I've reached to a point where caboosing would just appear on my mind randomly. I was washing my hair and then the name just struck in my mind suddenly. Then I noticed that it was a while a go since I watched philip videos. A moment later as I'm drying my hair this video appears in my youtube feed and greets me with caboosing. I'm not complaining, this is blursed.
He's trying to tell you that he likes card games, can you point to the weird part? I really don't get what part of this video is weird compared to other parts.
People seem to keep saying this in the replies, but Balatro is a completely different sort of game to slay the spire with a lot less balance and a lot less of the "tactical" part of a turn based tactics game which he's talking about here. Just because it has cards doesn't mean it will scratch the same itch.
Slay the Spire is one of those rare cases where that game is just so much more fun than it deserves to be. It's a silly little roguelite card game but it's horribly addicting, and once you start getting even just a little into it, you realize how much depth there really is. Easiest 9/10 I could ever give
I gotta say I always appreciate how you edit your music into the videos. A lot of creators and streamers always mix so little volume into the background music. You strike a really nice balance where the music is still listenable and engaging and I can clearly hear you. It adds something rather than it just being in there for the sake of having music and being barely audible.
*Meme of woman whispering in ear*: You have limited resources and you can't do all the right choices from the start *Image of kliksphilip arm shivering*
Not being funny, but if he's addicted to slay the spire I'm pretty sure he'll bounce off balatro quite quickly. Balatro is sort of like the candy crush of card games in comparison to slay the spire. The balancing of slay the spire is so fine tuned, and you make so many important decisions each turn (which seems to be what he really enjoys the game). Balatro is much more make a fun combo and watch the numbers go up. The skill ceiling is much lower, and you have a lot less piloting of your deck to do and a lot less meaningful decisions while doing it. I very much enjoyed Balatro, but a lot of people who really enjoy slay the spire bounced off it quick.
I discovered 3kliks because I'm a CS player, but honestly this channel has my favorite videos of yours. To hear you talk about other games in depth, or to tell a story through that medium like the Skyrim or total war videos is the most rewatchable and enjoyable for me. glad to see you return to that kind of content on here when you do.
1:56 You touch on something here that I've been thinking about a lot lately. I'm a big fan of simulation and strategy games like slay the spire, but I also quite like action games like dark souls and monster hunter. I do feel like turn based games are a bit ahead of the curve in terms of how they design their gameplay loops but I cant quite articulate what I mean yet. I think the ultimate appeal of souls combat is learning the boss moves and using that knowledge to overcome them, the actual means to how you do that are extremely simple. Monster hunter has an upgraded combat system, but the bosses generally have less varied movesets. Moment to moment in a game like slay the spire you have about as many options... attack, defend, buff, debuff, modify resources (healing etc) - but your deck evolves quickly over the course of a run into something very distinct from what you start with. I think action games have a huge amount of untapped potential in bringing longer gameplay loops into battles to really make fights feel distinct from eachother, monster hunter is a step above all other action games in this regard which is why I like it so much I think. Another interesting one is Risk of Rain 2, which takes the long loop of building a character over a run and mixes it with fast moment to moment gameplay. I do however feel like aside from items its missing those medium length resource buildup to big attack moments that monster hunter has with weapons like the chargeblade. Anyway, big nerdy wall of text, great video thanks again mr clicks.
I think I agree. It also might be that some of the 3D technology has actually regressed parallel to advancements in graphics and GUIs. Like NPC movement and navigation largely feel stagnant, where as they could be way more interesting, but gameplay programmers just don't have the tools to query various information about level geometry and construct interesting movement paths. Level design is harder than ever to do, because you have to have like 5 separate specialists work on a single level, and so some interesting quirks might be ironed out via 'design by committee'. Audio is separated into a separate department, and is mostly integrated into the gameplay in the most surface-level possible. And so on.
I recently got into Yu-Gi-Oh and its been quite a lot of fun. My best friend made me a Magician Girl deck and i really love playing with her. I dont really like a lot of card or tabletop games, but this one has been very enjoyable 💝
When Phil explains the thrill of discovering unique deck combinations in each playthrough that's exactly the reason why I was addicted to Binding of Isaac all those years ago.
As someone who's spent 300+ hours playing slay the spire, I am equally thrilled about the game as seeing any videos of it. It's almost disgustingly addictive when you get in to it

Oh i can relate. Big fan of strategy games of all kinds. Coming from playing Red Alert 3 at a friends, to playing Civilization 5, to giants like Europa Universalis 4, then Civ 6 since some of my friends got it for free... I just keep jumping between all of them. The only non-strategy game that even comes close to eating as much of my time is good old TF2....
When I was a kid my mom played solitaire, Tri-peaks, FreeCell and others and I thought it was the most boring thing ever. Then in my teens I asked her to teach me. Today I find myself having played more FreeCell than any other games in my life combined. It never gets old.
It might not just be card games - you may actually be a Roguelike enjoyer! Slay the Spire is one of the most finely crafted roguelikes ever made imo. I can also recommend Noita as another roguelike masterpiece (the game itself grows with your knowledge).
How you talk about the thrill of card games makes me think of Hunt: Showdown, which is an FPS. All the macro strategy and planning makes it so fun and makes you feel smart.
I feel this way with idle progress games. first it was cookie clicker and clicker heroes, now I play newer and newer idle games that let me feel like I am making loads of progress even tho truly that is only natural
Favorite clicker? I used to love putting on cookie clicker in the background while putting around on my pc. Made me feel productive even though I wasn’t 90% of the time.
Noita. It is a 2D rougelike. Each run does start with some skill. Dodging enemies, exploring the caves. But as the game goes on the only way to really progress is to create a wand so broken it can kill anything in seconds. The wand building system in that game is one of the most satisfying things I’ve experienced. It’s hard to get a hang of it at the beginning, but it’s worth sticking to it
so glad you have been enjoying slay the spire. i have hundreds of hours in it and you're absolutely correct--you may take breaks from the game but you'll always find a way back to it. try out the downfall mod if you're looking for new content too!

I think you might like Cube Chaos, it is so many units and perks that all combine together to create insanely fun interactions, losing is also incredibly fun when that long chain of insane 1/1000 interaction ends up getting you killed because the perk words itself in a specific way. The first few ascensions (the game calls them nightmares) are pretty easy, but it soon gets painfully tough and the decisions really matter
I was also taken by surprise when I learned that I loved card games. A few years ago, I was really enjoying Runeterra I played it all through out the beta and kept playing for a few months after, but then I took a month break from gaming in general, when I came back there was this massive expansion realese and there was so much to learn, the meta had completely changed, and there was this particular card that had like 5 different outcomes that I just couldn't be bothered to learn and stopped playing the game, the sad thing is I miss it but I know learning all over again is going to be a pain so I just play cs instead.
YESSS WE GOT HIM SLAY THAT SPIRE PHILIP HELL YEAH (if you ever get bored of it, there are THOUSANDS of superb mods that add different characters or floors or even rework all kinds of mechanics right on the steam workshop)
Roguelikes are a great mix of action (well, depending on the roguelike) to having to think about what each item will do together. Take The Binding of Isaac…and stuff explaining that but I am a bit tired so I will not even try. Rotwood is a amazing though, go play Rotwood.
The game inscryption would blow your mind. The experiences you described are my own, and this game was a recent mind explosion for me. I think you would suffer the same fate.
My first time playing Slay the Spire didn't make me think that it sucked, but rather, as someone who usually dislikes turn-based games, it was surprisingly immediately fun and easy to pick up.
Phillip, I am SO happy you finally made a video on Slay The Spire. I've always played first player shooters, and never expected myself to play anything like this game. Flash forward to me now, having logged over 500 hours, and having reached the worldwide top 50 for winstreaks on the Watcher. I can say this game WILL dominate you because it really IS that good. Seeing my favourite youtuber of all time make a video on my favourite game fills me with joy. Btw Watcher is best character (wrath and divinity are outright broken)
I used to play a lot of turn based games simply because my PC was bad and anything real-time was a struggle due to the performance. Went in kind of the opposite direction there.
I feel like this about baldurs gate 3 recently. I never really got into strategy games properly I'd play them but always felt like hmm it's missing something to really hook me in and Baldurs gate 3 hooked me and wouldnt let go. Such a refreshing game for me after years of playing all the newest and great fps games that came before it
So by the great science my uncle Newton left me which he named calculus, cards are gay. Now i understand that even tho there were cards in his pockets, my uncle was indeed happy to see me.
It could also be that some shooters are a bit over-engineered and over-designed. I like to fire up Doom (1993) from time to time, and I wasn't even born when it came out. In newer games there is sometimes a degree of awkwardness to them, like the movement being a bit floaty, or even if it's alright -- you sometimes get stuck on miniscule geometry for a moment. Enemies still use the 'stun frames', but they are such bullet sponges that it just looks wrong. Sometimes a shooter would have such NPC behavior/navigation that they just run straight at you to attack, not really utilizing the environment in any interesting way. Sometimes it feels like games are bigger in numbers, but smaller in depth. More polygons, more pixels, more weapons, bigger worlds, but less attention to snappy physics, refined movement, actually fun NPCs with a sense of playfulness to them. It might be all subjective, and don't even want to take the time to quantify it, because it would involve playing (more of) games I don't enjoy. But maybe somebody has similar thoughts, or had similar feelings but didn't realize it. If you feel like you aren't having fun in games lately, maybe try (depending on your preferences) original shareware version of Doom (via DOSBox), Minecraft Beta 1.7.3, 0 A.D., Arma: Cold War Assault, Tyrian 2000, OpenTTD, Ultrakill. I would personally play any of those over pretty much any new big game (original binaries of Doom have compaign coop that still works, networked, not splitscreen). It feels like people largely don't notice those things, and it gets chalked up to nostalgia or something. I don't know, maybe you indeed wouldn't see the difference. But I think that I do.
