a magical place.
I did 300km of the Camino de Santiago, and found it created such a deeper connection to the country for me, but man, my knees hurt so much after 10 days of walking up and down those mountains!

@13:04 I think you mean typhoon, the Kii peninsula was too far to be affected by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake+tsunami.
I know you would have been dead tired by the time you got to Nashi-no-taki but I hope you had just a little bit in reserve to walk down to the bottom of the falls, it's just spectacular down there and it would be such a shame to miss it

Well done you guys. We toured that area back in winter 2014. But in a car. 😀Climbed up a bit at the Yunomine Onsen trailhead and up the back of Nachi Taisha but that's about it. It snowed whilst we were there so it wasn't really conducive to hiking even if we were up for it. Have you any plans to visit Shikoku? Highly recommended but you will need a car there.

Wow I not know how you can hike in flip flops?? No support for a rolled ankle or cuts and scratches.. not to mention dangerous when wet! My opinion only.
I’m happy to hear that you will travel to Aotearoa my place of birth… you will have so much fun and good on ya for considering buying a vehicle. Easy to drive there and more to see between towns and villages.
On another note.. I get updates from NZ about travel warnings etc etc. if you’re around down south in this area going forward.
We've reviewed our advice for New Zealand and continue to advise exercise normal safety precautions. A 'boil water' notice is in place for the Queenstown and Frankton areas due to cryptosporidium found in the local drinking water

Well guys went back and think ive done the lot some twice. Did get a bit confusing there around Turkey and Australia, I knew my way round Auz, but may have missed some in Asia.

BTW not a Badger and not a raccoon. It’s a Tanuki, which is called a Raccoon Dog. It’s a canid that looks kind of like a raccoon and is all over Asia.
