'The Fall' is a setting of lines from Dante Alighieri's "Divine Comedy", including one of the most epic closing lines in the history of literature: 'thence we came forth to rebehold the stars'. And to celebrate, we collaborated with animator Sharon Liu to make this haunting new animated music video! The piece is sung by ModernMedieval, Pene Pati, and the Royal Opera Chorus (conducted by William Spaulding) and played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (conducted by me).
You'll also hear that the 'Sogno di Volare' theme makes a brief appearance at the end! That's because that melody, which many of you know as the theme to "Civilization VI", is used as a recurring motif throughout the album. It returns after our darkest moments of failure to summon us back to out feet, and to keep pressing forward in our quest to conquer the heavens. The Fall was commissioned by David Byard in celebration of human enlightenment

ITALIAN:
O gente umana, per volar sù nata,
perché a poco vento così cadi?
“E però leva sù; vinci l’ambascia
con l’animo che vince ogne battaglia,
se col suo grave corpo non s’accascia.
Più lunga scala convien che si saglia;
ENGLISH:
O human race, born to fly upward,
wherefore at a little wind dost thou so fall?
“And therefore raise thee up, o'ercome the anguish
With spirit that o'ercometh every battle,
If with its heavy body it sink not.
A longer stairway it behooves thee mount;
'Tis not enough from these to have departed;
Let it avail thee, if thou understand me."
(Once you have taken flight,
You'll decide
Gaze towards the sky, you'll know that
That is where your heart will feel at home.)
We mounted up, he first and I the second,
Till I beheld through a round aperture
Some of the beauteous things that Heaven doth bear;
Thence we came forth to rebehold the stars.

For not-italian speakers: when the choir sings “Sogno di volare”, tenor sings “salimmo su, el primo e io secondo,/ tanto ch’ i’ vidi delle cose belle/ che porta ‘l ciel, per un pertugio tondo./E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle”. Those are the last verses in Dante’s Inferno, which can be roughly translated in “we climbed up, he first, me second, till we saw via a round opening the beautiful things the sky carries. And in the end we could see again the stars”.
Have read that work by CS Lewis.
Thank you for translating this for us.
@@karenculpepper973 Which CS Lewis book is that?
Benjamin Walker I am so sorry, I was just listening to a CS Lewis audiobook right before I started going through my CZcams notices.
I really meant to say...Dante Alighieri.
He wrote Inferno (Dante’s Inferno is how most say it because of the character Dante) There were 3 books or poems really , Purgatorio, then Paradiso.
“Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light;
I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.”
When Sogno Di Volare kicked in my heart skipped a beat. For it longed for the skies it never touched. The stars is never reached. The birds it failed to imitate.

Thank you for providing the lyrics.
I just love that the Inferno's last verse interleaves seamlessly with Sogno di Volare
" Tis not enough from these to have departed"
ok wtf does this mean
not enough from what to have departed? or not enough FOR who to have departed? has anyone really been far enough as departed to use even go want to do look more like?
I could not help but sing those Sogno di Volare lyrics as I read them.
OK so I tried to transcribe the lyrics so that it's sung in order. However, I don't have access to sheet music and my Italian opera listening is pretty rusty...

3:47 my jaw literally dropped and I cried real tears. That’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard.
Same
3:17 to the end is absolutely divine -- all of the troubles of this world are melted into mellifluous honey, flowing like golden sun and smoothing over the broken, burnt, and beaten earth. Love and peace to all! Thank you for bringing the people of this world closer together, Mr. Tin!!
❤️🕊️
Oh hell yeah. "To Shiver The Sky" is going to be killer, and this song just makes the wait that much harder!!💖
I'm crying. That 3:46 mark always makes me feel a lot of emotions.
Did you hear this one then? czcams.com/video/WQYN2P3E06s/video.html
Even after spiraling into oblivion, in our darkest moments, the human spirit calls us to crawl out and wonder at the splendor of our universe.
Chills. falling to the bottom to climb back up to the stars. yes humanity. you always get up and climb higher than ever before. i never thought starting the journey to conquer the sky would start this low but then again the only way from here is up. can't wait for the rest of the album.
I'm glad to see that this album still has your familiar orchestrational "glue." It is at once familiar and alien.
As someone born in the digital era, I think I might just buy my first album ever.
As here in Italy we adore Dante's Divina Commedia and consider it as a transition from the medieval /sack and pillage times to the reinassance and knoledge age...this is a real marvel to my ears, especially the ending part. Thank you for your incredible work, again, Mr. Tin!
My first and likely only CZcams comment - I think this piece is a work of genius. Even non-classical listeners I know are enamored by it!
Thanks man!
I am, yet again, blown away by how deeply this music touches my very soul. You are without a doubt a light in the darkness sir. You give life to the dreams that live inside all of us. The desire to be more than we are currently, to overcome the trials we face, and to persevere. If we all only had a mere fraction of the vision that artists like you have, this world would be truly changed for the better. I am waiting....albeit impatiently....to hear this album in its entirety. Knowing full well that I will undoubtedly spend the bulk of the time weeping, aching for humanity to awaken to the potential that lies in our desire to rise above and reach towards the stars.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for helping to keep the dream of our potential alive.
Ooh I def get a “Sirens” vibe from that, good stuff!
I was kinda expecting a Balrog of Morgoth at the bottom of the pit lol 😉
Can't wait to listen to the whole album!
Love the angelic high notes and the deeper tones at the start. Like the ground is calling, but the stars are pulling him back. Yet another stunning composition by christopher tin. I'm so excited for the album 😁
As a lover of Dante's Divine Comedy, I can only appreciate this soothing and inspiring masterpiece. Thank you from my heart!
I like how you remind us through your art how extraordinary it is we are capable of flight in the first place. How much work from engineers and scientists has been needed. How much imagination and dreaming. And that we did not stop at cross-continental flying, but advanced even further to become the first mammalian species on earth to reach space. And people are still dreaming. Some of Mars, others of planets beyond. We need art, we need imagination. Engineers and scientists make it possible, but art is what tells us what it is we want and need to make possible. Thanks Christopher for the brilliant message.
This is such a beautiful piece. When Sogno Di Volare kicked in I could just feel the "sadness" leaving my body from the first part. Another masterpiece.
The cruelty of the uncaring universe when it meets indomitable human spirit
I'm not sure how or why, but I do believe there are ninjas cutting onions in my room of all places. *sniffs and wipes away a tear*
This Song is a perfect representasion of my mental state the last 8 years. Love it, amazing!
Seriously a masterpiece!
Albums title is accurate. This created so many shivers across my body while listening
Can't wait for the full album. I swear Christopher Tin is going to inspire me to go to Mars.
Holy lord.......I cannot wait for this album!! I'm already crying!! (I can't imagine how I would have been listening to this live in Washington back in May *fingers crossed still*)
I started crying when sogno di volare started and now i can't stop, jUST A MASTERPIECE MR TIN.
Mr. Tin, thank you so much for this album! I can't wait to listen to the score when it comes out! Meeting you in New York last year was a dream; I fall short of the words to tell you how your music has-singularly, or perhaps in conjunction with that of John Williams-truly inspired me not just to be a composer but to view art as something that is unobtainable. It defies definition by its very nature, and I hear it in both your music and in Williams. Certainly, I understand the pieces which influenced Calling All Dawns and its history as a trailer music album, but I nonetheless find those moments in the score and enjoy it tremendously. Forgive the less-than organized nature of this comment, but it is so rare that I am deeply affected by music in this way. You remind me that there is hope to change the world and a purpose of doing good in writing music. I truly admire you, and thank you for this very beautiful music. -- Sam from Twitter
There is something elusive and unknowable about the way this is written and organized. The connections are beautiful. I hope that one day I can be involved in the creation of art as beautiful as this.
Just when you need to get focused... Lovely.
It's hard to impart how truly magnanimous this makes me feel.
This would be really cool with the two sopranos positioned antiphonally.
It's because of a masterpiece like this that i admire music. The power to generate different kind of feeling by sound. Brave.
I've never seen so much Evil in my 31 years of being alive. Times right now are difficult to live through. My God be with us and help rid the world of Evil. Amen
This was awesome! I can't wait for the album! I love the shepard's tone effect you put in there!
Thanks for catching that!
I was thinking the same thing, Such a great audio illusion.
No estoy llorando, solo se me metió un poco de epicidad en el ojo.
So glad to have the CD and the booklet along with it. Before I realized I had that, I was so caught up in the music to 2:25 that I didn't even notice it had lyrics!
If you want to sing along, here's how the first half is spaced out. The rest is in the description (thank you Christopher!) and easy to follow.

Chills.
I just recently discovered your music, and it is absolutely phenomenal!
Honestly, one of the best pieces I've ever heard.
Gorgeous!
Beautiful.
Oh my heart can't handle this! So BEAUTIFUL.
brilliant, this is what we call a musician
OMG... This is just celestial! Christopher I am absolutely DYING to hear the rest of your album!
This album will make everything shiver. Just cant wait.
The harmonies invoke so many emotions, as well as the visualizer.
Omg the chills. I have goosebumps. I’m so glad I preordered this album!
amazing visualization...
Thank you, Christopher Tin! 💜💜💜
Well this brought me to tears .
Yeah the “Una Volta Che avrai” at 3:47 is amazing, but why is no one talking about the.... “Tanto chi’i vidi de la cose belle
Che porta ‘l ciel, per un pertugio tondo” at 4:05 ? .... like, did y’all hear that or am I making it up? The phrasing of that passage is something else (out of this world) my mind is blown.
It is indeed! Tender and majestic before exploding onto a vista of glory.
Thank the great poet Dante Alighieri for that, those words come from his divine comedy.
I clicked bcs of the thumbnail - and I wasn't disappointed.
That was something special. I am beyond excited for the rest of the album! It's going to be an experience.
Goosebumps!
this is overwhelmingly beautiful !
Beautiful visualization with a message.
I'm waiting for a new album.
The end legit made me cry
Oh the goosebumps!
Love it 😊
Dang, I got chills 😳
This is beautiful!!
Super chills! I imagine this for a soundtrack of a Diablo game where angel Tyrael fell from heaven to become human.
Magnifique, je pense que je vais pleurer en écoutant l'album, merci ! 👏👏👏
Genius.
Amazing 💜
BRAVO BRAVOOOOOOOOO
Need respect for the Maestro. From S.Korea 🇰🇷

Yes! Scores will be made available in the coming months!
Magnificent!
As always your music is soundtrack to human condition. As civilisation and as individuals.
Thank you!
Is this going to be on the new album? Can’t wait for it!
Yup!
This chilled me to the bone when listening. Unbelievable composition!
Awesome track!
You're a genius, your music lit up my world this week, thanks for your creations
I find it an incredibly inspiring composition. I listened to him with the curly skin of the emotion that caused me. Once again Christopher Tin does it again ... Congratulations !!! (There is less left for the album's release ...)
Bravo.
When you touch the sky, You must fall for another uprising
WoW.
What a good birthday present, haha. Thanks for the piece.
Happy birthday!
Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday!
Sr. Tim que maravilla despertar con su música,en mi país estamos en Invierno y todavía encerrados en Cuarentena.
Pero con esperanza, solamente agradecerle x este amanecer que usted da.
Saludos cordiales.
Oh... Common maestro tim , this wasn't expected, brilliant!
I love this so much
Title is not clickbait 100% Genuine Fall Man
♡♡♡ it's beautiful, the music and the video ♡♡♡
Well, that was something!
Yea so I don't understand a word of this, but it totally sums up the past ten years for me. To shiver my skin.
No idea what the lyrics are saying. But the shear emotional force of this piece is utterly moving. Such an epic build up. Hitched my breath and misty eyes.
That climax Tho.
this music would perfectly suit the essence of the film "Perfume: Story of a Murderer"
I enjoyed that movie!
Awesome man. Like a beautiful nightmare
Hey, thanks dude!
And in fact it sounds very much like a direct answer to parts of Drop.
Мое почтение!
Это то что сейчас нужно!!!!
When the song has not even 1000 views and you're already addicted to it
the song feels like someone pushes fallen angel to hell and... ... dies but with loneliness but he didn't die he became god of night
Indeed the dream of flight.
Magnificien piece, I love the crescendo and how it convays emotion, I'm looking forward for the full album
I'm sorry to say this but the tenor should revisit his Italian pronounce for "uscimmo", the correct one is, to put it in an english way, "ushimmo" where the "-sci-" sounds like "-shi-" in Shiver, and not as "-chi-" in "children", to be fair all the other words were pronounced in an excelent italian
This pairs perfectly with Daedalus and Icarus. Thank you, Mr. Tin.
"The Fall" Just in time for Halloween!
The ending is a Dante Alighieri's quote
